Garfield-Stone chemistry saves Spidey 2

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2014

Deep into "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," my 11-year-old companion was confused about a certain plot point justifiably, I'd say and demanded an immediate and thorough explanation. "Shh, not now. Later!" I hissed. Because, though I didn't admit it, I really didn't want to miss an Andrew Garfield-Emma Stone kiss. And who knew when the next one was coming? With great chemistry, you see, comes great kissing. Let's just say this unequivocally: Whether or not my young Spidey fan would agree, the best thing about the "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," the second installment of director Marc Webb's series reboot, is that infectious chemistry between Garfield and Stone. In fact, given that this overstuffed, overly long film is a sequel to a sequel, and that it spends a gazillion dollars retelling a story (in 3-D and IMAX) that the world already knows, you could argue that the Garfield-Stone dynamic is the real justification for the whole enterprise. This isn't just because the two happen to be real-life partners though it can't hurt. Garfield is a sensitive actor who brings a quirky blend of intelligence and goofiness to Peter Parker, and a welcome hipster edge to the role that the wide-eyed Tobey Maguire … Continue reading

Marlon Byrd: With Their Chemistry, Mets Can Win 90 Games Or More

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2014

NEW YORK SPORTS HEADLINES Get our weekday morning briefs direct from the WFAN newsroom NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Marlon Byrd believes in the Mets. And he doesnt even play for them anymore. The right fielder who was excellent for the Amazins in 2013 before being traded to the Pirates signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Phillies in November. The36-year-old veteran remains close with several Mets players, and he worked out with Lucas Duda and Josh Satin in the offseason. Byrd still has a tremendous amount of respect for the organization that took a flyer on him last year and paved the way for his lucrative deal with Philadelphia. And unlike many, hes not at all surprised that the Mets are off to a hot start and winning games. The chemistry over in that clubhouse theres a reason that the teams winning over there, Byrd said, according to WFANs Ed Coleman. Prior to the start of the season, it leaked that general manager Sandy Alderson challenged his players to win 90 games. He was criticized and mocked, and seemingly everybody predicted that the Mets would finish below .500 for the sixth year in a row. Well, how about this? The … Continue reading

Columbia Engineers Grow Functional Human Cartilage in Lab

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise New York, NYApril 30, 2014Researchers at Columbia Engineering announced today that they have successfully grown fully functional human cartilage in vitro from human stem cells derived from bone marrow tissue. Their study, which demonstrates new ways to better mimic the enormous complexity of tissue development, regeneration, and disease, is published in the April 28 Early Online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Weve been ablefor the first timeto generate fully functional human cartilage from mesenchymal stem cells by mimicking in vitro the developmental process of mesenchymal condensation, says Gordana Vunjak-Novakovic, who led the study and is the Mikati Foundation Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia Engineering and professor of medical sciences. This could have clinical impact, as this cartilage can be used to repair a cartilage defect, or in combination with bone in a composite graft grown in lab for more complex tissue reconstruction. For more than 20 years, researchers have unofficially called cartilage the official tissue of tissue engineering, Vunjak-Novakovic observes. Many groups studied cartilage as an apparently simple tissue: one single cell type, no blood vessels or nerves, a tissue built for bearing loads while protecting … Continue reading

No Room for Autism Treatment in Self-Funded Health Plans

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2014

Eight years ago, Shannon Penrod and her husband were struggling to raise their 2-year-old son, Jem. The toddler threw frequent tantrums, bit and kicked people, lost the vocabulary he had built up since he was 9 months old, banged his head on the kitchen floor, flapped his arms and ran around in circles, and swiped things off the dining table. When his pediatrician told the parents that the boy was autistic they decided it wasnt true. We were in denial, Penrod acknowledged, until people started saying, O my god, whats wrong with your child? But Jems parents did eventually seek treatment for him, enrolling him at age three in a regional center in the Los Angeles area to begin Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy. ABA therapy is a highly structured one-on-one coaching by trained teachers, and has become the most widely used autism treatment in the United States. In California, 21 regional centers state-funded non-profit agencies that function as case managers provide the bulk of the treatment, with some school districts providing some basic therapy. But ABA therapy is expensive, and treatment could cost upwards of $60,000 per year per person. The lifetime costs of treating one person with autism … Continue reading

New Book Provides Comprehensive Source of Research-Based Information on Treatment for Young Children with Autism

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2014

Los Angeles (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 The Handbook of Early Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders offers comprehensive, evidence-based information on early intensive behavioral intervention for autism. The book explores the evolution of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), reviews the neurobiology of ASD, including its implications for screening and treatment, and points the way forward for future research and practice. It gives researchers, practitioners, and academics the guidance to understand ASD better and to intervene more effectively. The book, edited by Jonathan Tarbox, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Dennis R. Dixon, Ph.D., Peter Sturmey, Ph.D., and Johnny L. Matson, Ph.D., was published on April 11, 2014. It is available for purchase at: http://www.springer.com/psychology/child+%26+school+psychology/book/978-1-4939-0400-6. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every 68 children in the United States is diagnosed with ASD, with one in 42 boys and one in 189 girls diagnosed. This makes it more prevalent than juvenile diabetes, pediatric cancer, and pediatric AIDs combined. Many questions surround ASD, and the goal of this book is to shed light on those important questions, said Dennis R. Dixon, Ph.D., chief strategy officer at Center for Autism and Related Disorders. Those questions include how early can accurate diagnoses be made?; at … Continue reading
