Opexa Therapeutics Reports Year End 2013 Financial Results and Provides Corporate Update

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

2013 and recent highlights include: 2013 was a strong year for Opexa as we executed on several critical strategic goals for the company. We secured a partnering agreement with Merck Serono, a large pharmaceutical company with a deep understanding of Multiple Sclerosis, advanced on the landmark Abili-T study in Secondary Progressive MS patients and ended the year in a strong financial position, commented Neil K. Warma, President and Chief Executive Officer of Opexa. In 2014, we look forward to completing enrollment in the Abili-T study, which is expected to occur in the second quarter of this year, and exploring other potential disease areas through the utilization of our Precision ImmunotherapyTM platform. The focus of the Company remains fixed on the execution of the Phase IIb study in Secondary Progressive MS patients. Currently, the treatment options for these patients are very limited, so the importance of bringing a safe and effective therapy to market is heightened. If we are successful with the development of Tcelna in the ongoing SPMS trial and Merck Serono exercises its option, Merck Serono would bear the expense of subsequent clinical development of Tcelna in MS. In addition, we believe Opexa would be solidly positioned with the … Continue reading

UFC to follow Nevada athletic commission's new ban on TRT

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously to ban the use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), on Thursday. TRT is a hormone treatment, usually in the form of an injection or cream, used to offset the symptoms of hypogonadism (which in men includes fatigue, erectile dysfunction, declining muscle mass, etc.). However, one of the chief causes of hypogonadism is prior steroid use. In the past, fighters such as Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson, Frank Mir and Forest Griffin, have been granted therapy use exemption (TUE) by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Those are now off the table, with the commission no longer recognizing TUEs, including those issued outside of Nevada. Vitor Belfort, who has received TRT exemptions in the past (he also tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2006), is one of the first fighters affected, as he challenges Chris Weidman for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 173 in Las Vegas. A recent episode of Outside the Lines highlighted the fact that MMA fighters had a much higher rate of receiving TUEs than athletes in other sports. Of the 1,800+ fighters signed with UFC and Bellator, 11 of them had TUEs. The International Olympic Committee did not issue a single … Continue reading

Oklahoma House approves embryonic stem cell ban

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Conducting certain types of embryonic stem cell research in Oklahoma would be a felony punishable by at least a year in prison under a bill that the Oklahoma House overwhelmingly approved on Tuesday. The House voted 73-14 for the Protection of Human Life Act of 2013, despite concerns it sends the wrong message to the nations research community. The bill, which now heads to the Senate, prohibits nontherapeutic research that destroys a fertilized human egg, although the measure specifically exempts embryo transfers connected to in vitro fertilization. For me, and I believe for the majority of Oklahomans, the real question is about life, said Rep. Dan Fisher, R-El Reno, a minister who wrote the bill. When does life begin? I believe it begins at conception. And anything that is done to knowingly end that life is the ending of human life, and we generally call that murder. But opponents say it sends a message that Oklahoma is not open to taking part in groundbreaking research. Not only are we sending a message that we dont want stem cell research, but that if you even try to do stem cell research in this state, youre going to … Continue reading

Cushing's syndrome: A genetic basis for cortisol excess

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Feb-2014 Contact: Luise Dirscherl presse@lmu.de 49-892-180-2706 Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitt Mnchen An international team of researchers led by an endocrinologist at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich has identified genetic mutations that result in uncontrolled synthesis and secretion of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal gland in response to stressful events, and modulates a whole spectrum of physiological processes. An international research collaboration has now identified genetic mutations that lead to the production and secretion of cortisol in the absence of an underlying stressor. The discovery emerged from the genetic characterization of benign tumors of the adrenal gland which produce cortisol in excess amounts. Patients who develop such tumors suffer from weight gain, muscle wasting, osteoporosis, diabetes and hypertension. This condition, known as Cushing's syndrome, can be successfully treated by surgical removal of the affected adrenal gland. Overproduction of cortisol The team, which included researchers from Germany, France and the US and was led by Professors Felix Beuschlein and Martin Fassnacht of the LMU Medical Center, were able to show that in one-third of a patient population with such adrenal tumors, a mutation in the gene for the enzyme phosphokinase A was specifically associated … Continue reading

Personalized medicine has finally arrived — or has it?

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 26-Feb-2014 Contact: Michael Bernstein m_bernstein@acs.org 202-872-6042 American Chemical Society As the price for decoding a person's DNA keeps dropping, expectations for personalized medicine based on specific genetic profiling rise. But translating an individual's genetic data into finely tailored medical treatments still faces major challenges, explains a new article in Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the weekly magazine of the American Chemical Society. Rick Mullin, senior editor at C&EN, notes that advances in DNA sequencing have allowed researchers to design some therapies, particularly in the cancer realm, for patients with certain genetic traits. As the technology for reading people's genes improves and drops even further in cost, more progress is on the horizon. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the government body responsible for approving pharmaceuticals for commercialization, supports these efforts. With the stars seemingly aligned, some industry experts have declared that the age of personalized medicine has arrived. So why do others claim that victory is still a long way off? The article points out that when pharmaceutical labs launched their search for new drugs based on genomics more than 15 years ago, the focus was almost exclusively on DNA sequences. But now researchers have realized that … Continue reading
