Erectile dysfunction drug may help treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2014

Approximately 1 in every 3,600 male infants worldwide is affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy an inherited condition that causes severe muscle weakness. At present, there is no specific treatment for the disease. But new research published in the journal Neurology suggests that certain drugs usually prescribed for erectile dysfunction may be effective. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by a defective gene for dystrophin a protein that helps maintain healthy muscles. Low levels or absence of dystrophin means the muscles lack nitric oxide a chemical that signals blood vessels to dilate during exercise so blood flow can increase. As a result of the way the gene is inherited, the condition primarily affects boys and young men. Onset of the disease usually occurs before the age of 6 years. As well as muscle degeneration, the condition can cause intellectual disability, congestive heart failure or irregular heart rhythm, back and chest deformities and respiratory disorders. Many individuals with DMD are treated with corticosteroids. This medication can help to slow muscle degeneration and reduce negative effects on the heart and lung. But the researchers of this study, including Dr. Ronald G. Victor of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, CA, note that … Continue reading

New registry data highlight substantial global differences in stroke prevention for patients with an irregular heart …

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2014

INGELHEIM, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For media outside of the U.S., the UK & Canada only Boehringer Ingelheim today announces first worldwide data from the GLORIA-AF Registry Programme highlighting substantial regional differences in how patients with an irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation, or AF) were treated with stroke prevention medicines. Data collected from nine countries over one and a half years (May 2011-January 2013) before the approval of novel oral anticoagulants4 show that a large proportion of patients with atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke were treated with antiplatelet therapy, such as ASA*, or did not receive any stroke prevention treatment at all. These patients were at increased risk of suffering a disabling or fatal stroke. The data were presented today at the World Heart Federations World Congress of Cardiology Scientific Sessions 2014 in Melbourne, Australia.1 Patients with atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder worldwide, are at five-times higher risk of stroke if not appropriately treated.2,5 Blood-thinners are essential for stroke prevention in these patients.6,7 Latest treatment guidelines recommend that AF patients deemed at risk of stroke** should take warfarin or a novel oral anticoagulant (NOAC), rather than less effective antiplatelet therapies such as ASA*.2,3 Warfarin has a narrow therapeutic window … Continue reading

Paralyzed patients successfully move legs after breakthrough treatment

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2014

A major breakthrough was reported in neuroscience research this week. Four paraplegic patients who participated in a study were able to voluntarily move their legs again after repeated epidural electrical stimulation of their spinal cords. The study was funded mainly by the Christopher and Dana Reeves Foundation, and the results were published today in the medical journal Brain. The pioneering treatment simulates the signals that damaged nerves would expect to hear from the brain. The study is the continuation of a previous one conducted in 2011 which resulted in a patient Rob Summers being able to stand again. The three new patients in this most recent study had all suffered a complete spinal cord injury and were paralyzed for years. Yet they were able to move their legs immediately following the implantation and activation of the stimulator. In fact the recovery time was so brief that it has led researchers to speculate that some nerve pathways may remain intact even after injury. Dr. Reggie Edgerton is a distinguished Neurosurgeon and Professor of Integrative Biology and Physiology at UCLA and was responsible for running this project. He remarked This is a wake-up call for how we see motor complete spinal cord injury, … Continue reading

‘Alien’ DNA used to create life

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2014

A scientific breakthrough has expanded the way genetic information can be stored. STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- All of life as we know it on Earth -- pigs, pandas, fish, bacteria and everything else -- has genetic information encoded in the same way, with the same biological alphabet. Now, for the first time, scientists have shown it is possible to alter that alphabet and still have a living organism that passes on the genetic information. They reported their findings in the journal Nature. "This is the first experimental demonstration that life can exist with information that's not coded the way nature does (it)," said Floyd Romesberg, associate professor of chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Medicine can greatly benefit from this discovery, Romesberg said. There's potential for better antibiotics and treatments for a slew of diseases for which drug development has been challenging, including cancers. The findings also suggest that DNA as we know it on Earth may not be the only solution to coding for life, Romesberg said. There may be other organisms elsewhere in space that use genetic letters we have never seen -- or that don't use DNA at all. "Is this alien life? … Continue reading

DNA forensics can help lost Nigerian girls

DNA forensics can help lost Nigerian girls Chibok school girls who escaped from the Boko Haram Islamists gather to receive informations from officials. Photo: AFP Scientists in the United States believe they can help identify Nigerias missing schoolgirls by using DNA technologyFrom AFP Forensic DNA technology could help identify and reunite with their families the more than 200 Nigerian girls who were kidnapped by Islamist militants, scientists said on Tuesday. Software already exists to match missing people with their relatives, and it has been used worldwide to identify and return more than 740 children who were trafficked, some across international borders. Most of all, forensic scientists in the United States and Spain say they are ready to help, free of charge. All they need to get started are DNA samples from family members of the lost schoolgirls. We would do this absolutely for nothing, said Arthur Eisenberg, chairman of the department of molecular and medical genetics at the University of North Texas (UNT). This is clearly a humanitarian effort, said Eisenberg who heads the UNT Centre for Human Identification, the lab that works with an international programme called DNA-Prokids, which aims to reunite families and deter human trafficking. First, the … Continue reading
