Horses for healing: Derby Day gives community a chance to help the needy

Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

CROWNSVILLE, MD. Katie Parrys muscles were so weakened from cerebral palsy that when she rode her first horse at age 4, all she could do was lie down on its back. Nearly 20 years later on a recent spring day, Ms. Parry, 23, and her mother, Debbie, made their way from the stables at Maryland Therapeutic Riding. Ms. Parrys key chain jangled as her mechanized wheelchair bounced along the dirt road. SEE ALSO: Kentucky Derby: Rosie Napravnik looks for another first For most of her life, Ms. Parry has been riding horses with the therapeutic center. Her mother said riding helped her relax so much that she would fall asleep during rides. The lessons also helped Ms. Parry build strength and increase her muscle tone to the point where she can sit up in the saddle on her own. Shes progressed, Debbie Parry said. Shes got core strength now. Ms. Parrys story is just one of the many triumphs of the riding center in Crownsville. On Saturday, the farm is opening its pastures to guests for its fifth annual Derby Day, one of the few times the center asks for help. We have seen riders say their first words, take … Continue reading

The money will fund a life-changing operation in America f or the cerebral palsy sufferer who, as the Telegraph has previously reported, was let down when a free NHS op to loosen his stiffened legs was axed in February due to cancelled funding. The four-year-olds parents, Kate and Sam, have joined forces with the Tree of Hope charity which supports families of sick and disabled children in the UK who need specialist surgery, treatment and equipment. They have also taken to social media to promote their plight. Kate said: The response has been simply amazing with donations from far and wide, meaning were already three quarters of the way there and can now plan for Tristans future. Kate also set up a Facebook page which was spotted by fellow Finham resident Debbie Jones who got in touch offering to help. Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014

Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry (BN & NP) is a medical specialty committed to better understanding links between neuroscience and behavior and to the care of individuals with neurologically based behavioral disturbances.1 Neuropsychiatrists specialize in the assessment and treatment of the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral symptoms from disorders such as traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, Parkinson disease, and Alzheimer disease. The CME article in this issue and 4 articles in this Special Report are devoted to several important topics in this field. In their CME article, John J. Campbell III, MD, and Annya Tisher, MD, describe subtypes of deficits in executive functioning. They suggest a practical guide to its assessment, including pertinent history, and easy to perform office evaluations. Hal S. Wortzel, MD, offers a balanced perspective on a hot topic that we are frequently asked aboutchronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)and urges caution before prematurely concluding that we know more than what we do about the prevalence and risk factors for this disorder. The most accurate perspectives about CTE may not be gleaned from reports in the media. Marco Mula, MD, PhD, reviews the evaluation and treatment of patients with epilepsy. Parents need to be aware of the signs of problems that can appear weeks or even months after an injury. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar, File) Former Chicago Bears defensive back Dave Duerson. Former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling. Former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau. These are just a few of the former NFL players who have taken their own lives. All three were found to have signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative condition largely believed to result from repetitive blows to the head. These are tragic examples of the long-term effects of brain injuries in sports. Are high school or middle school athletes without those long playing careers at risk for suicide and other mental health problems as well? We have long feared that concussions and other traumatic brain injuries (TBI) could be more damaging for adolescents since their brains are still developing. A younger patient with a traumatic brain … Continue reading
