Published: Wednesday, March 12, 2014, 9:00p.m. Updated 5 hours ago Individualized treatments tailored to patients' particular genetic makeups is the future of health care. That's what personalized medicine means. Extraordinary advances in biopharmaceutical research will result in a doubling of the market for personalized medicines by 2019, to more than $18 billion. Nearly half the prescription compounds currently in development are individualized therapies. Targeted treatments save lives, minimize side effects, prevent illnesses and more effectively and efficiently restore health to the sick. But these exciting developments are threatened by recent policy efforts to contain short-term health care costs that sacrifice long-term individual patient outcomes. Researchers understand the potential of personalized medicine. A recent report from the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development found that 94 percent of biopharmaceutical companies are developing personalized medicines. Between 2006 and 2010, their investments in this area increased by 75 percent. Today, cutting-edge treatments are helping patients fight cancer, diabetes and heart ailments. Scientists have discovered the genetic links behind more than 50 hereditary cancer syndromes. For America's 1.2 million HIV/AIDS patients, new capabilities allow doctors to customize drug cocktails based on the patient's biological characteristics, eliminating many side effects and greatly improving … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) March 12, 2014 The top Las Vegas pain management centers, Nevada Pain, are now offering regenerative medicine treatments including stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma therapy. These treatments offer significant potential for repairing injured soft tissues and arthritis. Call (702) 323-0553 for more information and scheduling. Traditional pain management treatments typically work exceptionally well, however, they act as a proverbial "band aid" to mask pain. Regenerative medicine, on the other hand, may regenerate damaged tissue while providing exceptional pain relief. Treatments are offered by the Board Certified, Award Winning Las Vegas pain management doctors at Nevada Pain. Platelet rich plasma therapy is one of the treatments offered, which involves a simple blood draw from the patient. The blood is spun rapidly to create a mixture of concentrated platelets and growth factors, which is then injected into the problem area. Stem cell injections involve treatments with either bone marrow, fat derived or amniotic derived material. The injections are offered as an outpatient and involve very little risk. Each treatment provides a significant concentration of growth factors and stem cells to help with repair. In addition to regenerative medicine options, Nevada Pain offers over 50 pain management … Continue reading

DaSilva Institute of Anti-Aging, Regenerative & Functional Medicine Offers Autologous Stem Cell Therapy for Men …

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) March 12, 2014 Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the most commonly studied disorder when it comes to male sexual dysfunction. It is estimated that 18 million men in the US alone suffer from erectile dysfunction and that it appears to be affecting 1 in 4 males under age 40 according to a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine. While the emphasis of treatments for ED focuses on relieving the symptoms, they only provide a temporary solution rather than a cure or reversing the cause. The DaSilva Institute is excited to announce the recruitment of males suffering from ED, in an IRB study, which will look at the safety, and efficacy of autologous, adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) in regenerating the causes of ED. The evidence shows that ADSCs reverses the pathophysiological changes leading to ED, rather than treating the symptoms of ED. Not only is the data in the literature compelling, but our own, in-house, results on our patients have been phenomenal, states Dr. DaSilva. The many underlying causes for ED that are being investigated range from those secondary to aging, to injury of the cavernous nerve secondary to injury, surgery and/or radiation of the prostate, … Continue reading

A growing corpus of studies have highlighted two important aspects of MSC therapy: (1) MSCs can modulate T-cell mediated immunological responses, and (2) systemically administered MSCs home to sites of ischemia or injury. In this review, we describe the known mechanisms of immunomodulation and homing of MSCs. First, we examine the low immunogenicity of MSCs and their antigen presentation capabilities. Next, we discuss the paracrine interactions between MSCs and innate (dendritic cells (DC)) and adaptive immune … Continue reading

Auckland scientists discover new stem cell in human skin

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2014

Auckland scientists have discovered new cells with stem cell properties in human skin, opening the door to a range of new treatments for skin diseases and unhealed wounds. Auckland scientists have discovered new cells with stem cell properties in human skin, opening the door to a range of new treatments for skin diseases and unhealed wounds. The scientists, Professor Rod Dunbar, Dr Vaughan Feisst, Dr Anna Brooks and Jenni Chen, are members of the Maurice Wilkins Centre for Molecular Biodiscovery, and the research was carried out in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland. They identified mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) in the dermis, the middle layer of skin, and discovered that these could turn themselves into fat cells. This signals that they can probably become other types of cells that repair and regenerate tissue, like similar stem cells found in fat and bone marrow. "Nobody has identified these cells before, so this opens the door to advances in both skin healing and skin diseases," says Professor Dunbar. "Every time you find new cells with stem cell-like properties, you know youre onto something that could have major implications." "Its a really exciting discovery," he adds. "We try to … Continue reading

In October 2011, the Rehabilitation Medicine Center became the first east-coast clinic licensed and trained to perform the Regenexx Family of Regenerative Medicine Procedures. These advanced stem cell and blood platelet procedures provide non-surgical treatment options for those suffering from joint or bone pain, torn or strained tendons and ligaments, or other common injuries and degenerative conditions. Regenexx procedures offer a viable alternative for patients with chronic pain and who may be considering surgery. Stem Cells are in all of us and they are responsible for healing injured bone, ligaments, tendons and tissues. As we get older or injured, we sometimes cannot get enough of these cells into the area in need. The Regenexx Procedures help solve that problem by precisely delivering a high concentration of stem cells into the injured area and aiding your bodys ability to heal naturally. Patients experience very little down time and they typically avoid the long, painful rehabilitation periods that often follow surgery to restore joint strength and mobility.Procedures are performed in our New Jersey office, but evaluations can take place in our New York City or New Jersey clinics. To determine if youre a candidate for these procedures, please complete our Candidate Form. Project heART for Healing: Art Psychosocial Intervention for Children with Autism

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2014

A project in business and science is typically defined as a collaborative enterprise, frequently involving research or design, that is carefully planned to achieve a particular aim. Projects can be further defined as temporary rather than permanent social systems that are constituted by teams within or across organizations to accomplish particular tasks under time constraints. The word project comes from the Latin word projectum from the Latin verb proicere, "to throw something forward" which in turn comes from pro-, which denotes something that precedes the action of the next part of the word in time (paralleling the Greek ) and iacere, "to throw". The word "project" thus actually originally meant "something that comes before anything else happens". When the English language initially adopted the word, it referred to a plan of something, not to the act of actually carrying this plan out. Something performed in accordance with a project became known as an "object". At school, educational institute and independent work than is involved in a normal essay assignment. It requires students to undertake their own fact-finding and analysis, either from library/internet research or from gathering data empirically. The written report that comes from the project is usually in the … Continue reading
