Stroke Survivors May Lose Month Of Healthy Life For Every 15-Minute Delay In Treatment

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2014

American Heart Association Every 15-minute delay in delivering a clot-busting drug after stroke robs survivors of about a month of disability-free life, according to a new study in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. On the other hand, speeding treatment by just one minute means another 1.8 days of healthy life, researchers said. Save a minute; save a day is the message from our study, which examined how even small reductions in treatment delays might benefit patients measurably in the long run, said Atte Meretoja, M.D., Ph.D., M.Sc., lead author of the study and associate professor of neurology at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The clot-busting drug tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to treat ischemic stroke, should be given within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. However, the sooner its given, the better the outcome. Clot-busting treatment works equally well, irrespective of race, ethnicity or gender, Meretoja said. Speedy restoration of blood flow to the brain is crucial for brain cell survival everywhere. The worlds fastest stroke services in Helsinki, Finland and Melbourne, Australia, take an average 20 minutes from hospital arrival to start of treatment, he said. Most American, Australian and European centers take 70-80 minutes. In this study, we … Continue reading

Each 15-minute delay steals 1 month of healthy life for stroke sufferers

Current ratings for: Each 15-minute delay steals 1 month of healthy life for stroke sufferers Public / Patient: 0 0 ratings Health Professionals: 5 1 rating When it comes to getting treatment for stroke, every minute counts. This is the conclusion of a study published in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke, which shows that for every minute treatment is accelerated, the patient gains another 1.8 days of healthy life. Stroke is the number four cause of death in the US. A disease affecting the arteries leading to the brain, it occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot or bursts. When this happens, part of the brain is unable to get the blood and oxygen it needs, prompting brain cells to die. This is why immediate treatment is so vital; restoring oxygen to the brain as quickly as possible means less damage is done. The researchers from this latest study, led by Dr. Atte Meretoia of the University of Melbourne in Australia, say that though they found all stroke patients benefit from faster treatment following a stroke, younger patients gain even more benefit than older patients. They note that tissue … Continue reading

New Mexico startup looks to bring to market a drug to stop brain injury during stroke

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2014

One of the most challenging things about the gold standard for stroke treatment, the drug tPA, is that to most effectively prevent long-term brain damage, it has to be given within three hours of stroke onset. A New Mexico drug startup called Zocere isnt trying to replace tPA, but rather to act as a protector to neurons in the brain during stroke. We see an opportunity for a vial of our product to sit on an ambulance or in an emergency room to protect the neurons until treatment can be given, said Wayne Laslie, president and CEO of Zocere. Between 80 and 90 percent of strokes are caused by blood clots that interrupt blood flow to the brain. tPA, the only FDA-approved drug for stroke, dissolves that clot and restores blood flow to the brain. But its used cautiously by medical professionals, as breaking down clots can cause damaging bleeding into the brain. Zoceres goal is to protect neurons from both potential sources of injury from oxygen and glucose deprivation caused by the clot and from rapid reperfusion when that clot breaks up. The injectable drug its developing is a derivative of a naturally occurring enzyme in the brain called … Continue reading
