By James Q. Lynch, Gazette Des Moines Bureau DES MOINES Iowa Rep. Clel Baudler has gone from being on the Marijuana Policy Projects list of worst legislators last year to backing the legalization of a marijuana derivative for treatment of seizure disorders. Its time, the Greenfield Republican and former Iowa State Patrol trooper said Wednesday afternoon after meeting with representatives of the Iowa Epilepsy Foundation. The foundation has been lobbying lawmakers this session, often coming to the Capitol with their children who have seizure disorders. As a mother of a special-needs child you have to be optimistic, said Maria La France of Des Moines, the mother of a 12-year-old son who is epileptic. Shes spent much of the year at the Statehouse lobbying lawmakers. I naively believed that once it was explained and people understood the benefits, minds could be changed. Baudler has done his own research, but he doesnt discount the impact of La France and other mothers of special needs children and those children. These little kids are taking some drugs that are really hot, Baudler said. So if we educate ourselves and possibly we can give them some relief, thats a good thing. Baudler isnt about to … Continue reading

Formal Complaint Filed Against Bentonville Schools

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

BENTONVILLE, AR (KNWA) - Families are accusing the Bentonville School District of unfair treatment toward students with Autism and other developmental disabilities. An attorney out of Little Rock filed a complaint with the Arkansas Department of Education on March 27. In it, Theresa Caldwell says several students with Autism were denied "Appropriate research-based behavioral interventions and subjected to direct physical restraint". Bentonville School District Spokesperson, Mary Ley, issued a statement saying "The Bentonville School District takes pride in the education and services provided to each student. The students mentioned in Ms. Caldwell's most recent complaint are no exception. We absolutely do not agree with the allegations asserted by Ms. Caldwell. The Bentonville School District stands ready to provide the most effective, research-based instructional support possible for all of our students, including students with Autism." Parents behind this complaint want to move their children to a private school in Fayetteville that caters specifically to children dealing with Autism, and they are hoping for reimbursement from the district. Caldwell said hearing dates are set for May 13 through early June. This isn't the first time the Bentonville School District has faced legal action. Back in early March, we told you about a … Continue reading

Changing treatments, technology for autism helping young adults

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 11, 2014) Its a diagnosis more and more parents are hearing: autism. During Autism Awareness Month, therapists are highlighting new technology and how treatments have changed since autism was first discovered. Mother Beth Brown and her son Kyle began their journey to find the right treatment nearly 20 years ago. At the age of two he did not develop language and so we had him tested, said Brown. Since then Kyle has had nearly every kind of therapy available. As he got older, some of his behaviors became more aggressive and destructive. Thats when his family found Damar Services where Kyle now lives and goes to school. Within the last year, he has begun using iPad technology to communicate. The thing I like most about the iPad is theres voice and sound, so theres voice with I want chips please or I want to see my mom, said Brown. Kyles destructive behaviors are better. He can work with staff to make choices even without his own words and take videos to show new caregivers his routine. The iPad has replaced Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) for many people with autism who arent able to speak on their … Continue reading

Trial provides hope for treatment of deadly strokes

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

A regional hospital network is enrolling patients in an international trial to find a treatment option for the most deadly form of stroke. Premier Healths Clinical Neuroscience Institute with six locations including Atrium Medical Center in Middletown will be one of 70 centers in the United States, Europe and Israel to participate in the clinical trial originating out of Johns Hopkins University. The study called MISTIE III is being funded at a rate of $11.7 million for the first two years by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders & Stroke at the National Institutes of Health. The study is focused on intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) strokes, in which a blood vessel in the brain has burst and caused blood to leak into the brain and clot, said Dr. John Terry, a neurointerventionalist at Miami Valley Hospitals Clinical Neuroscience Institute. Its one of the most deadly forms of stroke and the stroke we have the least options for treatment, Terry said. This trial could potentially be game changing in terms of providing treatment modality for these types of patients. Nearly 800,000 people in America have a stroke each year. Terry said about 20 percent of strokes are ICH; with a mortality rate … Continue reading

Paralysed men move again with spinal stimulation

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2014

Four paralysed men have been able to move their legs for the first time in years after electrical stimulation of their spinal cords, US doctors report. They were able to flex their toes, ankles and knees - but could not walk independently. A report, in the journal Brain, suggests the electricity makes the spinal cord more receptive to the few messages still arriving from the brain. Experts said it could become a treatment for spinal injury. The spinal cord acts like a high-speed rail line carrying electrical messages from the brain to the rest of the body. But if there is any damage to the track, then the message will not get through. People with spinal cord injuries can lose all movement and sensation below the injury. Zap A team at the University of Louisville and the University of California have been pioneering electrical stimulation of the spinal cord below the injury. Three years ago they reported that Rob Summers - a keen baseball player who was paralysed from the chest down in a hit-and-run car accident - was able to move his legs while supported on a treadmill. Now three more patients, who had been paralysed for at least … Continue reading
