Nun attacked may have irreversible brain damage

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

SEREMBAN, Malaysia - Sister Julianna Lim may have irreversible brain injury after being attacked with a helmet in the compound of a church here early on Wednesday. The 69-year-old from the Holy Infant Jesus order based in Kampung Pasir has several blood clots in the head after being repeatedly struck with the helmet at the Church of Visitation here. Members of the Roman Catholic order "specialise" in helping the poor and homeless and is famous worldwide for reaching out to the marginalised, making sure they get opportunities to make a better life for themselves. Church member P. Mary Josephine, 65, said doctors had conveyed this to church officials as Lim's condition had not improved since she was wheeled after the attack. "Her pressure was extremely high when she was brought in but has since dropped. Doctors are trying their best to stabilise her but there are no signs of recovery yet," she said. Several church members have been praying by Lim's bedside at the hospital since she was brought in for treatment. Josephine said Lim suffered severe internal head injuries and bleeding. "It is a painful time for the family, relatives as well as church members. We are praying that … Continue reading

Crucial decisions often taken with poor guidance for those with limited mental capacity

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

People who have limited mental capacity need better help with making decisions according to a clinical psychologist at Lancaster University. Dr Stephen Weatherhead says the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act by health and social care professionals is often inadequate. Research he supervised, conducted by Irram Waji is published in the journal Social Care and Neurodisability. The research found gaps in training and misunderstandings in the implementation of the complexities of the Act. Stephen said: "With an aging population and more people surviving serious injury, this Act will affect nearly everyone at some point. Whether from Alzheimer's, autism or brain injury, people can lack the mental capacity to decide things like where to live or whether to have hospital treatment." He said that professionals often veered between being too empowering or too restrictive when helping with decisions. "For example, when a lady with Alzheimer's says she wants to leave everything to her two grandchildren when she actually has four grandchildren, what do you do ? This lady had forgotten about the other two so someone needs to help her make that decision." He said specialist training is needed to ensure that professionals understand the subtle provisions of the Act. "We … Continue reading

ABC 'Grey's Anatomy': Sandra Oh bids an emotional farewell to Cristina Yang May 15, 2014, 2:35 PM EST Less than three months away from leaving "Grey's Anatomy" for good, Sandra Oh is feeling quite punchy on the set of the ABC medical drama. "I don't listen to you anymore," she playfully tells a crew member who comes to collect her from the ambulance bay to start shooting a scene. "Yes, I'm acting out! Can you tell?" A lot of fans have felt the same way ever since it was announced that Oh would leave the hallowed halls of Grey Sloan Memorial last summer. Video: 'Grey's Anatomy' season finale sneak peek It's natural to feel a sense of loss when any TV character exits a series, but Cristina Yang isn't your garden variety character. Cold, cocky and complex, the highly intelligent Yang has always been stubborn and highly competitive so much so that there was even a brief moment where Yang and her twisted sister Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) were enemies before they cemented one of the most influential friendships in television history. But Oh also brought heart and humanity to the role that earned her Golden Globe and SAG awards, as … Continue reading

Hurricane's wife calls for better drugs in MS treatment

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

Published: 5:57AM Friday May 16, 2014 Source: Fairfax Source: ONE News The wife of Hurricanes midfielder Tim Bateman has pleaded for Pharmac funding of better multiple sclerosis drugs after the family were forced to shift to Japan to seek treatment for her. Laura Bateman was diagnosed with the neurological disease last year and, after a tough few months, the couple and young daughters Shyla and Mylie decided to make the move to access treatment not available in New Zealand. "I'd love to see a time in the near future where the best possible drugs become available right from the moment of diagnosis, not months of waiting for a certain threshold of deterioration to be met," she said. The Batemans' plight has renewed the Multiple Sclerosis Society's call for drug-funding agency Pharmac to push through approval for superior drugs used overseas. In Australia, the United States and Canada, drugs were prescribed at the first diagnosis, but in New Zealand signs of disability had to be shown before a drug such as beta-interferon was prescribed, MS Society committee member Neil Woodhams said. Two forms of beta-interferon and another drug are funded by Pharmac for MS patients after a neurological assessment. Overseas, a … Continue reading

Washington reveals that he sat down and talked with Oh about what life will be like after leaving Grey's, explaining to her that "It will take about five years to find herself after these 10." And then? "Hopefully when she is done with her break, we can collaborate again." 17 Times We Fell in Love With Sandra Oh on Grey's Anatomy Washington returned to Grey's a few weeks ago to offer Sandra's character Cristina Yang her dream job, in Zurich, giving her the keys to his insanely high-tech cardiology research castle. Or as Washington himself puts it, "He Willy Wonka'd it." Genetic tracking identifies cancer stem cells in human patients

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

The gene mutations driving cancer have been tracked for the first time in patients back to a distinct set of cells at the root of cancer -- cancer stem cells. The international research team, led by scientists at the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, studied a group of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes -- a malignant blood condition which frequently develops into acute myeloid leukaemia. The researchers say their findings, reported in the journal Cancer Cell, offer conclusive evidence for the existence of cancer stem cells. The concept of cancer stem cells has been a compelling but controversial idea for many years. It suggests that at the root of any cancer there is a small subset of cancer cells that are solely responsible for driving the growth and evolution of a patient's cancer. These cancer stem cells replenish themselves and produce the other types of cancer cells, as normal stem cells produce other normal tissues. The concept is important, because it suggests that only by developing treatments that get rid of the cancer stem cells will you be able to eradicate the cancer. Likewise, if you could selectively eliminate these cancer stem cells, the other remaining cancer … Continue reading

STEMCELL Technologies Inc. Launches Novel Cell Culture …

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2014

Vancouver, British Columbia (PRWEB) May 12, 2014 STEMCELL Technologies Inc. has just released NEW MesenCult Proliferation Kit with MesenPure (Mouse), a novel cell culture medium to advance research on mouse mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells (MSCs). When added to MesenCult medium, MesenPure supplement enriches mouse bone marrow- or compact bone-derived MSC cultures by reducing the number of hematopoietic cells. Culturing with MesenPure eliminates the time-intensive serial passaging steps and frequent cell culture medium changes normally required to decrease the unwanted hematopoietic cell population typically present in MSC cultures. Cultures treated with MesenPure appear homogeneous and mostly devoid of hematopoietic cells as early as passage zero and also contain increased numbers of mesenchymal stem cells that display more robust differentiation. This easy-to-use and versatile kit, may save researchers from having to wait several weeks for homogeneous MSC cultures, explains Dr. Arthur Sampaio, Senior Scientist at STEMCELL Technologies. But, I think the greatest advantage to using MesenPure may be the ability to use lower-passage cultures. It has been shown that over time, extended passaging can bring about detrimental changes to MSCs, such as a loss of phenotype, senescence, and a decrease in the homing ability and differentiation potential of the cells.
