Kelvin Hewitt's penis was chopped off when he was attacked at a travellers camp in Teesside The dad-of-seven whose penis was hacked off in a bloody attack is facing a lifetime of treatment. Kelvin Kelly Hewitt, 40, has been released from hospital but looks set to undergo plastic surgery and may need hormone replacement therapy amid fears he has lost use of his testicles. As he spent his first day at home he admitted he felt wrecked. If Kelly lacks testosterone he could suffer fatigue and mood changes and need regular injections. Kellys ex Debbie Lewis said his family were devastated when he was found by the A66 near Middlesbrough at 4.50am on March 12 hunting for his severed penis, which was never found. But yesterday Debbies mum Christine Mclachlan said: Kelly is a tough cookie, he just gets on with things. It is thought he was attacked at a travellers site in South Bank, Teesside. Police want to unravel the missing 11 hours before Kelly was discovered. Suggested scenarios have included an attack on the builder by a love rival and a case of mistaken identity. A man, 22, has been arrested and bailed. Read more here: Penis chop … Continue reading

Ancient Virus DNA Gives Stem Cells the Power to Transform

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

Charles Q. Choi A virus that invaded the genomes of humanity's ancestors millions of years ago now plays a critical role in the embryonic stem cells from which all cells in the human body derive, new research shows. The discovery sheds light on the role viruses play in human evolution and could help scientists better understand how to use stem cells in advanced therapies or even how to convert normal cells into stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they are capable of becoming any other kind of cell in the body. Scientists around the world hope to use this capability to help patients recover from injury and disease. Researchers have struggled for decades to figure out how pluripotency works. These new findings reveal that "material from viruses is vital in making human embryonic stem cells what they are," said computational biologist Guillaume Bourque at McGill University in Montreal, a co-author of the study published online March 30 in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. Viral Invasion To make copies of itself, a virus has to get inside a cell and co-opt its machinery. When one type of virus called a retrovirus does this, it slips its own genes into … Continue reading

Scientists Discover a Number of Novel Genetic Defects Which Cause Oesophageal Cancer

Posted: Published on March 31st, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise A team of scientists from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore (CSI Singapore) at the National University of Singapore and National University Cancer Institute Singapore (NCIS), and their collaborators from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre, UCLA School of Medicine, demonstrated that a number of novel genetic defects are able to induce oesophageal cancer. The research group, led by Professor H. Phillip Koeffler, Senior Principal Investigator at CSI Singapore and Deputy Director of NCIS, has conducted a successful comprehensive genomic study of oesophageal squamous carcinoma, a type of very aggressive cancer prevalent in Singapore and Southeast Asia. This novel study was first published online in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics on 30 March 2014. In this study, the researchers comprehensively investigated a large variety of genetic lesions which arose from oesophageal squamous carcinoma. The results showed enrichment of genetic abnormalities that affect several important cellular process and pathways in human cells, which promote the development of this malignancy. The scientists also uncovered a number of novel candidate genes that may make the cancer sensitive to chemotherapy. The researchers findings provide a molecular basis for the comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of oesophageal carcinoma as … Continue reading

REPAIR, REGENERATE & RENEW: Cutting-Edge Stem Cell Research at Tisch MS Research Center of New York In 2013, Tisch MSRCNY made stem cell science history. Our adult stem cell treatment received FDA approval for a Phase I Clinical Trial that has the potential to repair the damage caused by MS. This exciting milestone took over ten years to reach and brings indescribable hope to MS patients and their loved ones all over the world. Our stem cell therapy is the star of the research program at the Tisch MS Research Center of New York (Tisch MSRCNY), a 501(c)(3), independent, non-profit research center dedicated to finding the cause of and cure for multiple sclerosis (MS). The Center focuses on patient-based research, bringing findings rapidly from the laboratory into clinical application to treat symptoms of MS and to halt or reverse damage caused by the disease. From our preclinical models, we know that stem cells injected into the spinal fluid can have significant benefit in terms of improved neurological symptoms. Parents of boys with Duchenne urge drug OK

Posted: Published on March 30th, 2014

WASHINGTONA wheelchair by age 12, maybe 15 if he were one of the lucky ones. A ventilator would be next and then would come the casket, probably before he turned 30. That was what Terri and Bill Ellsworth expected for their son when doctors confirmed his diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a debilitating and fatal disease striking one in 3,500 boys. Instead, Billy has become an active, happy teenager who likes to dance to Beatles songs, walk around at classic car shows, hike on local trails and jog in his living room along with avatars of Michael Jackson and Elton John he created for his Wii video game. He's like a lot of other 13-year-olds but for an awkward gait and the Wednesday afternoons he spends at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for an infusion of an experimental drug that's keeping his disease at bay -- and without any side effects. Billy, of Coraopolis, is one of a dozen Duchenne patients who are receiving eteplirsen as part of a clinical trial. The drug was expected only to slow the progression of the disease, but Billy and others in the trial are finding their symptoms are improving. Testing confirms that … Continue reading
