Support builds behind cannabis-derived seizure treatment

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2014

Marijuana legalization may be a long time coming to a number of states if it all but a cannabis-derived oil is getting a lot of support in state legislatures for treatment of severe cases of juvenile epilepsy. Too many North Carolina families are in Colorado right now getting this (cannabidiol) oil and splitting their families up, because they have to become residents there, and its just a mess right now for them, said state Rep. Pat McElraft, R-Carteret, who is developing a bill to legalize medicinal use of cannabidiol, or CBD, oil. McElraft represents part of Jones County. And, these little children are suffering from these multiple seizures, and theyre life threatening when they start having so many of them, she said. In Utah, the chief of the University of Utahs Division of Pediatric Neurology wrote a letter of support of the treatment to the states Controlled Substances Advisory Committee in November. The substance is not psychoactive or hallucinogenic, it contains less THC than do other materials that can be legally purchased in Utah, and it has absolutely no abuse potential, Dr. Francis Filloux wrote, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Stroke treatment: timing is everything

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2014

Doctors say its common knowledge that stroke patients need clot-busting medications quickly to have the best chance of a full recovery. Now, researchers in Australia say speeding up treatment by just one minute equals almost another two days of healthy life. Researchers say that for every 15-minute delay in treatment, stroke survivors may lose about a month of their full ability.
