Penn Bioinformatics Profiling Identifies a New Mammalian Clock Gene

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2014

PHILADELPHIA Over the last few decades researchers have characterized a set of clock genes that drive daily rhythms of physiology and behavior in all types of species, from flies to humans. Over 15 mammalian clock proteins have been identified, but researchers surmise there are more. A team from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania wondered if big-data approaches could find them. To accelerate clock-gene discovery, the investigators, led by John Hogenesch, PhD, professor of Pharmacology and first author Ron Anafi, MD, PhD, an instructor in the department of Medicine, used a computer-assisted approach to identify and rank candidate clock components. This approach found a new core clock gene, which the team named CHRONO. Their findings appear this week in PLOS Biology. Hogenesch likens their approach to online profiling of movie suggestions for customers: Think of Netflix. Based on your personalized movie profile, it predicts what movies you may want to watch in the future based on what you watched in the past. He thought the team could use this approach to identify new clock genes, given criteria already established from the behavior of known clock genes identified in the past two decades: We used a simple … Continue reading

Africa: Citizen Scientists Pitch New Uses for Paper Microscope

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2014

Photo: PrakashLab/Stanford University Stanford bioengineer Manu Prakash, PhD, is giving away 10,000 build-your-own paper microscope kits to citizen scientists with the most inspiring ideas for things to do with this new invention. Ten thousand 'print-and-fold' paper microscopes initially designed as low-cost medical diagnostic tools are being given away to researchers and citizen scientists who come up with novel ways to use them to test their ideas. The goal of the Ten Thousand Microscopes initiative, funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, is to create a crowdsourced lab manual for Foldscope, the low-cost microscope launched earlier this year by a US bioengineering team that combines pragmatic, origami design with sophisticated micro-optics. The idea is to make "microscopy for everyone", says Manu Prakash, a bioengineering researcher at Stanford University, United States, who led the development of the frugal innovation to address the lack of cheap, easy-to-use diagnostic tools for diseases in remote and impoverished communities. Assembled from a single sheet of paper, Foldscope microscopes are fitted with tiny ball lenses - about the size of a grain of salt - that can magnify samples up to 2,000 times. Yet, as well as being lightweight, Foldscope is durable and, at roughly 50 … Continue reading

Chipping Sodbury woman treks the Sahara for charity 10:10am Tuesday 22nd April 2014 in News A CHIPPING Sodburywoman has headed off to the Sahara to raise money and awareness for the charity RP Fighting Blindness (RPFB), which supports sufferers of Retinitis Pigmentosa. Lisa Taplin, who works in insurance and suffers from RP herself, left last Saturday for a 100km hike across the desert. She is walking for up to eight hours a day with a group of 21 and returns on Good Friday. Most of the group are registered blind and have RP, leaving them with limited peripheral vision and very little vision at night. There is no treatment or cure and many sufferers will eventually lose their sight. 25, 000 people in the UK suffer from the disorder. Lisa said: Ive always wanted to walk for RP. Since November we have trained as a group a couple of times, including a great 17 mile walk in Bournemouth. Its going to be a challenge but I am sure that willpower, adrenaline and camaraderie will pull me through. They are a really nice group of people. Lisa aims to raise awareness and 2,800 for the charity, with the help of local … Continue reading

Thirty years ago, Dale von Bieker was diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs disease. He was given two and a half years to live. But everybodys body is different and a lot of people when theyre diagnosed with Lou Gerrings disease or any terminal disease, they do give up as well. He says that he hasnt taken any medication for his disease, but instead decided to go the natural route. Some things that I think has helped me over the thirty years is having faith in God, positive thinking and having my exercise equipment. Furthermore, he says, he went to see a naturopath, taking his advice, and he says he eats a well-balanced diet. Although people do ask him for advice on their conditions, he is quick to emphasize that Im not a doctor. Im really not that well educated but over the past 30 years, Ive studied natural medicine, health, Ive worked with a lot of people. They ask me questions about, say, Crohns Disease or Shingles or all kinds of things and Ive advised them and they got better. But, Im really not legal, but if they ask me what am I supposed to say? A little bit ago, he … Continue reading

Stem cell blood set for UK human trials …

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2014

Stem cell blood set for UK human trials within three years Blood made from stem cells will be tested in patients within three years as the UK aims to be the first to succeed in a long worldwide quest to provide an alternative to natural blood. The Wellcome Trust says that, after four years of research, its 5m Blood Pharma programme has made enough progress turning stem cells into red blood cells to start the first in-man trial by late 2016. That would be followed the following year by more extensive clinical testing, in which researchers would compare patients response to donated and man-made blood transfusions. Marc Turner, medical director of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service who is leading the programme, said: Producing a cellular therapy which is of the scale, quality and safety required for human clinical trials is a very significant challenge, but if we can achieve success with this first in-man clinical study it will be an important step forward to enable populations all over the world to benefit from blood transfusions. The researchers have been working with both human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) adult cells genetically reprogrammed to return them … Continue reading
