Chemistry equals wins for Bobcats

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2014

HALLSVILLE The Hallsville Bobcats are four rounds deep in the playoffs and if you were to ask different players what the key to their success has been so far this year, youd likely hear about their team chemistry. Macailyn Wilder, Lance Lassen and Jacob Walker are the three outfielders and they say chemistry is something you can never overlook. Wilder, a senior left fielder, said thats definitely the difference between this year and last year. I think we just all get along better, he said. We sometimes fight and argue, but it makes us stronger and a better team bond. Walker, a junior center fielder agrees and said, We all have each others backs. I think its not just a matter of winning but all of us growing up together that helps develop chemistry. A lot of us have known each other for a long time. Head coach Scott Mitchell says his teams chemistry is unique. Chemistry is something that not every team has, he said. Its something that is special for each group. These guys love being around each other. According to senior right fielder Lassen, that chemistry extends far beyond what happens on the field. We just help … Continue reading

Superheavy chemistry, one atom at a time

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2014

5 hours ago (Left to right) Ken Gregorich, Jackie Gates, Heino Nitsche It's now more or less official: element 117 will have a seat at the periodic table. Earlier this month an international team of scientists that included researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Nuclear Science Division found two atoms of superheavy element 117. The experiment, conducted at a particle accelerator at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany, builds on the previous 117 experiment by a different team working in Dubna, Russia in 2010 that identified six atoms of the superheavy element. Heino Nitsche leads Berkeley Lab's superheavy-element research. The group is involved in not only in the verification of new elements like 117, but also in figuring out the best ways to do chemistry experiments with the few, fleeting atoms on the roster of superheavies. He and staff scientists Kenneth Gregorich and Jackie Gates recently discussed their roles in the new 117 experiment. They also described how their team, which includes scientist Greg Pang, does chemistry one atom at a time. First of all, why do superheavy elements matter? Heino Nitsche: The question is why elements matter, period. It's because they are part of … Continue reading

Dr. Todd Malan Named Chief Cell Therapy Officer at Okyanos Heart Institute

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2014

Freeport, The Bahamas (PRWEB) May 20, 2014 Okyanos Heart Institute has announced the addition of Dr. Todd Malan to their executive medical team as Chief Cell Therapy Officer and General Surgeon. He will perform and oversee the liposuction step of Okyanos treatment, removing a small amount of fat from patients from which their own stem cells are isolated. Cardiac cell therapy is intended for no-option heart patients who have exhausted the currently available standards of care for their condition, of which there are about 2 million in the United States alone. Dr. Malan is founder of the Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, specializing in advanced liposuction and fat transfer procedures. A pioneer in adipose- (fat) derived stem cell research and fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Malan became the first physician in the United States to utilize adult stem cells from fat tissue for soft tissue reconstruction. He has co-authored two medical textbooks on fat-derived stem cell therapies and has served as principal investigator on two Institutional Review Board- (IRB) approved adult stem cell trials. As an active member of the adipose stem cell research community, Dr. Malan is very familiar with the therapeutic benefits … Continue reading

Researchers Test Whether Red Queen Hypothesis Makes Species Resilient

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise In Lewis Carrolls 1871 classic novel Through the Looking Glass, the Red Queen tells Alice: Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. Over the years, evolutionary biologists have used the Red Queens statement to refer to the Red Queen hypothesis, which describes how living organisms, including humans, manage to survive in a changing environment by adapting through sexual reproduction. According to a University of Iowa researcher, the hypothesis is supported. In a paper published in the journal Biology Letters, lead author Deanna Soper, postdoctoral researcher in the UI Department of Biology and currently visiting assistant professor at Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin, and her colleagues write about testing a version of the Red Queen hypothesis. In particular, they addressed whether a particular prediction of the hypothesis was metthat exposure to parasites increases multiple mating in New Zealand freshwater snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum). What they found was that a challenge to the health of the snails caused the snails to respond by increasing their rate of mating and their number of mates. "Under the Red Queen hypothesis, sexual reproduction gives an advantage over asexual … Continue reading
