Stem cell 'doctor' faces more raps for Ateneo grad's death

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2014

MANILA - A businessman has updated the charges he filed with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against a wellness center operator who allegedly caused the death of his daughter, a cum laude graduate of Ateneo de Manila University, last year. Bernard Tan added the illegal practice of medicine to the charges of estafa and reckless imprudence resulting in homicide he filed in October 2013 against Antonia Carandang-Park, her husband Young Joe Park and some center personnel over the death of his daughter Katherine Grace, 23, on July 4, 2013. Tan based the additional charge on a certification issued in August 2013 by the Professional Regulation Commission showing that Park does not appear in the database of physicians, which contains the names of those duly authorized to practice medicine in the Philippines. In an interview, Tan said Kate allegedly underwent stem cell treatment for Hodgkins lymphoma, a type of cancer, at the Green and Young Health and Wellness Center owned by Park in Tagaytay City during the last quarter of 2012. We went to her clinic and she told us that she already treated a similar case and it would only take three months to treat my daughter We did … Continue reading

Parma Medical Center honored for stroke treatment efforts

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2014

PARMA, Ohio The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association presented University Hospitals Parma Medical Center with the Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the associations. The hospital's community outreach, and a free program planned for May 27 to educate the public on stroke signs, symptoms and treatment, are among the reasons it received the award. "We take a lot of pride in our continued dedication to the community, and the excellent care we can provide," said Dr. Austin Wellock, medical director of the Emergency Department and director of the stroke program. Collaboration between EMS, the Emergency Department and the stroke team results in prompt diagnosis and effective treatment of stroke patients, hospital officials said. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association said stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. Also, 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke annually. Get with the Guidelines is a hospital-based quality improvement program from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association that provides hospitals with the latest research-based … Continue reading

New Treatment for Spinal Cord Injuries: MedlinePlus Health …

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2014

A novel combination of electrical stimulation and physical rehabilitation has restored some measure of limb control to 4 patients who were paralyzed following spinal cord injuries. Experts from the National Institutes of Health discuss the breakthrough in the journal Brain. In 2009, 16 electrodes were attached to the injured spine of 1 paraplegic patient. Electric pulse stimulation was then paired with an assisted exercise program. Within 7 months, a man with zero movement and only limited sensation below his chest regained a significant degree of leg control demonstrating an ability to stand, without help, for up to 4 minutes. How? The investigators think the treatment may somehow reawaken brain-body connections that remain dormant, but intact, even after serious injury. The same approach has since been tried with 3 more paraplegic patients. Within days, all regained some voluntary control of their lower limbs an achievement that could dramatically change the way spinal cord injuries are handled going forward. I'm Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV, with the news the doctors are reading health news for healthier living. Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 21, 2014) -- A group of scientists from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging has found interesting new information in a study on depression and neuropsychological function in Parkinson's disease (PD). Published in the journal Psychiatry Research, the study, which assessed cognitive function in depressed and non-depressed patients with PD, found that the dopamine replacement therapy commonly used to treat motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease was associated with a decline in cognitive performance among depressed Parkinson patients. In contrast, non-depressed Parkinson patients cognitive function improved on dopamine replacement therapy. The study also found that mood in depressed Parkinson's patients was actually worse while on dopaminergic medications. "This was a surprise," said Lee Blonder, Ph.D., the study's principal investigator. "It is the opposite of our original hypothesis that both groups of PD patients would improve in cognitive performance on dopaminergic medications, and that mood in the depressed PD group would also improve." A cohort of 28 patients with PD -- 18 nondepressed and 10 depressed -- were given a baseline series of tests to assess cognitive function and the incidence and severity of … Continue reading

MS patients here hope for access to drug that works

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2014

Published: Friday, April 18, 2014 at 9:53 p.m. Last Modified: Friday, April 18, 2014 at 9:53 p.m. A neurologist, a chiropractor and an orthopedic surgeon all weighed in on Allen's symptoms, which included tightness in his right leg and an overall stiffness in his body, but no one could pinpoint the culprit. Then Allen, of Ormond Beach, came to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, and after several MRIs and a spinal tap, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. First came the walking stick, then the wheelchair. That was in 2005, and nearly 10 years later, Buddy, now wheelchair-bound, has gotten progressively worse. "Time is not necessarily my friend," said the 51-year-old. "I can't really walk at all." After Buddy's diagnosis, he signed up for Google Alerts on everything regarding MS especially treatment information. He shared that information with his doctor, Dr. Daniel Kantor, the director of the Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center at UF Health Shands in Jacksonville. "Dr. Kantor would actually talk to me about each one," Allen said. And then one drug emerged that got both Allen and Kantor excited. The drug itself was not actually brand-new once called Campeth, it was initially used as a cancer drug. … Continue reading
