Grey's Anatomy Recap: "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

One of the moments Grey's Anatomy fans have been dreading all season finally happened during Thursday's episode: The discovery of how Cristina Yang will be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial for good. When Dr. Russell, the head of cardiology, decides to leave the hospital because no one from Grey Sloan will ever win a Harper Avery Award, the board asks Yang to appeal her loss so they can set a precedent. She avoids the subject by flying off to Zurich to give a talk about 3D printing portal veins at a hospital where her ex Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) works. It turns out he was the one who invited her to speak at his hospital. Reuniting with Burke for the first time since their failed wedding, Burke asks Cristina to stick around to see how hi-tech his hospital is. The 49 3D printers he has would certainly help with Cristina's plans to someday print an actual heart. And Burke does want Cristina to come work at his hospital, but he's not looking to get back with her. In fact, he's married with two kids. She grapples with whether she could stand to be around him again, but he reveals that she … Continue reading

Hemp extract bill to treat epilepsy sent to Missouri governor

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

JEFFERSON CITY A personal plea from a senator whose 9-year-old son has intractable epilepsy caused tears on the Senate floor Thursday, followed by unanimous approval of a bill legalizing a promising marijuana-based treatment aimed at helping such victims. With the Senates vote, the bill to allow people with severe, persistent seizures to try an oil derived from cannabis plants as a treatment now goes to Gov. Jay Nixon. The legalization of oils high in cannabidiol, or CBD, but low in tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical that creates the high experienced from marijuana consumption, is part of a national trend. The CBD oil has shown promise in treating children with intractable epilepsy. The bill, which unanimously passed the Missouri Senate, would strictly regulate the production and distribution of CBD oil. Only two nonprofit companies would be licensed to grow cannabis plants and produce and distribute the oil to registered patients. A neurologist would have to certify the child or adult had already tried at least three other treatments. The bill also includes provisions for the states agriculture department to make rules to test the plants to make sure they are high in CBD and below 0.3 percent THC and audit the … Continue reading

Researchers reveal new cause of epilepsy

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Apr-2014 Contact: Ron Najman ron.najman@downstate.edu 718-270-2696 SUNY Downstate Medical Center A team of researchers from SUNY Downstate Medical Center (SUNY Downstate) and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (Sanford-Burnham) has found that deficiencies in hyaluronan, also known as hyaluronic acid or HA, can lead to spontaneous epileptic seizures. HA is a polysaccharide molecule widely distributed throughout connective, epithelial, and neural tissues, including the brain's extracellular space (ECS). Their findings, published on April 30 in The Journal of Neuroscience, equip scientists with key information that may lead to new therapeutic approaches to epilepsy. The multicenter study used mice to provide the first evidence of a physiological role for HA in the maintenance of brain ECS volume. It also suggests a potential role in human epilepsy for HA and genes that are involved in hyaluronan synthesis and degradation. While epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disordersaffecting approximately one percent of the population worldwideit is one of the least understood. It is characterized by recurrent spontaneous seizures caused by the abnormal firing of neurons. Although epilepsy treatment is available and effective for about 70 percent of cases, a substantial number of patients could benefit from a new therapeutic approach. "Hyaluronan … Continue reading

Mo. lawmakers pass bill legalizing cannabis oil for epilepsy

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

Mo. lawmakers emotional plea helps get cannabis oil bill passed Missouri lawmakers have overwhelmingly passed a bill that would make a cannabis extract a legal treatment for some patients with epilepsy. The extract contains very little of the substance that makes marijuana users feel high, but it has been shown to be effective in treating some of the symptoms of epilepsy. Patients will have to demonstrate that they've already tried other treatments without success. Missouri State Sen. Eric Schmitt of St. Louis helped push the measure through, saying the extract could be helpful to his 9-year-old son. "All I can do is hold him at night and I wonder what he might say to me if he's scared and all I can do is hold him and love him," Schmitt said. "We pray for something that might ease his condition." He said this extract won't have a recreational use. "You can't get high on this," he said. "It only has that medicinal value." There have been cases of families leaving Missouri to go to states with more lenient marijuana laws in order to get treatment for various medical conditions. Sydni Yunek, 10, moved from Kansas City to Colorado so she … Continue reading

by Chris Blank AP Posted on May 1, 2014 at 8:21 PM Updated today at 11:21 PM JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri residents with epilepsy that is not relieved by other treatments could use a cannabis extract under legislation given final approval Thursday after a state senator's passionate speech about his son. Sen. Eric Schmitt said families in Missouri are moving their entire lives to get treatment for their children and that they should be able to get it in their home state. The lawmaker's 9-year-old son, Stephen, has intractable epilepsy and watched Thursday's debate from the Senate chamber with family. "The sense of urgency is real for families that are making those decisions," said Schmitt, a Republican from St. Louis County. Legislation passed by the Missouri Legislature would allow use of a "hemp extract" containing little of the chemical that causes marijuana users to feel high and larger amounts of a chemical called cannabidiol, or CBD. Patients or their parents would need a registration card that would be issued by the state health department to Missouri residents. CBD oil only would be available after a neurologist has determined a patient's epilepsy isn't responding to at least three treatment … Continue reading
