Avera Medical Minute AMcK: Researching the human genome

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2014

You probably wouldn't guess it, but some of the world's foremost genetics research is happening right here in South Dakota. Last Fall we introduced you to the rare partnership that Avera has with genetics research in the Netherlands. Now we'll give you a closer look at the research being done. At the Avera Institute for Human Genetics, scientists continue to dive into the deep end of the gene pool. "Things just continue to amaze me on how we progress and the findings we find!" Said Dr. Gareth Davies, a molecular geneticist and the scientific director for the institute. Thanks to the collaboration with the Netherlands Twin Registry, researchers here in Sioux Falls have access to more than 40,000 DNA samples to help further their study. "They (the samples) are stored with their co-twin and also with their parents; so each row we have two twins and then mom and dad." Said Dr. Davies. Studying twins gives scientists a better understanding on the role genetics play in behaviors and disease because identical twins share the same DNA; that is until you look very closely. "What we find is that if you look at copy number variations not all identical twins need … Continue reading

Genetic therapy attempts to remedy genetic disorders through the application of new genes. If you're interested in pursuing a career in medical or biological research, continue reading about this field to determine if it's a good fit for you. Genetic therapists find ways to cure harmful genetic flaws by replacing a non-functioning or mutated gene with a normal gene. These scientists use vectors, which are often viruses, to transfer a replacement gene into the appropriate cell. Genetic therapy techniques may eventually cure genetic disorders that currently affect thousands of people around the world, but the field is still in the early stages of development. Therefore, very little specific information about gene therapy is available. However, Education-Portal.com has some information about related academic programs and career opportunities that you could find useful if you're interested in learning more about this field. Educational programs in gene therapy are only available at the doctoral degree level, but undergraduate programs in biology and molecular biology may explore topics related to the field, including gene expression, cell structure and genetic mutations. Entry into doctoral programs is highly competitive and primarily offered by some of the most prestigious universities in the United States. The rigorous curriculum … Continue reading

Genetics – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about the general scientific term. For the scientific journal, see Genetics (journal). Genetics (from the Ancient Greek genetikos meaning "genitive"/"generative", in turn from genesis meaning "origin"),[1][2][3] a field in biology, is the science of genes, heredity, and variation in living organisms.[4][5] Genetics is the process of trait inheritance from parents to offspring, including the molecular structure and function of genes, gene behavior in the context of a cell or organism (e.g. dominance and epigenetics), gene distribution and variation and change in populations. Given that genes are universal to living organisms, genetics can be applied to the study of all living systems, including bacteria, plants, animals, and humans. The observation that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding.[6] The modern science of genetics, seeking to understand this process, began with the work of Gregor Mendel in the mid-19th century.[7] Mendel observed that organisms inherit traits by way of discrete "units of inheritance". This term, still used today, is a somewhat ambiguous definition of a gene. A more modern working definition of a gene is a portion (or sequence) of DNA that codes for … Continue reading
