Treatment And Control Of Malaria Improved Using New Genomics Technique

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2014

May 11, 2014 Wellcome Trust Single-cell genomics could provide new insight into the biology of Malaria parasites, including their virulence and levels of drug resistance, to ultimately improve treatment and control of the disease, according to new research funded by the Wellcome Trust and the National Institutes of Health. The findings are revealed in a study by researchers at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and published today in the journal Genome Research. Malaria infections commonly contain complex mixtures of Plasmodium parasites which cause the disease. These mixtures, known as multiple genotype infections (MGIs), can alter the impact of the infection due to parasites competing with one another and can drive the spread of drug resistance. MGIs are extremely common in regions with high levels of malaria infection but their biology is poorly understood. Up to 70 per cent of infections in sub-Saharan Africa are MGIs and we currently dont know how many genotypes are present and whether parasites come from a single mosquito bite or multiple mosquito bites says Shalini Nair, first author on the paper. Current genome sequencing techniques involve the chemical disintegration of samples of red blood cells from infected patients to obtain parasite DNA, which are then … Continue reading

SBRI backs Eagles genomic data technology

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2014

Eagle, the Cambridge UK bioinformatics specialist, has won a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition which will see the company further develop its technology for genomic data management and analysis. As a winner of the first phase, Eagle will receive a share of the 1.6 million fund available. This will be used to extend the capabilities of its existing technology platform Eagle Core, which has been developed to meet the demand for improved NGS technology in the healthcare sector. The extensions include improved study tracking and data sharing, streamlined sequence analysis, variant calling and annotation pipelines in order to scale up for the 100,000 genomes analysis. This will also improve data protection and security compliance in line with NHS Information Governance and HIPAA. After the completion of the initial six-month project, a further 8 million will be made available in phase 2 of the competition to those companies judged to have the best products once they have been developed and tested. Eagle CEO Abel Ureta-Vidal said: Improved and streamlined genomic analysis will play a key role in tackling rare diseases and cancer. In both cases, the causes are a combination of genetic and other factors, making the need for improved … Continue reading
