2013: The year of the butt?

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

By Dr. Anthony Youn, CNN contributor updated 7:29 AM EST, Thu February 27, 2014 Kim Kardashian's booty may inspire patients to seek buttock enhancement surgery. STORY HIGHLIGHTS Editor's note: Dr. Anthony Youn is a plastic surgeon in metro Detroit. He is the author of "In Stitches," a humorous memoir about growing up Asian-American and becoming a doctor. (CNN) -- Last year was the Year of the Butt. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there was a 58% increase in buttock enhancement surgery in 2013 compared to the year before. This operation had the largest gains of all cosmetic procedures for the year. So why are so many Americans undergoing surgery to enhance their derrieres? I believe the answer lies with the media, both broadcast and social. Plastic surgeons are seeing more and more women who want the backsides of various stars. While I don't hear Jennifer Lopez's name much anymore, other stars with ample behinds have taken her place. Ratings for her reality show may be declining, but Kim Kardashian is still the poster child for a large and shapely backside. In fact, a recent butt selfie (also known as a "belfie") on Instagram went viral with … Continue reading

FDA considering 3-parent embryos

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

By Matt Smith, CNN updated 7:06 PM EST, Thu February 27, 2014 STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- A promising way to stop a deadly disease, or an uncomfortable step toward what one leading ethicist called eugenics? U.S. health officials are weighing whether to approve trials of a pioneering in vitro fertilization technique using DNA from three people in an attempt to prevent illnesses like muscular dystrophy and respiratory problems. The proposed treatment would allow a woman to have a baby without passing on diseases of the mitochondria, the "powerhouses" that drive cells. The procedure is "not without its risks, but it's treating a disease," medical ethicist Art Caplan told CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday. Preventing a disease that can be passed down for generations would be ethical "as long as it proves to be safe," he said. "These little embryos, these are people born with a disease, they can't make power. You're giving them a new battery. That's a therapy. I think that's a humane ethical thing to do," said Caplan, the director of medical ethics at New York University's Langone Medical Center. "Where we get into the sticky part is, what if you get past transplanting batteries and start to … Continue reading

Scientists Question Safety Of Genetically Altering Human Eggs

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

hide captionUp till now, all babies have had two genetic parents. That could soon change. A panel of government advisers has expressed serious concerns about a controversial proposal to allow scientists to try to make babies using eggs that have been genetically altered to include DNA from another woman. Members of the Food and Drug Administration panel said they were worried that not enough research has been done to know whether the experiments would be safe. "I think there was a sense of the committee that at this particular point in time, there was probably not enough data either in animals or in vitro to conclusively move on to human trials ... without answering a few additional questions," said Dr. Evan Snyder of the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., chairman of the 25-member committee that met Tuesday and Wednesday. Unlike most FDA advisory panels, this group did not take a vote on whether the agency should let the experiments proceed. A similar proposal is pending in Britain. During the hearing, the panel heard from researchers at the New York Stem Cell Foundation, the Oregon Health & Science University and Newcastle University in England who have conducted preliminary … Continue reading
