New treatment option available for Parkinson's Disease

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

A neurosurgeon from Des Moines spoke to a local support group Tuesday about a non-medical treatment option for Parkinson's Disease. Esmiralda Henderson, of Mercy Medical Center, spoke to about a dozen people in the Parkinson's Support Group at the Marshalltown Public Library about deep brain stimulation. Henderson, the only deep brain stimulation fellowship trained in central Iowa, told the group the two stage surgery first starts with a thin electrode being implanted in a specific region of the brain using precise equipment. The patient is generally kept awake for portions of the procedure in order to provide important information and feedback regarding the lead placement, Henderson said. During second procedure the patient would be put to sleep to have the neurostimulator implanted under the patient's collar bone or in the abdominal area. The neurostimulator is essentially a brain pacemaker, Henderson said. "It treats symptoms of Parkinson's Disease just like medications would," Henderson said. Grey's Anatomy Recap: "Fear (of the Unknown)"

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

The Fab Five has become the Tenacious Two. Grey's Anatomy bid a fond and emotional farewell to Sandra Oh during Thursday's season finale as Cristina Yang set off for Zurich to become the hotshot cardiothoracic surgeon she was always meant to be. But it wouldn't be a true Grey's finale without at least one twist before the end. In this case, it initially seemed like Cristina might have been inside the local mall hit by an explosion, which was first deemed a possible terrorist attack but actually turned out to be a gas main that blew up. Fortunately, Cristina survived her tenure at Grey Sloan Memorial, an impressive feat for a doctor who suffered through an ectopic pregnancy, a hospital shooter, floods and more! But it's also a good thing that she didn't go to the mall after all because she can now lend a hand to the overwhelmed doctors of GSM who are dealing with the victims of the explosion. Her final day serves as a walk down memory lane as she attempts to get some closure from the hospital. But Cristina isn't alone when she leaves. When Shane realizes that his teacher is exiting, he begs to come … Continue reading

Visual clue to new Parkinson's Disease therapies

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 15-May-2014 Contact: David Garner david.garner@york.ac.uk 44-019-043-22153 University of York A biologist and a psychologist at the University of York have joined forces with a drug discovery group at Lundbeck in Denmark to develop a potential route to new therapies for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Dr Chris Elliott, of the Department of Biology, and Dr Alex Wade, of the Department of Psychology, have devised a technique that could both provide an early warning of the disease and result in therapies to mitigate its symptoms. In research reported in Human Molecular Genetics, they created a more sensitive test which detected neurological changes before degeneration of the nervous system became apparent. In laboratory tests using fruit flies, the researchers discovered that a human genetic mutation that causes Parkinson's amplified visual signals in young flies dramatically. This resulted in loss of vision in later life. Working with researchers from the Danish pharmaceutical company, H.Lundbeck A/S, they tested a new drug that targets the Parkinson's mutation in flies. This drug prevented the abnormal changes in the flies' visual function. It is the first time that the compound has been used in vivo and its effectiveness was analysed using the new, … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy says goodbye to Dr. Cristina Yang

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

Warning: This article contains spoilers Cristina Yang finally left Seattle for Switzerland but not before some trademark Greys Anatomy operating-room chaos and one final Cristina/Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) dance-off. Thursday nights season finale of ABCs veteran drama sprinkled in a few surprises throughout its hour, leading up to the departure of Dr. Yang, played by original series star Sandra Oh (Dr. Yang), departing Greys after 10 long seasons. And, naturally, Yangs last day on the job was total chaos. A gas-main explosion at a Seattle mall sent dozens of survivors to Seattle Grace with horrific injuries, including blisters caused by dry-cleaning chemicals. Since this is Greys Anatomy where season-finale chaos reigns supreme Yang frantically operated on the injured and almost performed a pediatric heart transplant. Right. She also returned to Seattle Grace a final time to dance it out with Meredith (apparently a thing between them). Cristina had some words of advice for Meredith Dont be a hero. I need you alive. You make me brave before bidding a low-key goodbye to her Seattle Grace colleagues (and taking Shane, played by Gaius Charles, with her to Switzerland in a surprising twist). Cue the whiny acoustic soundtrack. Meanwhile, Webber (James Pickens) discovers … Continue reading
