At a press conference in Manila on Monday, March 17, Professional Regulation Commission chairperson Teresita Manzala said the PRC endorsement documents allegedly submitted by the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM) to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) were fabricated and have her tampered signature. The SEC previously revoked the corporate registration of the PSSCM. Danny Pata In a statement, Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) chair Teresita Manzala said she has asked the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine (PRBOM) to initiate, investigate and file charges against doctors Leo Olarte, Bu Castro, Rey Melchor Santos, Oscar Tinio and Jose Asa Sabili before the PRCs legal division. Olarte is the current president of the PMA. The five doctors are all incorporators of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM,) which was able to obtain an SEC certificate despite previously being denied corporate registration. They were able to do this, said the statement, by submitting false PRC endorsements to the commission. The PRBOM eventually got hold of a copy of the SEC Registration. On examination of the supposed PRC Endorsement, it was noted that the reference regulatory law used was the Philippine Veterinary Law … Continue reading

Flying high to achieve his dreams

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2014

Topics: blaise wyatt, cerebral palsy BLAISE Wyatt turns five next month, just days before he embarks on his fifth round of intensive therapy in the United States. The Silkstone youngster, who was diagnosed with spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy at 10 months, will undergo 180 hours of treatment over six weeks at Michigan Paediatric Fitness Centre. The therapy costs $40,000 including flights and accommodation for the Wyatt family, but has helped Blaise achieve milestones such as sitting upright. Most recently he has learned to cuddle - a gesture which has brought much joy to his parents Dawn and Cameron. "When he was diagnosed we were given a gut-wrenching outline of how life with this condition would be. He would never walk, never talk, never sit, be tube-fed through his belly, develop epilepsy and have a short life expectancy," Mrs Wyatt said. "We decided to ignore all the challenges and simply help him grasp every opportunity there is." Blaise received his first bout of TheraSuit therapy - a process requiring him to wear a special orthotic suit and offered only in the US and Europe - in 2012. "He's not too far off being able to stand up, which means he will … Continue reading

Upper Southampton board places restrictions on proposed trauma facility

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2014

By Greg Vellner 21st Century Media News Service Officials said the township zoning board must impose six conditions if it grants any approval for construction of the two-story, 16,000-square-foot facility on the south side of Street Road, east of the Southampton Post Office. The center, on a 6.5-acre tract zoned Residential-2, also is to include five 4,200-square-foot single-story buildings to house a maximum total of 40 patients ages 18 and older. The township wants the conditions to be imposed by the zoning hearing board in the event that the zoning hearing board grants the special exception or approval of an unspecified use, states the motion approved unanimously by the supervisors. The plan, by Delaware Valley Residential Care of Chalfont, has raised the ire of some homeowners because, they said in public hearings, it will negatively affect real estate values and because patients potentially pose a threat to nearby residents. A public hearing on the plan continues March 19 before the zoning board. The conditions sought by township supervisors include: DVRC must establish property along the rear of the proposed center as open space in perpetuity; a fence 6 to 8 feet in height must be installed along the front, both … Continue reading

Vail Daily column: Protect your noggin

March is Brain Awareness Month. With summer sports just around the corner, I thought that it would be a very appropriate time to ask the doctors of High Mountain Brain and Spine to educate us on concussions. Drs. Feler and Miller spoke at the Eagle County Senior Expo this past year and educated the audience on brain and spinal issues. We are fortunate to have these amazing resources with our valley, considering the active outdoor lifestyles we live. Its not really a fashion statement, but it can absolutely add that final touch to an outfit as well as save your life. A helmet is one of the most important things you can put on before playing in the snow, on the river, in the dirt or climbing over rocks. While helmets may not always prevent serious head injury, they do a great job limiting the severity of injury to our most important body part our brain. Yet despite an increase in helmet use, doctors are seeing an increase in the number of concussions within their clinics, especially in active individuals and athletes. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury; its defined as an alteration of consciousness as a result of … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2014

Hundreds came out to Heritage Park Saturday morning to support loved ones diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and raise money for a cure by participating in the Cullman MS Walk. The event brought out those who suffer from the disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. It also brought out friends and family members who walked in honor of mothers, wives, sisters, aunts and other friends and relatives. Cullman resident Lori Harris, who was diagnosed with MS seven years ago, has participated in such MS walks in the past. On Saturday, she was surrounded by family who were walking along with her in support. My two nieces, my boyfriend, my mother and brother are all here with me today, said Harris. Harris is a patient of Cullman neurologist Dr. Christopher LaGanke who specializes in treatment for those suffering with MS. LaGanke has been a major force in raising money for the National MS Society and pursuing medical trials to find a cure. He started the Joanne P. LaGanke MS Center to better help his patients. Biogen, Atlas Venture latest effort to develop treatment for ataxia

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2014

A biotech startup formed by Atlas Venture is collaborating with Biogen Idec to develop a treatment for inherited forms of Ataxia a degenerative neurological condition that leads to physical disabilities, according to a company statement. They include the loss of coordination of hands, fingers, arms, legs but it can also cause a curvature of the spine and heart problems such as arrhythmias. Ataxion has raised $17 million in a Series A round to develop treatments for inherited versions of the disease from Atlas Venture and Biogen. Friedreichs ataxia is the most common version of the orphan disease, which affects under 200,000 people. The condition, which tends to show symptoms in adolescence, has no known cure and has been the subject of increasing attention from the life sciences industry and research institutions. It reflects a broader life sciences industry trend of developing treatments for orphan diseases because theres a higher barrier to entry and it allows companies to keep exclusivity for longer periods of time than conditions with larger patient populations. Atlas Venture formed Ataxion last year when it licensed the technology from Danish biotech company Aniona, since renamed Saniona.
