Production of synthetic SIRT1 as a dietary supplement may help prolong life, states Chemist Direct

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

(PRWEB UK) 9 May 2014 Over the course of the human life span the body ages and becomes less able to repair itself, allowing it to become more prone to disease and illness. In the ever developing field of scientific discovery researchers have become intrigued with the concept of finding a way to slow down age-related diseases and prolonging life through the use of medicine. Since the Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka (http://bit.ly/1kWb20u) first discovered iPS cells in adult tissue and pioneered mature cell regeneration, this field in medicine has become one of the most rapidly developing fields in biomedicine. A research team at the National Institute on Ageing at the National Institutes of Health in the US has discovered a promising strategy to arrest ageing by looking at a chemical called SRT1720 which activates a particular protein called Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1). Previous research has demonstrated that activating SIRT1 can have health benefits in various organisms, and it has been proposed as an anti-ageing protein. This study, published in the March edition of Research Journal: Cell (http://bit.ly/1od2gS5) focused on comparing the lifespan, health and diseases of mice fed the same diet, but with or without the addition of a SRT1720. Overall … Continue reading

Dont be fooled by quacks and fake meds

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

Beware of fake medicines and advertisements touting the purported miracles that stem cell therapy can do. This was the warning aired by former health secretary Esperanza Cabral at the Kapihan sa Manila at the Diamond Hotel last Monday. Contrary to what the ads claim, she said, stem cell therapy has not been scientifically proven to cure any disease or make anyone young again. It has been successful in a very few experiments, which is the reason quack doctors are taking advantage of it to make exaggerated claims that the therapy can cure the deadliest diseases known to man. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) very recently issued a similar warning against it. Stem cell therapy is the process of injecting into patients young cells taken from humans or sheep. The theory is that the young cells will rejuvenate the old cells of the patients and make them young again and cure whatever diseases they have. Although experiments are being conducted, no such results have been achieved. But that does not prevent foreign quack doctors from coming here and making all those exaggerated claims. Sadly, they are aided by some Filipino doctors. The reason is that in countries like the Philippines … Continue reading

Viagra, Cialis May Help Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Patients

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, May 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Drugs normally prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction in adult males may help boys who have a muscle disease called Duchenne muscular dystrophy, according to a new study. In the small study including just 10 boys with the disease, researchers found that the popular drugs Viagra and Cialis improved blood flow to the boys' weakened muscles. "Boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have a blood flow abnormality -- delivery of blood and oxygen to their muscles -- that does not increase the way it should during mild exercise," said lead researcher Dr. Ronald Victor, the associate director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles. Because the blood vessels do not enlarge in a normal way in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, muscles are starved for oxygen, according to Victor. Cialis and Viagra work by enlarging blood vessels, thus increasing blood flow, which is the same way these drugs help men with erectile dysfunction. The report was published online May 7 in the journal Neurology. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disease that affects boys and young men. It causes a progressive loss of muscle function to the point where those who … Continue reading

Bizarre fake autism cures prompt warning to parents over 'charlatans'

Posted: Published on May 9th, 2014

Families with autistic children are being warned not to fall for "charlatans" offering fake cures which can end up costing them thousands of dollars. The roll out the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will hopefully provide parents of autistic children some certainty, one of the things they crave most. West Australian autism specialist Professor Andrew Whitehouse sheets that sense of uncertainty home to the very nature of autism, which has no clear cause and no magic bullet cure. "People with autism tend to have characteristic behaviours of social impairment, language difficulties and some repetitive behaviours," Professor Whitehouse says. "Autism can be managed extremely well and people with it can live long and fulfilling lives. But at the moment there's no evidence for a cure." With no definitive answers Professor Whitehouse argues families of children with autism are left particularly vulnerable to quackery and claims of cures. The autism researcher has seen some truly bizarre things in his time. "I have come acrossmilkshakes (to) help cure autism, I have come across collation therapy, where you administer harmful chemicals to the person with autism," he said. "I have come across bowel bleaching. All of these are not just out there, they are … Continue reading

Parents of little boy with cerebral palsy complete Tough Mudder event to raise funds for new wheelchair 5:00pm Friday 9th May 2014 in News By Emma Joseph TOUGH CHALLENGE: Jo and Jon Dilling with sons Harrison and Reece. THE parents of a little boy with cerebral palsy have completed a gruelling physical challenge in order to improve the life of their son. Five-year-old Harrison Dilling, from Glenmoor Road, Ferndown, is quadriplegic and completely wheelchair-bound. His mum and dad Jo and Jon have set up Harrisons Trust Fund to pay for his treatment and equipment and are now desperately saving for a wheelchair adapted vehicle. Both keen athletes, the pair took part in the Tough Mudder London West in a bid to raise 5,000 for the vehicles deposit. The race, a 12-mile endurance test, includes swamps, electric shocks, walls to scale and chest-high ice cold water, but Jon and Jo were determined to set themselves a real challenge for Harrison. Jon said: Quite frankly and with having now completed it, to call it tough is an absolute understatement, but we wanted to do something which was as equally challenging and testing for us, as every day clearly is for Harrison. It … Continue reading

Standing on the pitchers mound in a major-league ballpark going with a full count, two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth with a 2-1 lead. The adrenaline rushing through my veins. My heart beating faster than it ever has. Baseball was my life. It was a part of me. I lived and breathed the sport that America calls the National Pastime. I played Little League growing up and practiced with my Mom and Dad whenever I got the chance. I made sure I did each drill right every time. I remember spending hours and hours at the ballpark doing drills again and again. Practice makes perfect, right? As I got older, my body began to change, along with my friends bodies. Yet somehow, I was getting worse at baseball while my friends were excelling at it. During my freshman year at Nathan Hale High School, I got cut from the baseball team. I didnt even make the freshman squad and didnt play high-school baseball that spring. I would never play … Continue reading

Therapy dog seen aiding ailing Rockport woman

ROCKPORT Many people may not give much thought to their mobility throughout a day. Our feet carry us wherever we want to go, from puttering around the house to walking along the beach. But this simple movement became challenging for Rose Rash, 62, a Rockport resident diagnosed just over 10 years ago with Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 1. The progressive disease affects her movement, especially balance and coordination. Now I can barely walk down the street, Rash said. The big thing for me is that I fall all the time. However, Rashs mobility could soon be greatly improved, but not through conventional medical treatment. Rash is looking forward to the day next month when Billy, a standard poodle and trained service and stability dog, will accompany her throughout her day. And an upcoming Benefit for Billy in Rockport could help others in need of a service dog, as well. Ive always been very active, Rash said earlier this week. One of the things I loved to do is ride my bike and go in the woods walking. But this changed when Rash was handed the SCA1 diagnosis, according to a letter to the community from her kids Anna Rico and Jim … Continue reading
