Ecology Team Improves Understanding of Valley-Wide Stream Chemistry

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise A geostatistical approach for studying environmental conditions in stream networks and landscapes has been successfully applied at a valley-wide scale to assess headwater stream chemistry at high resolution, revealing unexpected patterns in natural chemical components. Headwater streams make up the majority of stream and river length in watersheds, affecting regional water quality, said Assistant Professor Kevin J. McGuire, associate director of the Virginia Water Resources Research Center in Virginia Techs College of Natural Resources and Environment. However, the actual patterns and causes of variation of water quality in headwater streams are often unknown. Understanding the chemistry of these streams at a finer scale could help to identify factors impairing water quality and help us protect aquatic ecosystems, said Gene E. Likens, president emeritus and distinguished senior scientist emeritus with the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies and the University of Connecticut. Results of the study that used a new statistical tool to describe spatial patterns of water chemistry in stream networks are published in the April 21 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science by a team of ecosystem scientists, including McGuire and Likens. The data used in the new … Continue reading

Susanna Reid promises chemistry in her new dawn on ITV

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2014

When you have done Strictly live on a Saturday night in front of millions, Ill never be that nervous again, she said. Becoming a household name has come at a considerable cost to the 43-year-old mother of three, with the breakdown of her 12-year marriage to Dominic Cotton, a sports journalist, stirring talk of the Curse of Strictly. The toll on the shows stars down the years has been harsh: Countdown presenter Rachel Riley left her husband; newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky broke up with her boyfriend; Denise van Outens marriage collapsed; Joe Calzaghe relationship with his dancing partner Kristina Rihanoff did not last. Reid hints that it was her 1,200-mile a week commute from London to Salford to present BBC Breakfast that placed a greater strain on her marriage than her brief spell in sequins and spandex. Yes, there are new routines as my working pattern has changed, she said. I get to do the school run when a lot of working mums dont get home until bedtime. Of course, I will bring this side of me to the programme: as a journalist, you bring all of your experience. Despite the roll call of stars who have failed to revive ITVs … Continue reading
