The Blast Gauge System Continues to Aid in the Advancement of Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

(PRWEB) April 09, 2014 The Blast Gauge System developed by BlackBox Biometrics, Inc. (B3) was recently cited as revolutionizing Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), with regards to the systems data capture capabilities used to detect events related to injury. The article, published by The Daily Beast on March 23, 2014, details B3s pioneering efforts on overpressure and TBI and the vast contribution the technology has already had on the welfare of Soldiers. The Blast Gauge System provides the capability to capture complex data on an otherwise invisible threat, by recording a service member's exposure to blast overpressure. With the push of a button, the gauge emits a discreet visual cue alerting unit medics and leadership when further evaluation is required, guiding triage and treatment for damage that can result from these concussive forces. Its already in use in every branch of the US Armed Forces, internationally, and in all levels of Law Enforcement, from local to federal. The prevalence of injury due to explosive blasts in Iraq and Afghanistan is significant. In the latest report on blast injuries by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), Gulf war and health, volume 9: Long-term effects of blast exposures, explosive weaponry is stated to account for … Continue reading

Henry Ford Hospital researcher wins 2014 Abraham White Distinguished Science Award

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-Apr-2014 Contact: Dwight Angell dwight.angell@hfhs.org 313-850-3471 Henry Ford Health System DETROIT Michael Chopp, Ph.D., scientific director of the Henry Ford Neuroscience Institute at Henry Ford Hospital, won the 2014 Abraham White Distinguished Science Award for his discovery of the role of a protein in the treatment of brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. The award, given by George Washington University, honors an individual for his or her contributions to science and medicine. Dr. Chopp is being honored for developing a new pharmacological agent that is also naturally produced in the body called Thymosin beta-4. Thus far, results have shown that Thymosin beta-4 is highly effective for the treatment of neurological diseases. Studies from Dr. Chopp and his colleagues have shown that Thymosin beta-4 improves neurological function after stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and diabetic peripheral neuropathy in adult rats; this improvement in neurological function derives, at least in part, by increasing the formation of protective myelin around nerve fibers in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Dr. Chopp will receive the award in October in Rome, Italy, where he also will present a keynote address. Previous recipients of this award include more than 10 Nobel laureates and … Continue reading

Opiate addiction crosses all sectors, Mass. Senate panel is told

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

WEBSTER State Sen. Jennifer L. Flanagan, D-Leominster, has traveled the state over the last few weeks hearing people talk about addiction. She intends to file a budget request by the end of the month to fund prevention and treatment. Ms. Flanagan, who chairs the Senate Special Committee on Drug Abuse and Treatment Options, has heard recurring themes: Prescription painkillers such as Vicodin and Percocet are prescribed too freely after minor procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions; there aren't enough treatment beds available; and opioid pills and heroin are deadlier and reaching a younger population than ever before. On Tuesday, Ms. Flanagan was at Webster Town Hall at a listening session hosted by state Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. The hearing was attended largely by public safety officials from southern Worcester County towns. Ms. Flanagan said afterward that she heard more from this session's participants about emergency medical services, schools and the entire spectrum dealing with addiction. And she hoped that legislative remedies could target money to small towns that lacked extensive school or community resources or transportation for people to get to treatment. Judge Timothy M. Bibaud spoke of one area that will distinguish the region soon a drug court … Continue reading

AAVLife Formed To Advance Gene Therapy For Friedreich's Ataxia

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

By Estel Grace Masangkay The Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) announced the birth of a new company, AAVLife, for the rapid development of a promising gene-therapy program for the treatment of cardiomyopathy in Friedreichs ataxia (FA). The founding of AAVLife is based on the groundbreaking research of FARA-funded scientist Dr. Hlne Puccio. Dr. Puccio and her colleagues reported significant results showing that gene-replacement therapy using an adeno-associated virus to deliver the frataxin gene missing in patients with FA prevented and corrected cardiac damage in an FA mouse model. Jennifer Farmer, FARA Executive Director, said, When we first learned of Dr. Puccio's results and saw that she was demonstrating prevention and correction of the cardiomyopathy at both the functional and cellular levels we were beyond excited because this gave us evidence that we could attack the cardiomyopathy, which takes an individual's life at an early age. While we also want to have therapies that treat the neurological aspects of the disease, the significance of the cardiac disease is often under appreciated. FA is a rare, degenerative, life-shortening, neuro-muscular disorder that affects balance and coordination in both children and adults. As the disease progresses it affects other organs including the pancreas, skeletal … Continue reading

Study: Testosterone therapy can damage brain health in Caucasian men

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

FORT WORTH, Texas, April 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ads touting testosterone replacement therapy are ubiquitous on radio and television. But medical research has determined that its success at enhancing libido may come at a price. Researchers at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth report that while testosterone replacement therapy can damage brain health in some Caucasian men, Mexican-Americans appear to be protected from negative effects of the sex hormone. In Caucasian men with elevated oxidative stress, testosterone replacement therapy raises the risk of damage to brain cells, said Rebecca Cunningham, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Neuroscience. But that's not the case for Mexican-Americans, who do not appear to be affected by oxidative stress. The findings, published in the April issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, could lead to a better understanding of the role ethnicity plays in brain diseases and cognition. "Different factors appear to drive dementia," Cunningham said. "And these factors are dependent on the ethnicity of the person." Oxidative stress, which can determine whether testosterone protects brains cells or damages them, occurs when there are more free radicals produced in the body than antioxidants. Many studies have found between 20 percent and … Continue reading

Japanese stem cell scientist stands by "phoney" research

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

TOKYO: A young female scientist accused of fabricating data made a tearful apology live on Japanese television Wednesday for "mistakes" in her research, but insisted her ground-breaking conclusions on stem cells were accurate. Haruko Obokata, 30, blamed her youth and inexperience for errors in her methodology, but said she had managed to create the building-block cells capable of growing into the specialised cells of the brain, liver, heart or kidneys. "I apologise with my whole heart to my co-authors... and many others for causing trouble because of my insufficient efforts, ill-preparedness and unskilfulness," a visibly shaken Obokata told a press conference. "To many people there may be too many unbelievable mistakes, but that does not affect the conclusion," she said. Obokata was feted as a modern-day Marie Curie after unveiling research that showed a simple way to re-programme adult cells to become a kind of stem cell. So-called Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency (STAP) cells were hailed as a breakthrough that could provide a ready supply of the base material for much-needed transplant tissue at minimal cost. Campaigners said it represented a leap forward in the fight against degenerative diseases. Her profile -- a young woman in a world dominated by … Continue reading

Gloria Arroyos stem cell therapy doc blamed for cancer patient's death

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2014

A doctor offering stem cell therapy may face charges for the death of a cancer patient who allegedly underwent treatment similar to that administered to former president and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. This was after it was found out that she is not a licensed doctor in the Philippines. A report on GMA News TV's "News To Go" on Wednesday said a complaint has been filed against Dr. Antonia Carandang-Park at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) by Bernard Tan, who claims that his daughter, Kate, died after going through the said alternative treatment.Cancer patient Kate Tan received stem cell therapy from Dr. Antonia Carandang-Park, Gloria Arroyo's doctor. Park owns the Tagaytay-based Green & Young Health and Wellness Center where Arroyoburdened by persistent trouble with her cervical spinesought treatment in 2012. In an interview with GMA News, Tan said his daughter, who had Hodgkin's lymphoma (a type of cancer of the blood), was given "the same treatment that [Park] did with Gloria," which included "juicing diet, vegetable diet... acupuncture coffee enema, at 'yun na nga, stem cell." Stem cell therapy introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. "Ang sabi niya, 'Give … Continue reading
