Mutant Protein in Muscle Linked to Neuromuscular Disorder

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Sometimes known as Kennedys disease, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by slowly progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Researchers have long considered it to be essentially an affliction of primary motor neurons the cells in the spinal cord and brainstem that control muscle movement. But in a new study published in the April 16, 2014 online issue of Neuron, a team of scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say novel mouse studies indicate that mutant protein levels in muscle cells, not motor neurons, are fundamentally involved in SBMA, suggesting an alternative and promising new avenue of treatment for a condition that is currently incurable. SBMA is an X-linked recessive disease that affects only males, though females carrying the defective gene have a 50:50 chance of passing it along to a son. It belongs to a group of diseases, such as Huntingtons disease, in which a C-A-G DNA sequence is repeated too many times, resulting in a protein with too many glutamines (an amino acid), causing the diseased protein to misfold and produce harmful consequences for affected cells. Thus far, human … Continue reading

Home videos could help diagnose autism, study suggests

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

Autism Joan Raymond TODAY contributor 16 hours ago While scientists are still trying to unravel the complex genetic and environmental causes of autism, one thing is clear: Getting a diagnosis can often be a lengthy and frustrating process. But simple home videos could make diagnosing autism easier, resulting in earlier treatment, new research suggests. Researchers at Stanford University and Harvard University wanted to determine whether a common autism clinical evaluation tool could be used looking at home videos of children, explains senior author Dennis Wall, Ph.D, associate professor of pediatrics in systems medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. Autism is diagnosed by observing behaviors, and getting a diagnosis can sometimes take a year or more, he says. We thought home videos could help identify some of the core features of autism while kids are in a natural environment, not being evaluated in a doctors office, which can be a difficult environment for anyone. The scientists gathered 100 short YouTube videos showing children ages one-to-15 years at play for the study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. Forty-five of the videos were tagged by their creators with words like autism, autism spectrum disorder, Aspergers, or with behaviors such as … Continue reading

Stroke study could change treatment worldwide

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dr. Thomas Brott, a neurosurgeon at the Mayo Clinic, said about 100,000 people a year go under the knife to prevent stroke. They either get surgery or a stent. "Those are excellent, safe treatments," he said. Now, he's about to embark on a new study to find out if medicine can be just as effective. "The medicines that so many people in Jacksonville take every day -- the statins, the blood pressure medicines, drugs for diabetes," he said. "The medical treatments now are so good, that we can ask the question, which is better?" The study is being funded by a $39.5 million grant awarded to the Mayo Clinic. It funds a seven-year clinical trial that will enroll nearly 2,500 patients in 120 centers in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. Action News asked Brott why the Jacksonville campus was chosen to lead the study. He said, "The doctors and the other health professionals here have been interested in carotid disease for a long time." Brott has already led one successful stroke study. He says the number of stroke patients has been cut in half over the past 30 years because people have quit smoking and … Continue reading

Goldman Sets out on Record Breaking Cross-Country Run for Brain Injury Association of America

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 16, 2014 San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee gave Jessica Goldman a rousing send off this morning as she left the front steps of San Francisco City Hall. Goldman is running across the country in an attempt to break a world record, running from City Hall in San Francisco to City Hall in New York a distance of more than 3,000 miles. Mayor Lee counted Goldman into the start, officially sending her off at 8:15 a.m. PDT. Goldman, who will be running across the United States using a modified jogging stroller filled with supplies, is raising funds for the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) while she attempts to break the women's trans-America run record. Her goal is to raise $5 for each mile she runs. The current, official women's transcontinental world record was set in 1978 and stands at 69 days, two hours and 40 minutes. In order to break the record, Goldman must run between the two city halls with a GPS tracking device that records her position every 10 minutes. In addition, she has to have an official video and signatures from witnesses at the beginning and end of the trip, as … Continue reading

Cancer drugs block dementia-linked brain inflammation, study finds

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

A class of drugs developed to treat immune-related conditions and cancer -- including one currently in clinical trials for glioblastoma and other tumors -- eliminates neural inflammation associated with dementia-linked diseases and brain injuries, according to UC Irvine researchers. In their study, assistant professor of neurobiology & behavior Kim Green and colleagues discovered that the drugs, which can be delivered orally, eradicated microglia, the primary immune cells of the brain. These cells exacerbate many neural diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as brain injury. "Because microglia are implicated in most brain disorders, we feel we've found a novel and broadly applicable therapeutic approach," Green said. "This study presents a new way to not just modulate inflammation in the brain but eliminate it completely, making this a breakthrough option for a range of neuroinflammatory diseases." The researchers focused on the impact of a class of drugs called CSF1R inhibitors on microglial function. In mouse models, they learned that inhibition led to the removal of virtually all microglia from the adult central nervous system with no ill effects or deficits in behavior or cognition. Because these cells contribute to most brain diseases -- and can harm or kill neurons -- the … Continue reading

Private eggs freeze offer for woman

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2014

An artist who suffers from Crohn's Disease has been offered private financial support to freeze her eggs before she undergoes chemotherapy, her solicitors have announced. Lizzy Rose, 25, who has Crohn's Disease, was offered private funding to freeze her eggs before chemotherapy after losing a battle for NHS funding The offer was accepted "with gratitude" by Lizzy Rose, 25, who cannot afford the treatment, just days after she lost a High Court battle for NHS funding. Ms Rose, from Margate in Kent, fears that the "imminent" bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy treatment she needs because of her debilitating disease will render her infertile. Clinicians at King's College Hospital in south east London applied on her behalf for NHS funding so her eggs could be frozen before she undergoes the chemotherapy. The application for a type of fertility preservation treatment known as oocyte cryopreservation was refused by Thanet Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). Ms Rose's legal challenge to the refusal was rejected at London's High Court on Tuesday this week, and it was announced that she was making a last-ditch bid to the CCG to reconsider her case. Mr Justice Jay ruled that a March funding refusal, and earlier similar decisions in … Continue reading
