A different BEAT: Brain injury and post-traumatic care

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

He also sustained bone fractures, in his left arm and leg. When he woke up, he could not recognise his wife. He was shouting obscenities and remained agitated for days. His wife was afraid of him, an otherwise gentle person and loving father of two. His sleeping habits were erratic. He refused to eat and he spat at anyone who came near. He tried to get out of bed several times a day and his speech was incoherent at times. He had to be restrained for his own safety. This continued for a few more days before he slowly began to calm down. However, he continued to be confused for several weeks more. He slowly became more aware of his surroundings and was finally able to recognise his wife and family. He could not recall what had happened to him. He could not remember anything about the accident nor his erratic behaviour. What he went through was not a form of insanity but, a common reaction following traumatic brain injury, known as post traumatic amnesia or PTA. TEMPORARY IMPAIRMENT Post traumatic amnesia is a temporary cognitive impairment thats common among traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. It is a state during … Continue reading

Woman with cancer skips treatment to support daughter, 8, in pageant

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

Tue, Apr 15, 2014 by Charlene Chua She diced with danger to see her daughter shine. Ms Lily Foo has a rare form of cancer that requires chemotherapy. But when her daughter, Naomi, eight, took part in the Little Cinderella Singapore 2014 pageant last weekend at Downtown East, she chose to risk her health to support her. Ms Foo, who was scheduled for chemotherapy sessions under the Gynaecological Cancer Centre at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital on April 4 and 5, skipped both treatments. It was a dangerous thing to do as it will make the cancer cells stronger and make her fight harder, said a specialist. But Ms Foo, 31, a hair salon assistant, believes she did the right thing. She said: "My daughter is more important than my health. "Even though my doctor was very angry and scolded me and said that skipping even one chemotherapy session is significant, I went ahead anyway. "It's worth it, even if my condition worsens. I only have one daughter." She added: "I know that I have to get better in order to be there for Naomi in the long run. Gene panels may be useful, cheaper alternative to whole-genome sequencing, study finds

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 14-Apr-2014 Contact: Krista Conger kristac@stanford.edu 650-725-5371 Stanford University Medical Center STANFORD, Calif. As many as 10 percent of women with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer have at least one genetic mutation that, if known, would prompt their doctors to recommend changes in their care, according to a new study by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The women in the study did not have mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 (mutations in these genes are strongly associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer), but they did have mutations in other cancer-associated genes. The study was conducted using what's known as a multiple-gene panel to quickly and cheaply sequence just a few possible genetic culprits selected by researchers based on what is known about a disease. Although such panels are becoming widely clinically available, it's not been clear whether their use can help patients or affect medical recommendations. "Although whole-genome sequencing can clearly be useful under the right conditions, it may be premature to consider doing on everyone," said James Ford, MD, who directs Stanford's Clinical Cancer Genetics Program. "Gene panels offer a middle ground between sequencing just a single gene like … Continue reading

UCI Team Discovers Bone Marrow Stem Cells' Potential In Stroke Recovery

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

By Estel Grace Masangkay Bone marrow stem cells may help in stroke recovery, according to a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvines Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center. Neurologist Dr. Steven Cramer and biomedical engineer Weian Zhao together analyzed 46 studies evaluating the use of a type of multipotent adult stem cells mostly processed from the bone marrow called mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in animal models of stroke. Results showed that MSCs were superior to control therapy in 44 out of the 46 studies. Dr. Cramer said Stroke remains a major cause of disability, and we are encouraged that the preclinical evidence shows [MSCs] efficacy with ischemic stroke. MSCs are of particular interest because they come from bone marrow, which is readily available, and are relatively easy to culture. In addition, they already have demonstrated value when used to treat other human diseases. The MSCs effect on functional recovery was shown to be robust regardless of other factors such as dosage, time of administration relative to the stroke onset, or administration method. An earlier report focusing on MSC mechanisms of action explained how the cells were attracted to the injury sites and began releasing a … Continue reading
