Dismay over Renwick State Ward Home backflip

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

April 6, 2014, 4:36 p.m. Lived at Renwick State Ward home: Leeallison Downie. Picture: Sahlan Hayes When it came time for Leeallison Downie to give evidence to the royal commission into child abuse, she was asked if she wanted compensation. Ms Downie was insulted. What she wanted was to ensure the treatment 30,000 sick, orphaned and ''stolen'' children experienced at the Renwick State Ward Home in Mittagong over 100 years was never forgotten - so it did not happen again. The commission has recommended police prosecute former Renwick staff. But Ms Downie has been left reeling by the O'Farrell government's abandonment of a promise made by Family and Community Services Minister Pru Goward to preserve the institution as a children's museum and youth centre. Instead, the government wants to sell the site to the highest bidder, as Landcom subdivides nearby land for housing. The proposal for the museum, to be run by former residents, had the backing of the local council and historians, who had collected hundreds of photographs and stories. Wingecarribee deputy mayor Larry Whipper said it would be an ideal place for the school groups who travel to Canberra each year from Sydney to stop and learn the … Continue reading

As testosterone use grows, questions on risks await answers

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

PHILADELPHIA -- A dozen years ago, a major federal study shattered the deeply held belief that menopausal hormone therapy was the key to keeping women of a certain age healthy, sexy and in good moods. By showing the therapy did more harm than good, the study shriveled up lucrative hormone sales and set off a wave of lawsuits. Flash forward. It looks, as Yogi Berra said, like deja vu all over again -- this time for men. Even as female hormone replacement was collapsing, male hormone replacement was catching on. This wasn't because of convincing evidence that boosting testosterone helps men fight the toll of aging. It was mostly driven by the introduction of convenient, rub-on testosterone products starting in 2000 and the selling of those products as an answer to low energy, low libido, low mood -- what marketers call "Low T." Now that the quintessential male steroid is a $2 billion market -- with nearly 3 percent of men over 40 estimated to be taking it in 2011 -- there are signs of trouble. Two recent studies suggest testosterone supplementation raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and death. The Food and Drug Administration has begun an investigation, … Continue reading

University of Iowa hopes to use sequencing to better diagnose and treat patients

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

Some patients with a suspected genetic disorder will go on what medical professionals call a diagnostic odyssey to find the cause of their symptoms. A sample is run through the HiSeq 2000, a high-throughput sequencing system in the DNA lab at the University of Iowa Eckstein Medical Research Building in Iowa City. The green dots on the screen show a cluster of the fragment being sequenced. The lab also uses a HiSeq 2500, which can complete sequencing in 27 hours to the HiSeq 2000's 12 days. The Iowa Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Iowa is now offering whole exome sequencing, which is among several initiatives the institute is pursuing to further personalize medicine for patients. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG) But those explorations, on occasion, can come up empty, frustrating patients and prompting health care providers to seek outside expertise. Last month, the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics at the University of Iowa began offering such expertise through whole exome sequencing. The genetic test, which analyzes a portion of about 20,000 genes in the human genome in hopes of helping practitioners diagnose and treat a patient, is among several initiatives the institute is pursuing to further personalize medicine for … Continue reading

New study sheds light on genetic drivers of fatal pediatric cancer

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2014

New insights on the genetic drivers behind a rare type of fatal pediatric brain cancer may lead to the development of new patient-targeted treatments, a new study suggests. Each year about 30 children in Canada are diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a pediatric cancer for which there is no effective treatment. Because DIPG tumours occur in the middle of the brainstem specifically in the "pons" region that controls vital functions such as breathing, heart regulation and movement doctors are not able to surgically remove them. As well, biopsies are rarely performed on the tumours, meaning researchers have faced challenges investigating the genetic landscape of DIPG. But in a new study from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, researchers have uncovered the genetic drivers of DIPG. The study, published online Sunday in the journal Nature Genetics, found that DIPG is comprised of three molecularly distinct subgroups: "MYCN," "silent" and "H3-K27M." "Although previously considered to be one disease, DIPG represents three distinct subgroups with different methylation, expression, copy number alteration (CAN) and mutational profiles," the authors write. The results from the study show that DIPG tumours are distinct from adult brain cancer, the study says. Dr. Cynthia Hawkins, a neuropathologist and … Continue reading
