EPSRC-funded book, Synthetic Aesthetics, launches at V&A

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Apr-2014 Contact: EPSRC Press Office pressoffice@epsrc.ac.uk 01-793-444-404 Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council The emerging field of synthetic biology crosses the boundary between science and design, in order to design and manufacture biologically based parts, devices and systems that do not exist in the natural world, as well as the redesign of existing, natural biological systems. This new technology has the potential to create new organisms for a variety of applications from materials to machines. What role can artists and designers play in our biological future? This Friday, the Victoria & Albert Museum's Friday Late turns the V&A into a living laboratory, bringing science and design together for one night of events, workshops and installations. It will also feature the official launch of a new EPSRC-funded book 'Synthetic Aesthetics: Investigating Synthetic Biology's Designs on Nature'. The book, by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Jane Calvert, Pablo Schyfter, Alistair Elfick and Drew Endy, emerged from a research project 'Sandpit: Synthetic aesthetics: connecting synthetic biology and creative design' which was funded by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the National Science Foundation in the US. Kedar Pandya, EPSRC's Head of Engineering, said: "This event and the Synthetic … Continue reading

Are Almonds An Optimal Snack?

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2014

Almonds examined for effects on diet quality, appetite, adiposity and cardiovascular disease risk factors at Experimental Biology 2014 MODESTO, Calif., April 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ Six new almond-related research studies will be presented next week in San Diego at the American Society of Nutrition (ASN)s Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with Experimental Biology 2014 (EB). The conference attracts an international audience of approximately 13,000 leading scientists specializing in various health disciplines. The science presented will reveal new insights on the effects of almond consumption on overall diet quality and health status, abdominal adiposity, measures of appetite and satiety, and cardiovascular risk factors. Presenting new research to this audience of scientists and health professionals is critical to turning the findings into practical application and recommendations, said Dr. Karen Lapsley, Chief Science Officer for the Almond Board of California. These results help to advance the evolution of our understanding of almonds beneficial effects as part of a healthy diet. In a satellite session on Sunday, April 27(i), researchers will explore the question, Are Almonds an Optimal Snack? a hot topic given that snacking has become a way of life for most Americans. In fact, 97% of Americans report eating at … Continue reading

University offers post-doc in feminist biology to counter ‘male, white, straight’ research

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2014

The University of Wisconsin-Madison sought to uncover and reverse gender bias in biology, which has led to the creation of a post-doctorate in feminist biology. The program is the first in the nation and probably the world, saidJanet Hyde, director of the campus Center for Research on Gender & Women, on the universitys website. Dr. Hyde is a professor of Psychology and Womens Studies who received her Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of California-Berkeley. SEE ALSO: Professor apologizes after blasting Republicans in class All human beings have gender stereotypes in their brain, Dr. Hyde told Campus Reform on Thursday. Gender stereotypes are pervasive people just dont see things or dont appreciate them or dont process them when they dont conform to stereotype notions. The first post-doctoral fellow, Caroline VanSickle, also responded to Campus Reforms inquiries about the program, saying via email: We arent doing science well if we ignore the ideas and research of people who arent male, white, straight, or rich. [] Feminist science seeks to improve our understanding of the world by including people with different viewpoints. A more inclusive science means an opportunity to make new discoveries. The universitys program in feminist biology begins in September. … Continue reading

Biology is no longer restricted to its qualitative quests. The huge amount of data being generated from the Genomics and proteomics research and other associated techniques has transformed biology into an increasingly quantitative science. There is a growing need for Bioinformatics skill to deal with this explosion of data. For many, especially those who are very little acquainted with the subject, Bioinformatics deals with research, development, or application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioral or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data. It involves the creation and advancement of algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theory to solve formal and practical problems posed by or inspired from the management and analysis of biological data. To put it in simpler terms, Bioinformatics is where the domain of fundamental biolog y meets with those of mathematics, statistics and computational sciences to analyze the data generated by large number of individual experimental data. The Bioinformatics domain is expanding fast and wide and this has already been stimulated to a significant extent by the completion of the human DNA sequence in the spring of 2003. The world bioinformatics market value … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy: Why Cristina Should Have Won The Harper-Avery Award

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2014

Cristina Yang was flat-out robbed by the Harper-Avery Foundation. Now that we know the truth, hopefully Cristina is going to fight back and claim the award she deserves more than anyone! Here are all of the reasons why Cristina deserved the Harper-Avery Award and more. Cristina Yang, portrayed by the brilliant Sandra Oh, found out the shocking truth about how and why she lost the Harper-Avery Award on the April 24 episode of Greys Anatomy. Now, weve compiled all of the reasons Cristina deserved that award and why she should fight for it. I dont know about you, but I am still not over the shocking truth behind Cristinas Harper-Avery Award loss. If Cristina was never eligible to win the award solely because she works for a Harper-Avery owned hospital, then why let her even be nominated in the first place? Plus, isnt it more scandalous for the Harper-Avery Foundation to deny Cristina the award even after she pulled in all of the votes? Ugh! Just like Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), I stand behind Cristina. She has been a brilliant doctor and a brilliant surgeon from the very start. Do you remember when Cristina was conducting heart surgeries on her own, … Continue reading
