Genetic and Environmental Influences Are Equally Important Risk Factors for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise In the largest family study on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to date, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, along with a research team from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm Sweden and Kings College in London found that individual risk of ASD and autistic disorder increased with greater genetic relatedness in families that is, persons with a sibling, half-sibling or cousin diagnosed with autism have an increased likelihood of developing ASD themselves. Furthermore, the research findings showed that environmental factors unique to the individual (birth complications, maternal infections, etc.) were more of a determinant for ASD than previously believed. The population-based, longitudinal study, titled "The Familial Risk of Autism," was led by Abraham Reichenberg, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Preventive Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and was first published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The findings from this extensive, prospective study will help improve how we counsel families with children who suffer from ASD and autistic disorder, said Dr. Reichenberg. Currently, ASD affects nearly one percent of all children born in the United States. This study tells us that while … Continue reading

FAITH Stem Cell Research and Human Cloning by: FR. GAMMY TULABING I would like to share with you this article from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Questions and Answers What is a stem cell? A stem cell is a relatively unspecia-lized cell that, when it divides, can do two things: make another cell like itself, or make any of a number of cells with more specialized functions. For example, just one kind of stem cell in our blood can make new red blood cells, or white blood cells, or other kindsdepending on what the body needs. These cells are like the stem of a plant that spreads out in different directions as it grows. Is the Catholic Church opposed to all stem cell research? Not at all. Most stem cell research uses cells obtained from adult tissue, umbilical cord blood, and other sources that pose no moral problem. Useful stem cells have been found in bone marrow, blood, muscle, fat, nerves, and even in the pulp of baby teeth. Some of these cells are already being used to treat people with a wide variety of diseases. Why is the Church opposed to stem cell research using the embryo? … Continue reading

Bride-to-be has 60 days to find her fianc a stem cell donor

She said: Our friends and family in London and Bristol have rallied around, asking what they can do to help, and already at least twenty of them joined the Anthony Nolan donor register straight away. Any one of them could be a match for someone like Mike who needs a donor. It's so easy and straightforward to sign up. We started thinking that if we channel our energies into getting our friends, and friends of friends, and even strangers, to join the register, we could make a big difference. Mr Brandon proposed to Miss Robertson, 31, three weeks before she headed off on a six-month backpacking trip at the start of the year. Just two months later he started suffering from fatigue and night sweats. He visited the doctor who carried out blood tests and within four hours he learnt he had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Miss Robertson, a physiotherapist from Bristol, received the devastating news in a phone call from Mr Brandon when she was 5000 miles from home in Burma. She immediately flew home to be at his side. "I had been due to go on a three week trek in Nepal the following day, so if the news … Continue reading

Health Beat: Growing stem cells in space: Medicine's next big thing?

Posted: Published on May 6th, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Hemorrhagic stroke is responsible for more than 30 percent of all stroke deaths. It happens when a weakened blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain. Its something Jon Galvan experienced five years ago when he almost died from a hemorrhagic stroke while at work. "I was typing away and I felt a pop in my head," Galvan said. He was able to recover, but Dr. Abba Zubair, medical director of transfusion medicine and stem cell therapy at Mayo Clinic, Florida, said not everyone is as fortunate. "If it happens, you either recover completely or die," Zubair said. "Thats what killed my mother." Zubair said he wants to send bone marrow derived stem cells to the international space station. "Based on our experience with bone marrow transplant, you need about 200 to 500 million cells," Zubair said. But conventionally grown stem cells take a month. Experiments on earth have shown that stem cells will grow faster in less gravity. "Five to ten times faster, but it could be more," Zubair said. Hardik Soni, M.D., Combines Anti-aging Sculptra Aesthetic and Ultherapy to Lift, Tighten and Restore Youthful Volume …

Posted: Published on May 6th, 2014

Summit, NJ (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 Hardik Soni, M.D., Medical Director of Ethos Spa, Skin and Laser Centers in Summit and Englewood, New Jersey, is now offering the effective and long-lasting combination of Sculptra Aesthetic and Ultherapy as a non-surgical facelift alternative that takes years of the patients appearance. Sculptra Aesthetic is volume-restoring filler made of poly-l-lactic acid that stimulates new collagen production to replace the natural volume (fat) loss that occurs in the facial area during the aging process. Sculptra injections take only 15-20 minutes and provide natural-looking results that can last up to two years. Ultherapy, an intensive ultrasound treatment that takes an additional 30-90 minutes, works to lift and tighten loose or saggy skin on the brow, jawline, chin and neck. Ultherapy also works to stimulate collagen production in the deep tissue layers of the face. For anyone looking for an alternative to the surgical face-lift, the Sculptra Aesthetic and Ultherapy treatments could be the answer. Each works individually to produce skin-tightening and volumizing effects and multi-layer tissue stimulation that results in the full, firm facial features of youth. Individually, each treatment provides the patient with its own unique anti-aging benefits, but when used together, the results … Continue reading
