A Blenheim woman who smoked synthetic cannabis to help her cope with multiple sclerosis is looking for an alternative treatment now that legal highs have been banned. Paula Davis, 37, of Mayfield, said she was angry the government had banned all psychoactive substances, formerly known as legal highs, on Thursday last week. She started using synthetic cannabis as a legal alternative to cannabis to help her sleep and eat after being diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2006. The autoimmune disease causes overwhelming fatigue, numbness, and affects balance. Davis said before she started smoking synthetic cannabis in October last year, she injected herself with medication to reduce the progression of the disease. She stopped sleeping and her weight dropped to 40 kilograms after the trigger in her brain to tell her she was hungry stopped working. By smoking synthetic cannabis, she could eat and sleep, she said. About 10 days ago she stopped smoking two types of synthetic cannabis she used regularly. Drug treatment bill has Senate's green light

BOSTON The Senate on Tuesday unanimously adopted a bill to require insurers to cover drug and alcohol treatment without prior approval for admissions, a move expected to greatly increase access to treatment and that state Sen. Stephen M. Brewer predicted "will make a quantum leap forward" in treating opiate addiction. The legislation, which now goes to the House for consideration, would prohibit MassHealth, the state's Medicaid program, as well as commercial health insurance companies from requiring prior approval for admission to clinical detox and other in-patient and out-patient drug addiction and substance abuse treatment programs. The bill also requires that those services be covered by health insurance companies and sets up a system to certify professionals to qualify for providing treatment that is reimbursable by insurers. Backers of the bill said the program will result in as many as 1,000 licensed workers to provide reimbursable drug-addiction treatment. While no estimates of the state health insurance costs or premiums charged by commercial insurance companies was offered during the floor debate, Mr. Brewer, D-Barre, said he is convinced the expense will be less than not addressing a rising epidemic of opioid addictions. Chelsea Manning might be moved to civilian prison

JEDDAH The Associated Press on Wednesday reported that defense officials were trying to transfer Chelsea Manning, who seeks to live as a woman, to a civilian prison to facilitate that treatment. Defense officials said that one option under consideration was transferring Manning to a civilian prison. Manning is serving her sentence in all-male detention facilities at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Last year, Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for providing more than 700,000 documents, videos, diplomatic cables and battlefield accounts to WikiLeaks in the biggest breach of classified materials in U.S. history. The faculty have diverse interests and are drawn from several disciplines including clinical genetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, human embryology/teratology and neurology. A large clinical program of medical genetics operates from Seattle Childrens Hospital staffed by faculty from the Division. These clinical activities concentrate on pediatric genetics but also encompass adult and fetal consultations. At Seattle Children's full IP consultations are available and general genetics clinics occur regularly. Consultative services are also provided to the University of Washington Medical Center and Swedish Hospital. In addition, a variety of interdisciplinary clinical services are provided at Childrens including cardiovascular genetics, skeletal dysplasia, neurofibromatosis, craniofacial genetics, gender disorders, neurogenetics and biochemical genetics as well as others. In a study of 278 women with early onset breast cancer who did not have the BRCA genes, the researchers found that only 2.5 percent of the patients had inherited mutations that were actually clinically actionable. Experts don't yet know how to interpret most of the mutations discovered by the testknown as massively parallel gene sequencing. Results of the study, led by author Kara Maxwell, MD, PhD, a fellow in the division of Hematology-Oncology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, will be presented during the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago in early June (Abstract #1510). Some cheese microorganisms have effects you can easily see. Bacteria leave behind bubbles of carbon dioxide in Swiss. Mold sends blue veins through Stilton. But except for fresh varieties like ricotta or goat cheese, every cheese you taste has been ripened by microbes. Some are starter bacteria added to the milk at the beginning of the process; others are smeared on the outside of the cheese after its formed, or allowed to land and grow there naturally from the environment.
