Billionaire says he's reversed the aging process

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

A Finnish-Canadian billionaire says scientists have found a way to make him younger. Fashion designer Peter Nygard claims he is getting more stem cell treatment than anyone else is currently receiving, and scientists have found "my markers have shown exactly that I have been actually reversing my aging and getting younger," the BBC reports. The 70-year-old says he has been undergoing stem cell treatment for four years, and that the University of Miami is currently studying him. Nygard lives in the Bahamas, where he is an advocate for stem cell research and wants to open a $50 million stem cell clinic. He says his interest in the subject is about more than just a desire to be younger. "I started stem cells when I wanted to find a cure for my mother who I loved very much and Western medicine was not able to cure her, he tells the Freeport News. "If I had discovered stem cells a year before, I think that she would still be here with me." The Winnipeg Free Press notes that Nygard has released a 10-minute YouTube video ("Bahamas Stem Cell Laws: The Peter Nygard Breakthrough") that shows him "dancing with young women in a … Continue reading

Mandate for insurance coverage of autism treatment passes Senate

Insurance companies would have to cover autism spectrum disorder under a bill that passed the Utah Senate on Friday. Scott G Winterton, Deseret News Enlarge photo SALT LAKE CITY Insurance companies would have to cover autism spectrum disorder under a bill that passed the Utah Senate on Friday. SB57 requires health benefit plans to cover up to $36,000 annually for a child with autism who is younger than 9 years old and up to $18,000 for children ages 9 to 18 for treatment of the condition. "We know this is a real disease. We know there is a cure. We're simply asking for insurance coverage," said Sen. Brian Shiozawa, R-Cottonwood Heights, the bill's sponsor. Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, said he knows of a young boy who was treated for a broken arm but the insurance company denied coverage because of his autism. "That is discrimination. If that's how insurance companies act in my district, it's going to change how I feel about insurance mandates," he said. Sen. Allen Christensen, R-North Ogden, was among those who opposed the bill, which passed 17-7. He said he couldn't support a mandate when there isn't money to pay for it. "I want to … Continue reading

Fewer mutations needed for autism in boys than girls

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

More genetic mutations may be needed to give rise to autism in girls than in boys. The finding supports the notion that the female brain is somehow protected against autism, and this may in turn explain why four times as many males have autism than females. Although some cases of autism are associated with one mutation, most are thought to involve several genetic abnormalities. In the past few years, hundreds of mutations have been discovered that can make people more vulnerable to the condition. To see if the mutations affect men and women differently, Sbastien Jacquemont at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland and colleagues measured the frequency of two different kinds of mutation in 762 families that had a child with autism. Among the children with autism, one class of mutation known as a copy number variation deletions or duplications of a large chunk of genetic material was three times more common in girls than in boys. The team also found that substitutions of a single letter of DNA were about one-third more common in affected girls. Jacquemont says this suggests it takes more mutations for autism to arise in girls than in boys. "Females function a lot … Continue reading

One-Third of Young Stroke Victims Remain Disabled Years After: Study

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

Posted: Thursday, February 27, 2014, 4:00 PM THURSDAY, Feb. 27, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- One-third of people who suffer strokes before the age of 50 will have trouble dealing with the challenges of daily life even several years later, a new study finds. The finding suggests that younger age provides only limited protection against the devastation of a stroke. While strokes are much rarer in younger people, 10 percent of all strokes occur from age 18 to 50, the study authors noted. Dr. Steven Levine, an attending neurologist at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York City, agreed. "Stroke in young people is more common than most people realize," he said. "Approximately 15 percent of all strokes due to blocked arteries [called ischemic strokes] occur in young adults and adolescents." Levine, who was not involved in the new study, added that stroke can often have a devastating effect on the lives of younger patients. "Compared to stroke in older people, stroke in the young has significant economic impact by leaving victims disabled prior to their most productive years," he pointed out. The new Dutch study was led by Frank-Erik de Leeuw, associate professor of neurology at the Radboud University Nijmegen … Continue reading

Parents win battle to get justice for their 'little miracle'

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

The parents of a child left with permanent brain damage when doctors at a Guildford hospital delayed his birth for more than two hours have described the day they thought they would lose their miracle son. Helen and Roger Leysters three-year-old son Julian suffers from cerebral palsy due to his brain being starved of oxygen when a consultant at the Royal Surrey County Hospital delayed sending Mrs Leyster for a caesarean by more than two hours. The couple instructed medical law experts to look into the fraught pregnancy on March 24, 2010, which Julian was lucky to survive, and have secured admission of liability from the NHS Foundation Trust, in which it confirmed that the delay caused his brain damage. Now the family, living in Surbiton but originally from Claygate, will receive financial support in a settlement to fund Julians care, rehabilitation and equipment needs for the rest of his life. Mr Leyster said: You would expect us to be jumping for joy when we got the news, but its a strange mixed feeling. You realise that this couldve been avoided and things would have been completely different for Julian. Speaking to the Get Surrey, Mrs Leyster, 42, explained how … Continue reading
