Summerize your skin

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

Here are some tips to get a glow this season The sky has shed off its big fluffy clouds, baring the suns unrelenting heat to microwave-hot levels. This is bad news for the skin, says Dr. Dara Angela Chavez, head doctor for Aesthetic Medicine and Stem Cell Specialist at Cathy Valencia Skin and Body Centre in Makati. While we have been taught since grade school that it is healthy to get a daily dose of Vitamin Dwith the sun being the main source thereofthose who put a premium on maintaining a youthful look already know that UV rays play a big factor on skin aging. Sun exposure puts you at risk for several thingswrinkles, sun spots, pimples, pigmentation or melasma, and skin cancer, Chavez says. Those with oily skin are more prone to have pimples in summertime because oil and sweat from the heat plus accumulated debris can clog pores. This leads to whiteheads, blackheads, and if infected with bacteria, pimples. She explains. Melasma, on the other hand, gives a map-like pigmentation, and she cautions that if you wait too long to treat it, it will become very difficult to remove. Chavez lists down some things to remember to keep … Continue reading

30% of aesthetic medicine clinics in Taiwan close down in 2yrs

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

Joy Lee The China Post Publication Date : 31-03-2014 About 30 per cent of the new aesthetic medicine clinics were closed down within two years due to a furious price war and constant medical disputes, the Chinese Society of Cosmetic Surgery and Anti-Aging Medicine (CSCSM) announced yesterday. Since its establishment 20 years ago, the CSCSM reviews the current situation and development of Taiwan's cosmetic surgery industry, especially the development of aesthetic medicine clinics in recent years. Dermatologist Sung Feng-yi said that opening an aesthetic medicine clinic requires at least NT$10 million (US$328,000) to cover a renovation of the premises and the purchasing of all medical equipment. However, even if the clinic owner spends extra on promoting the clinic, most of the clinics cannot survive for more than two years, said Sung. According to Sung, the operation of new aesthetic medicine clinics is getting more difficult as a result of competitive pricing and commercials on TV. Some aesthetic medicine clinics even hired inexperienced doctors who recently graduated from medical schools, which caused medical disputes and decreased the degree of confidence the public has in the industry, said Sung. Novel study into breast cancer origins paves way for personalized treatment

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 31-Mar-2014 Contact: Tomas Llewelyn Barrett BarrettTL1@cardiff.ac.uk Cardiff University Breast cancers can look and behave very differently. Understanding why and how they do so is key to designing more tailored therapies for patients and sparing them unnecessary treatments. In a new study published by the Journal of Pathology, Dr Matt Smalley from Cardiff University treads new ground in exploring what drives breast cancers to look and behave so differently from one another. "The ultimate aim of this research is to be able to take a more personalised approach to medicine," said Dr Smalley from Cardiff University's European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute. "We hope that in doing so, patients get the therapy best suited to their variety of breast cancer and avoid unnecessary treatment. "To understand what might be influencing the differences between individual breast cancers, we have used two different genetically modified mouse models in which breast cancers originate in different cell types in each model, by means of a genetic 'trick'," he explained. "In one part of the study, we created the same cancer-predisposing genetic errors in each of the two cell types. In another part, we created different genetic errors in the same cell type. … Continue reading

Stroke patients should receive customized palliative care

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

People recovering from a stroke should have a well-coordinated medical team to personalize care, optimize quality of life and minimize suffering, according to a scientific statement published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. The statement is the first in the United States to outline fundamental palliative care for stroke survivors. Palliative care is patient- and family-centered care that improves life by anticipating, preventing and treating suffering. "The majority of stroke patients need access to some form of palliative medicine," said Robert Holloway, M.D., M.P.H., lead author of the statement and professor and chairman of the neurology department at the University of Rochester in Rochester in New York. "The stroke team and its members can manage many of the palliative care problems themselves. It encourages patient independence and informed choices." Palliative care should be a collaboration between patients, families, a stroke team and various providers, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, primary care providers, nurses and therapists, he said. As a stroke survivor or family member, you should expect your healthcare provider to: "Stroke is a devastating disease that has received little attention in the area of palliative care so far," Holloway said. Nearly 800,000 people have strokes annually. About 130,000 stroke-related deaths … Continue reading

Brain Aneurysms: More Than Just a Headache

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

An aneurysm a ballooning or bulging out of an artery where the wall is weak can wreak havoc if it bursts. When aneurysms rupture in the brain, the resulting hemorrhage can cause stroke, coma, brain damage or other serious problems. In fact, approximately forty percent of ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal and only twenty percent of patients survive with no permanent damage. There is no clear reason why a brain aneurysm forms, but there are many things that can contribute to its development. Things such as smoking, hypertension, family history, traumatic head injury and other disorders may increase a persons risk of developing an aneurysm. A ruptured aneurysm is a serious health risk that should be attended to immediately. Along with a severe headache, other symptoms can be; neck stiffness, drowsiness, nausea, mental confusion, dizziness, and vomiting. The most severe consequence of brain aneurysm rupture is the tear that allows blood into the space surrounding the brain, causing stroke called a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Ten to 20 percent of those who have a subarachnoid hemorrhage will die before getting to a hospital. Of those who survive, approximately thirty percent will have moderate to severe disabilities. Though not all brain aneurysms rupture, … Continue reading

New Role Discovered for Enzyme Could Have Implications for Cancer and Neurologic Disease

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey research published in Nature Communications Newswise New Brunswick, N.J., March 31, 2014 Research from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey shows that a new function discovered for a long-studied enzyme could have implications for the diagnosis and treatment of some cancers and neurological disease. The work involves superoxide dismutase 1 (Sod1), an enzyme that for nearly half a century has been known to remove a specific radical byproduct created during the energy-producing process of cell metabolism. This superoxide byproduct comes from a family of byproducts known as reactive oxygen species (ROS). These byproducts can modify fats, proteins and DNA in a chemical reaction called oxidation, causing these biological molecules to lose functions. Low levels of these byproducts can cause normal cells to become cancerous. At higher levels, cell death and damage to tissues and organs can occur. In the study, published in the current edition of Nature Communications (doi: 10.1038/ncomms4446), X.F. Steven Zheng, PhD, and colleagues show that when cells have a high content of ROS byproducts and are under oxidative stress, the Sod1 enzyme helps to remove other types of ROS byproducts in addition to superoxides … Continue reading
