Sleep Apnea Linked to Raised Stroke Risk in Women, Too

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

TUESDAY, May 20, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The link between sleep apnea and stroke appears to be as strong in women as in men, a new study says. Because men tend to develop obstructive sleep apnea before women, previous studies may have underestimated the connection between sleep apnea and stroke in women, according to the study's authors. "Our results could have a substantial impact on our thinking of the risks associated with sleep apnea in women," the study's lead author, Dr. Suzie Bertisch, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, said in a news release from the American Thoracic Society. "From a clinical standpoint, the results could help clinicians provide more proactive treatment for reducing cardiovascular risk in their female [sleep apnea] patients," she added. Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder that causes shallow breathing or repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, according to the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The pauses can last a few seconds or minutes. Common signs of sleep apnea include snoring, choking or gasping sounds, morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness. For the current study, researchers examined data from more than 5,400 people who took part in a long-term study of … Continue reading

Published: Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 8:51 p.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 8:51 p.m. The illness, which surfaced in his early 40s, had forced him to leave his job as a telephone lineman. He was increasingly unable to hunt, fish or work in the multiacre yard outside his home north of Lakeland. He was desperate for additional treatment in 2002, the year the Food and Drug Administration approved deep-brain stimulation for advanced Parkinson's. Kendrick had surgery in July 2004 at Tampa General Hospital to install the system needed for the electrical treatment. "If it weren't for deep-brain stimulation therapy, Roland would not be moving around today," said Joyce Kendrick, his wife of 15 years. That treatment is now standard now for advanced Parkinson's, a disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. "Patients have improvement for long periods of time," said Dr. Theresa A. Zesiewicz, neurologist and director of The Frances J. Zesiewicz Center and Foundation for Parkinson's Disease at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Close to 100,000 people have gotten deep-brain stimulation by now. Hundreds of her patients have, Zesiewicz said. There were far fewer when Kendrick got it in 2004, although it was … Continue reading

Etobicoke Guardian Gabriella Gabbie Tom is sitting on the floor of her family room playing with Puppy, her brown stuffed dog with the green polka dotted chapeau. Dont sit in a W, Gabbie. Remember how to sit with your legs crossed, her mom, Angel Chu-Tom gently reminded her only child. Nearly four, Gabbie is a going concern. She crawls around the floor at lightning speed and chats up a storm. One day, Im going to be a ballerina! Gabbie exclaimed. Today, no one would guess Gabbie was born prematurely at 28 weeks weighing just two pounds. Once stabilized, the preemie was immediately placed into an incubator and rushed by a neonatal medical team to The Hospital for Sick Children in downtown Toronto. Premature babies sometimes forget to breathe. Each time little Gabbie stopped breathing during her two-month SickKids stay, a bedside alarm sounded and a NICU nurse would rush in to stimulate her to breathe again. Gabbies SickKids neonatologist Dr. Linh Ly, medical director of SickKids Neonatal Follow-up Clinic, enrolled Gabbie in a MRI research study of pre-term infants out of concern her repeated stopped breathing may have caused some brain injury. Gabbie had two MRIs: one at birth, another … Continue reading

Family hopes reverse stroke treatment will help their Joel

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

Topics: disability, reverse stroke, toowoomba, united states AN INJECTION that could repair brain damage suffered 23 years ago sounded at first to be a bit like magic dust to Toowoomba mum Coralie Graham. But intense investigation and a substantial financial commitment have her convinced there is a good chance a procedure popularly known as a reverse stroke will remove the fog shrouding her son Joel Shepherd's mind. Mr Shepherd was three-and-a-half years old when complications arising from gastroenteritis caused fluid to put pressure on his brain. He was extremely fortunate to survive, but did not escape brain damage that has left him in need of 24-hour care. His mother, who has worked as a nurse as well as a psychologist, was fascinated to see a 60 minutes report in which a stroke victim in the United States had her symptoms reversed by a procedure known as perispinal etanercept. It involved injecting the drug etanercept, used in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, into a large blood vessel at the base of the patient's neck. "I know that Joel kind of lives in this fog," Ms Graham said. "Sometimes you will see him out of the fog and you will see just glimpses … Continue reading
