Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

A major medical gateway is set to open for those suffering from epilepsy. Florida lawmakers have set the stage for a specific type of low dose medical marijuana to become legal. Local advocates say this could change the way they live. "It's going to help a lot of children," said Susan Noble. Noble, the founder of Epilepsy Warriors is surprised, but glad Florida has passed a cannabis bill. The bill will allow a low dose of medicinal Marijuana known as "Charlotte's Web" to be prescribed to patients with epilepsy, including children. "Some of these children have seizures multiple times a day. Some of them have them every hour. And they could have ten seizures an hour, some children have 100 seizures in a day," Noble said. The bill states the marijuana, which comes in a liquid form, would be restricted to just .8 percent THC, that's the ingredient that gets users high. "It's not a cure. It's not a cure for epilepsy. It's another treatment options," Noble said. Noble is more interested in CBD, the lesser talked about ingredient in pot, used to treat seizures. "It's an option we just cannot not have," Noble said. But, as political science professor … Continue reading

Compound Formula Rehmannia alleviates dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-May-2014 Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Levodopa is the preferred treatment for Parkinson's disease in the clinic. However, long-term use of levodopa may lead to various motor complications, among which levodopa-induced dyskinesia is the most common, severely affecting patients' quality of life. Dr. Jiancheng He and co-workers from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China established a model of Parkinson's disease dyskinesia in rats, and treated these animals with Compound Formula Rehmannia. They found that Compound Formula Rehmannia alleviates levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease by modulating neurotransmitter signaling in the corpus striatum. The relevant article has been published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 4, 2014). ### Article: " Compound Formula Rehmannia alleviates levodopa-induced dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease," by Long Teng, Fang Hong, Chenguang Zhang, Jiancheng He, Haiying Wang (Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai, China) Teng L, Hong F, Zhang CG, He JC, Wang HY. CP Help Announces New Resource For Parents of Those With Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 The birth injury patient advocates at CerebralPalsyHelp.org are announcing the launch of a new resource site for parents of children affected by the neurological disorder. The CP Help Center is a national resource center providing the latest information on cerebral palsy, including research, treatment, causes and litigation news. Parents can learn more about their childs condition and how it may have been caused, get information on charities and other assistance, and decide if they should seek legal advice. Cerebral palsy is a classification of neurological disorders that affect muscle movement, coordination and posture. It is the leading cause of functional and developmental disability in children in the United States*, occurring in approximately 3.3 out of every 1,000 births, or around 10,000 infants per year*. While cerebral palsy affects muscle function, it is not a disorder of the muscles or nerves, but is caused by damage to parts of the brain that control muscle function**. This usually occurs before, during or after birth**. Cerebral palsy may be caused by factors occurring to the fetus during pregnancy, or by trauma or asphyxiation during labor**. Unfortunately, there is no cure for cerebral palsy at this time. … Continue reading

Monday Medical: Concussion management

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2014

Editor's note: A version of this article was published in December 2009. A concussion or mild traumatic brain injury occurs when a person receives a bump or blow to the head that causes the brain to shake inside the skull. This force disrupts the way the brain typically functions and can cause a change in mental status such as loss of consciousness, amnesia, disorientation, confusion or mental fogginess. A concussion is often a misunderstood injury because its symptoms are not always straightforward, said Michael Collins, Ph.D., a neuropsychologist and assistant director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Monday Medical columns publish weekly in the Steamboat Today's Yampa Valley Health section. Read more columns here. What: ImPACT Baseline Testing (parents must be present) When: 4:45 p.m. May 13 Where: SportsMed at Yampa Valley Medical Center Call: 970-871-2370 I see daily in my clinic that no two concussions are alike, and the injurys effects and recovery period are different in each individual, he said. Collins said research has shown that allowing enough healing and recovery time for the brain after a concussion is crucial in preventing further damage.
