The damage to the brain may be caused by a number of factors depending on the mothers and childs health history, onset and type. The condition is either acquired at birth or congenital (present at birth). It can result from a variety of conditions: Speech In a similar way the patients have problems controlling their legs and arms, they also have problems controlling breath flow, jaw, lips, mouth and tongue. The might have problems with speech as a result. Dysarthria is the most common speech problem. Cerebral palsy doesn't always cause profound disabilities. While one child with severe cerebral palsy might be unable to walk and need extensive, lifelong care, another with mild cerebral palsy might be only slightly awkward and require no special assistance. Supportive treatments, medications, and surgery can help many individuals improve their motor skills and ability to communicate with the world. There is no cure, but various forms of therapy can help a person with the disorder to function and live more effectively. In general, the earlier treatment begins the better chance children have of overcoming developmental disabilities or learning new ways to accomplish the tasks that challenge them. The earliest proven intervention occurs during the infant's recovery in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Treatment may include one or more of the following: physical therapy; occupational therapy; speech therapy; drugs to control seizures, alleviate pain, or relax muscle spasms (e.g. benzodiazepienes, baclofen and intrathecal phenol/baclofen); hyperbaric oxygen; the use of Botox to relax contracting muscles; surgery to correct anatomical abnormalities or release tight muscles; braces and other orthotic devices; rolling walkers; and communication aids such as computers with attached voice synthesizers. For instance, the use of a standing frame can help … Continue reading

It is the leading cause of functional and developmental disability in children in the United States*, occurring in approximately 3.3 out of every 1,000 births, or around 10,000 infants per year*. While CP affects muscle function, it is actually a neurological disorder caused by damage to parts of the brain that control muscle function**. This usually occurs before, during or after birth**. Cerebral palsy may be caused by factors occurring to the fetus during pregnancy, or by trauma or asphyxiation during labor**. Unfortunately, there is no cure for cerebral palsy at this time. However, several treatment options are available … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy campaigner's joy after she gets go-ahead for life-changing operation 9:31am Thursday 8th May 2014 in News By Tui Benjamin, Reporter THE final step to independence beckons for a cerebral palsy campaigner who has been given the go-ahead to become one of the oldest people in the UK to undergo a life-changing operation. Laura Ramsden, aged 34, has battled for the right to irreversible neurosurgery which is usually only offered to children. After the operation, Laura, of Bowker Street, Radcliffe, will be pain-free for the first time, and should be able to walk unassisted. The complex and risky procedure Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) reduces tight muscle tone, known as spasticity, in the lower limbs by cutting nerves and has an upper age limit of between 35 and 40. It is only available in a handful of hospitals in the UK, but last week Laura received confirmation she will go have the surgery at the Walton Centre of Excellence in Liverpool this June. The victory marks the end of her two-year wait to be granted the procedure, which has seen her overcome numerous setbacks. The day before she was told the good news she found out other patients at the … Continue reading

Brain-injured teen receives $2 million in 'affluenza' case settlement

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2014

By Dana Ford and Suzanne Presto, CNN updated 9:50 AM EDT, Thu May 8, 2014 STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- The family of a teen critically injured when another teen, Ethan Couch, drove drunk last year has reached a settlement of more than $2 million. The case made national headlines after a witness claimed Couch was a victim of "affluenza" -- the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the Texas boy. For the crimes of driving drunk and causing a crash -- which killed four people and critically injured two -- Couch received no jail time. He was ordered to go to a lockdown treatment facility and sentenced to 10 years' probation. The settlement, reached this month, involves the case of Sergio Molina, who was riding in the back of Couch's truck the night of the accident. He suffered a brain injury and can no longer speak, or move. He is considered minimally responsive. "They told us that, basically, that's as much as he's going to rehabilitate," Sergio's brother, Alex Lemus, told CNN last year. In the six months since the accident, which took place in June, Lemus said medical bills had already topped $1 million. The … Continue reading

Run in a Dress for MS fundraiser set Saturday in Teutopolis

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2014

TEUTOPOLIS Run in a dress? Sure, if it's for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. It happens Saturday, May 10, the Run in a Dress for MS 5k run/walk and one mile family fun walk, starting and finishing on the Teutopolis Junior High School track. Organized by the Habing family last year to bring awareness to multiple sclerosis and to raise money to fight the disease, the event exceeded expectations, attracting more than 450 participants and raising more than $22,000. We think we can make this event bigger and have more of an impact for the multiple sclerosis community by getting the word out to Central Illinois, said Philip Habing, the event manager. The Habing family includes Philip Habing's parents, Lawrence and Rita, and his sisters, Maria, Monica, Elisa, Renee and Anna. We had already known a few people with MS in the area, Philip Habing explains. When one of my sisters was diagnosed in 2012, we began to research MS, including alternative treatment options and the prescription assistance programs available. The National MS Society provided the information and direction we needed. We also found out about fundraising assistance programs by different groups, he said. So our family and friends began planning … Continue reading

Symptoms and Treatment of Ataxia – Yahoo Voices – voices …

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2014

Although ataxia is not a specific disorder, it is a combination of symptoms related to a specific family of genes. Itt is an inherited affliction that has serious implications in its victims. Because it is not restricted to just one bodily system or just one tissue, it can have varying symptoms with diverse severities. Also called Louis-Bar Syndrome, Ataxia is transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. There is a gene called ATM, and ataxia is a result of the genetic mutations of that gene. Ataxia sometimes refers to a large family of diseases and disorders, though it is not universally inclusive. Ataxia may be referred to in connection with all different kinds of diseases. Since Ataxia is a genetic affliction, it is easily passed along from parents to offspring. If one or both parents have a family history of ataxia, they should be given genetic counseling and be made aware of the potential problems. There is no treatment for Ataxia, and most who suffer from it die in adolescence or early adulthood. This is because the body cannot easily sustain ataxic movement of the body, cells or organs. The most common symptom and sign of Ataxia is problems with movement. … Continue reading

Sam's incurable disease and a crazy dream come true at Safeco Field

Sam Bridgman had to stop playing baseball, but he never gave up the game he loves. Photo by Jeff Kennel, University of Portland Marketing Department, 2011 BY SAM BRIDGMAN Every kid has a dream. This was mine. Standing on the pitchers mound in a major-league ballpark going against a full count, two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth with a 2-1 lead. The adrenaline rushing through my veins. My heart beating faster than it ever has. Baseball was my life. It was a part of me. I lived and breathed the sport that America calls the National Pastime. I played Little League growing up and practiced with my Mom and Dad whenever I got the chance. I made sure I did each drill right every time. I remember spending hours and hours at the ballpark doing drills again and again. Practice makes perfect, right? As I got older, my body began to change, along with my friends bodies. Yet somehow I was getting worse at baseball while my friends were excelling at it. During my freshman year at Nathan Hale High School, I got cut from the baseball team. I didnt even make the freshman … Continue reading
