ABC Response to NSAC elimination of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

By Tim Lueckenhoff/President, Association of Boxing Commissions In July 2011, the ABCs medical committee, formed under my tenure, published a Handbook of Ringside Medicine. This handbook established guidelines for dealing with TRT and TUEs. At this 2011 annual convention, this publication was distributed to the attending members. In addition, a very detailed presentation was provided by the ABC Medical Chair Dr. Sherry Wulkan on the issue of TRT TUEs in both 2011 and 2012. Since 2011, the ABC medical committee has suggested that its members follow its TUE protocols recommended by the ABC medical committee and modeled upon international Olympic standards. At this point, the ABC will continue to recommend its members follow these extremely tough therapeutic use exemption standards. These standards, in place since 2011, would allow TUEs for TRT in only the rarest of cases to a very select group of contestants who have a specified legitimate medical need. I note that the Olympics has seen fit to grant a TRT TUE for more than one individual, including for an individual who lost his testicles in an accident. Our current policy would allow a TUE in that instance. However, I will ask the medical committee to consider and … Continue reading

NSAC votes unanimously to ban testosterone-replacement therapy, effective immediately

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

In a stunning reversal of policy, the Nevada State Athletic Commission today voted unanimously to ban therapeutic-use exemptions for testosterone-replacement therapy. Moving forward, all fighters who wish to receive permission to undergo hormone replacement will not be allowed to apply for the exemption, and previous applicants will not be allowed another one. NSAC commissioner Raymond Skip Avansino proposed the ban and said the commission does not have the resources to effectively monitor exemptions. NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar added the commissions previous exemption process took up too many resources for too little payoff. Commissioners Avansino and Pat Lundvall also ventured that the NSAC is under no obligation to honor exemptions issued by other states. The UFC on Thursday released an official statement supporting the ban not long after the NSAC made its ruling. The Ultimate Fighting Championship fully supports the decision made today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission regarding the immediate termination of therapeutic use exemptions (TUE) for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), the statement read. We believe our athletes should compete based on their natural abilities and on an even playing field. We also intend to honor this ruling in international markets where, due to a lack of governing bodies, … Continue reading

Billionaire says he's reversed the aging process

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

A Finnish-Canadian billionaire says scientists have found a way to make him younger. Fashion designer Peter Nygard claims he is getting more stem cell treatment than anyone else is currently receiving, and scientists have found "my markers have shown exactly that I have been actually reversing my aging and getting younger," the BBC reports. The 70-year-old says he has been undergoing stem cell treatment for four years, and that the University of Miami is currently studying him. Nygard lives in the Bahamas, where he is an advocate for stem cell research and wants to open a $50 million stem cell clinic. He says his interest in the subject is about more than just a desire to be younger. "I started stem cells when I wanted to find a cure for my mother who I loved very much and Western medicine was not able to cure her, he tells the Freeport News. "If I had discovered stem cells a year before, I think that she would still be here with me." The Winnipeg Free Press notes that Nygard has released a 10-minute YouTube video ("Bahamas Stem Cell Laws: The Peter Nygard Breakthrough") that shows him "dancing with young women in a … Continue reading

Cushing's syndrome: Genetic basis for cortisol excess

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

An international team of researchers led by an endocrinologist at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich has identified genetic mutations that result in uncontrolled synthesis and secretion of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal gland in response to stressful events, and modulates a whole spectrum of physiological processes. An international research collaboration has now identified genetic mutations that lead to the production and secretion of cortisol in the absence of an underlying stressor. The discovery emerged from the genetic characterization of benign tumors of the adrenal gland which produce cortisol in excess amounts. Patients who develop such tumors suffer from weight gain, muscle wasting, osteoporosis, diabetes and hypertension. This condition, known as Cushing's syndrome, can be successfully treated by surgical removal of the affected adrenal gland. Overproduction of cortisol The team, which included researchers from Germany, France and the US and was led by Professors Felix Beuschlein and Martin Fassnacht of the LMU Medical Center, were able to show that in one-third of a patient population with such adrenal tumors, a mutation in the gene for the enzyme phosphokinase A was specifically associated with the continuous production of cortisol. This mutation had occurred in … Continue reading

Molecular 'cocktail' transforms skin cells into beating heart cells

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

The power of regenerative medicine appears to have turned science fiction into scientific reality-by allowing scientists to transform skin cells into cells that closely resemble beating heart cells. However, the methods required are complex, and the transformation is often incomplete. But now, scientists at the Gladstone Institutes have devised a new method that allows for the more efficient-and, importantly, more complete-reprogramming of skin cells into cells that are virtually indistinguishable from heart muscle cells. These findings, based on animal models and described in the latest issue of Cell Reports, offer newfound optimism in the hunt for a way to regenerate muscle lost in a heart attack. Heart disease is the world's leading cause of death, but recent advances in science and medicine have improved the chances of surviving a heart attack. In the United States alone, nearly 1 million people have survived an attack, but are living with heart failure-a chronic condition in which the heart, having lost muscle during the attack, does not beat at full capacity. So, scientists have begun to look toward cellular reprogramming as a way to regenerate this damaged heart muscle. The reprogramming of skin cells into heart cells, an approach pioneered by Gladstone Investigator, … Continue reading

Purification, culture and multi-lineage differentiation of zebrafish neural crest cells

Posted: Published on February 28th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Feb-2014 Contact: Eric C. Liao cliao@partners.org Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine Researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH)/Harvard Medical School, Drs. Beste Kinikoglu and Yawei Kong, led by Dr. Eric C. Liao, cultured and characterized for the first time multipotent neural crest cells isolated from zebrafish embryos. This important study is reported in the February 2014 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine. Neural crest is a unique cell population induced at the lateral border of the neural plate during embryogenesis and vertebrate development depends on these multipotent migratory cells. Defects in neural crest development result in a wide range of malformations, such as cleft lip and palate, and diseases, such as melanoma. Dr. Liao's laboratory uses zebrafish as a model vertebrate to study the genetic basis of neural crest related craniofacial malformations. Zebrafish has long been used to study early development and recently emerged as a model to study disease. "Development of in vitro culture of neural crest cells and reproducible functional assays will provide a valuable and complementary approach to the in vivo experiments in zebrafish" said Dr. Eric C. Liao, senior author of the study and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at MGH, and … Continue reading
