Autism-related protein shown to play vital role in addiction

Posted: Published on May 11th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 9-May-2014 Contact: Scott O'Brien sobrien12@partners.org 617-855-2110 McLean Hospital BELMONT - In a paper published in the latest issue of the neuroscience journal Neuron, McLean Hospital investigators report that a gene essential for normal brain development, and previously linked to Autism Spectrum Disorders, also plays a critical role in addiction-related behaviors. "In our lab, we investigate the brain mechanisms behind drug addiction a common and devastating disease with limited treatment options," explained Christopher Cowan, PhD, director of the Integrated Neurobiology Laboratory at McLean and an associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "Chronic exposure to drugs of abuse causes changes in the brain that could underlie the transition from casual drug use to addiction. By discovering the brain molecules that control the development of drug addiction, we hope to identify new treatment approaches." The Cowan lab team, led by Laura Smith, PhD, an instructor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, used animal models to show that the fragile X mental retardation protein, or FMRP, plays a critical role in the development of addiction-related behaviors. FMRP is also the protein that is missing in Fragile X Syndrome, the leading single-gene cause of autism and intellectual disability. Consistent with … Continue reading

Veteran files grievance, alleges VA psychologist practiced outside scope of expertise

Posted: Published on May 11th, 2014

A Purple Heart recipient from the Iraq War and his wife have filed a grievance against a doctor at the VA Medical Center at Fort Harrison, accusing him of practicing outside the scope of his expertise when evaluating the residual effects of traumatic brain injury. On Nov. 8, 2013, a screening panel with the Montana Board of Psychologists found reasonable evidence that VA psychologist Robert Bateen caused retired U.S. Army Capt. Charles Gatlin unreasonable risk of mental harm and financial loss by using the incorrect panel of tools to assess the residuals of his traumatic brain injury. The board also found cause that Bateen failed to consider Gatlins prior medical evaluations, and that Bateen erred by offering opinions in an area of psychology for which he was not qualified to practice. Hes a psychologist making neuropsychological observations, Gatlins wife and caregiver, Ariana Del Negro, said last week. Its as if the VA sends a patient with cancer to an eye doctor for assessment. The state Board of Psychologists agreed in part when it found reasonable cause in November. The results are now being contested by Assistant U.S. Attorney Victoria Fancis, whos representing Bateen before the Hearings Bureau with the Montana … Continue reading

Risks of HRT

Posted: Published on May 11th, 2014

HRT/ERT has undergone a pendulum like effect in its popularity. When it was first introduced, it was thought to be a wonder drug and then the association with endometrial cancer was recognized. The addition of progestin to the regimen minimized this risk and it was again very popular. Recent studies have shown an association with breast cancer and an increased risk of other conditions resulting in a more conservative approach to the prescribing of this treatment. The absolute risk of HRT in women in their 50s with use for less than 5 years is low and those who have been menopausal for >10 years or in their 60s are at greater risk. The increased risks noted here involves the use of HRT for > 5years. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the news that HRT increased this risk was the most shocking revelation of recent large studies. The risk was increased by 6.8 additional cases per 1000 women after more than 5 years of use of combined estrogen and progestin therapy. This risk was not increased in those women using estrogen alone. HRT also increases the risk of thromboembolic events, a fact known from the birth … Continue reading
