Michigan man gets bionic eye

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2014

........................................................................................................................................................................................ ANN ARBOR, Mich. A degenerative eye disease slowly robbed Roger Pontz of his vision. Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa as a teenager, Pontz has been almost completely blind for years. Now, thanks to a high-tech procedure that involved the surgical implantation of a bionic eye, he has regained enough of his eyesight to catch small glimpses of his wife, grandson and cat. Its awesome. Its exciting seeing something new every day, Pontz said during a recent appointment at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. The 55-year-old former competitive weightlifter and factory worker is one of four people in the U.S. to receive an artificial retina since the Food and Drug Administration signed off on its use last year. The facility in Ann Arbor has been the site of all four such surgeries since FDA approval. A fifth is scheduled for next month. Retinitis pigmentosa is an inherited disease that causes slow but progressive vision loss due to a gradual loss of the light-sensitive retinal cells called rods and cones. Patients experience loss of side vision and night vision, then central vision, which can result in near blindness. Not all of the 100,000 or so people in the U.S. with … Continue reading

Couples seeking IVF ‘face unfair postcode lottery’

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2014

Couples in London and the South East are being denied IVF treatment offered in other parts of the country because of a geographical lucky dip, a Conservative MP claims. Caroline Dinenage, MP for Gosport in Hampshire, said a desperate unfair postcode lottery dictates who receives IVF on the NHS. The geographical discrepancies are stark, she said. A couple in the North East or East Anglia will find that they have access to IVF in line with or above the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidance. But couples in the South East will find that they are only able to access one round of treatment. Ms Dinenage wrote for the website Conservativehome on the topic. She claimed that men and women who were desperate to have a child were being forced to go private to gain fertility treatment. She called for the treatment to be standardised. Peoples chances of having a child when they cant conceive naturally should not be down to a geographical lucky dip, she said. Access to a reasonable amount of IVF treatment should be universally available to those who need it. See original here: Couples seeking IVF 'face unfair postcode lottery' … Continue reading

Remember the American Chestnut Tree on Arbor Day

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2014

Today, April 25, 2014 is National Arbor Day and a reminder of the importance that individuals and groups need to plant and care for trees. This means ensuring that arboriculturists and foresters have access to the most up to date agricultural technologies. The American Chestnut blight is recent example of how genetic engineering has served as one of these vital technologies. A recent piece published in Scientific American told of the blight of the American Chestnut nearly wiped out by a fungal disease and efforts to genetically engineer the trees to resist the fungus and reintroduce healthy trees back into America forests. Ferri Jabrs A New Generation of American Chestnut Trees May Redefine Americas Forests examines the history of the American Chestnut going from its role of providing food and shelter for animals and people to nearly becoming obsolete. Before the early 1900s, one in every four hardwood trees in North Americas eastern forests was an American chestnut, providing copious food and shelter for animals and people alike. A New York City nurseryman named S. B. Parsons imported Japanese chestnut trees in 1876, which he raised and sold to customers who wanted something a little exotic in their gardens. Other … Continue reading
