Stress Could Activate "Crosstalking" Cell Signals That Turn Bodys Natural Wound Healing Process Against It

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2014

Durham, NC (PRWEB) April 23, 2014 Stress could activate "crosstalking" cell signals that decrease the bodys natural healing process after a wound occurs, according to a new study released today in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. The finding helps explain how stress impairs healing and, conversely, could lead to a way to overcome chronic wounds resulting from serious burns and other skin injuries. Chronic wounds are a major global health problem, with annual costs in the United States alone of more than $23 billion, said Roslyn Isseroff, M.D., of the University of California Davis and the Northern California Health Care Systems Department of Veterans Affairs. She was a lead investigator in the study along with Mohan R. Dasu, Ph.D. The precise process that prevents their healing is unclear except for two constants: a prolonged inflammatory response and the bacterial colonization of the wound bed. These two interrelated factors are thought to contribute to the wounds chronic state. Previous studies had demonstrated an increase in epinephrine (adrenaline), as occurs during stress, produces an increase in the activity of TLR2 (Toll-like receptor 2), a protein that appears to stimulate the early inflammatory process needed to set the steps of healing in motion. Together … Continue reading

Ban on free infertility treatment to be lifted

Ban on free infertility treatment to be lifted 7:10am Wednesday 23rd April 2014 in News By Barry Nelson, Health Editor NHS commissioners in North Yorkshire are to end a controversial ban on funding free infertility treatment for eligible couples. In recent years the former primary care trust in North Yorkshire refused to fund free in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment to protect existing services, unlike most of the rest of England. But the new GP-run Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) set up last year has decided it can now afford to provide free IVF treatment to eligible couples. This means that women in the area under the age of 40 who are having difficulty conceiving will now be offered up to two cycles of IVF treatment. Where a couple meet the specified criteria and a woman is under 40 years of age, the CCG will fund up to two full cycles of IVF, and where a woman is between 40 and 42, one full cycle. Dr George Campbell, lead for planned care at the CCG, said: We recognise how the old policy may have seemed unfair for local couples, especially when people living in other parts of the … Continue reading

Genetic Tricks Could Make Bionic Ears Hear Better

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2014

A CT scan showing a cochlear implant in the left ear of a guinea pig. Image: UNSW Australia Biological Resources Imaging Laboratory, NationalImaging Facility of Australia, and UNSW TranslationalNeuroscience Facility Scientists have devised a strategy they hope will one day make bionic ears even sharper. The idea is to make neurons inside the ear sprout new branches and become more sensitive to signals from a cochlear implant. The cochlear implant is arguably the most successful bionic device ever invented. More than 200,000 people with severe hearing loss have received one, allowing them to understand speech and hear things like barking dogs and fire alarms. But theres plenty of room for improvement. Pitch perception is not so good, and that impacts music appreciation and hearing in a complex environment like a noisy room, said Gary Housley, a physiologist and neuroscientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia, and the senior author of a new study out today in Science Translational Medicine. To appreciate what Housleys team did, you have to picture whats going on inside the inner ear. The bony, spiral cochlea is where sound waves get translated into the electrical language of neurons. Its essentially a coiled tube. … Continue reading

Above: The genomes of these twin infant macaques were modified with multiple mutations. The ability to create primates with intentional mutations could provide powerful new ways to study complex and genetically baffling brain disorders. The use of a genome-tool to create two monkeys with specific genetic mutations. The ability to modify targeted genes in primates is a valuable tool in the study of human diseases. By Christina Larson Until recently, Kunming, capital of Chinas southwestern Yunnan province, was known mostly for its palm trees, its blue skies, its laid-back vibe, and a steady stream of foreign backpackers bound for nearby mountains and scenic gorges. But Kunmings reputation as a provincial backwater is rapidly changing. On a plot of land on the outskirts of the citywilderness 10 years ago, and today home to a genomic research facilityscientists have performed a provocative experiment. They have created a pair of macaque monkeys with precise genetic mutations. Last November, the female monkey twins, Mingming and Lingling, were born here on the sprawling research campus of Kunming Biomedical International and its affiliated Yunnan Key Laboratory of Primate Biomedical Research. The macaques had been conceived via in vitro fertilization. Then scientists used a new method of … Continue reading
