FDA weighs evidence on producing '3-parent' embryos

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

U.S. medical advisers are considering whether there is scientific justification for allowing human studies of a controversial procedure known as "three-parent in vitro fertilization (IVF)," a technique supporters say could prevent horrific genetic defects but that critics believe could lead to designer babies. During two days of public hearings starting on Tuesday, scientists were scheduled to present their research to outside advisers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The agency will decide whether safety concerns raised by three-parent IVF are minimal enough to allow clinical trials to begin. The committee is focusing only on the science, and at the end of Tuesday's hearing some committee members expressed concern that animal research cannot yet show that human studies would be safe for women and any children born via the three-parent technique. Several panelists felt "there was probably not enough data in animals . . . to move on to human trials without answering a few additional questions" about safety, said committee chairman Dr. Evan Snyder of the Sanford/Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, California, in summarizing their views at the end of Tuesday's session. Although the panel has not been asked to consider legal or ethical issues, members of … Continue reading

US FDA weighs evidence on producing 'three-parent' embryos

NEW YORK - U.S. medical advisors are weighing whether there is scientific justification for allowing human studies of a controversial procedure known as "three-parent in vitro fertilization (IVF)," a technique supporters say could prevent horrific genetic defects, but critics believe could lead to designer babies. Over two days of public hearings starting on Tuesday, scientists were scheduled to present their research to outside advisors to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The agency will decide whether safety concerns raised by three-parent IVF are minimal enough to allow clinical trials to begin. The committee is focusing only on the science, not the legal or ethical issues, Celia Witten of the FDA's Office of Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapies said in comments introducing the hearing. That did not stop members of the public from focusing on ethical issues. Speakers warned the panel that use of three-parent IVF "could alter the human species," represented "an unprecedented level of experimentation on non-consenting human subjects" (meaning any children born via the technique), and "could open the door to genetically-modified children" who would be "manufactured products." In the three-parent procedure, one man would donate sperm and all its DNA for in vitro fertilization. The would-be biological … Continue reading

Making Babies with 3 Genetic Parents Gets FDA Hearing

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

A reproductive technology that taps three parents DNA as a way to eliminate hereditary diseases could reach clinical trials if the Food and Drug Administration gives the go-ahead Credit: Thinkstock/iStock Reproductive technologies that marry DNA from three individuals will receive a trial in the court of public opinion this week. Such technologies may hold promise for averting certain genetically inherited diseases passed down via mutations to mitochondria, the cells battery pack. Scientists have already had successes with this type of reproductive approach in monkeys and in human embryos, and are now eager to launch human clinical trials. First, however, they must get the green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which will convene a public hearing before an advisory committee on February 25. The technology, called oocyte modification (but sometimes nicknamed three-parent IVF), involves scooping out potentially mutated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from a womans egg and replacing it with the mtDNA of an unaffected donor woman. The process is designed to prevent the transmission of some debilitating inherited mitochondrial diseases, which can result in vision loss, seizures and other maladies. Such inherited diseases, often unfortunately known by acronyms for complex medical names that include LHON, for Leber's Hereditary … Continue reading

New Autism Definition May Decrease Diagnosis by One Third

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise (NEW YORK, NY, February 26, 2014) New diagnosis guidelines for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) issued by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) may reduce by almost one third the total number of people being diagnosed, according to new research from Columbia University School of Nursing published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. The guidelines, released in May 2013 and the first major update to psychiatric diagnosis criteria in almost two decades, may leave thousands of developmentally delayed children each year without the ASD diagnosis they need to qualify for social services, medical benefits and educational support. A team led by Kristine M. Kulage, MA, MPH, director of the Office of Scholarship and Research Development at Columbia Nursing, conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to determine the effect of changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the APAs classification tool for psychiatric conditions, on diagnosis of individuals with ASD. The study found a statistically significant decrease in ASD diagnosis of 31 percent using the new manual, DSM-5, compared with the number of cases of ASD that would have been identified under the previous version of the manual, … Continue reading

Connolly fan alerted him to possibility he had Parkinson's

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

25/02/2014 - 10:00:33Back to Entertainment Home Billy Connolly realised he was suffering from Parkinson's disease after a fan noticed a problem with the way he walked. The 71-year-old star was spotted by an Australian doctor, who was on tour with a group of dancers in America, and he insisted the comedian showed a "strange gait" which led to Billy being diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disorder. Billy told a US radio station: "It was the strangest thing of all. I was walking through the lobby and every time I had gone through there was a crowd of boys and girls and a couple of adults. It turned out they were dancers from Australia. "The guy who was in charge of them came over to me one day and said 'Billy, I'm a big fan, I'm from Tasmania'. "He said, 'I'm a surgeon and I have been watching you walking, you have a strange gait'. That was the way he put it. "He said 'You're showing distinct signs of early onset Parkinson's disease, see your doctor'. I think it was the way I held myself when I was walking. Then they did blood tests and various other little bits and pieces … Continue reading

Paciocco & Mellow, a Windsor Personal Injury Firm handles many personal injury claims where people have sustained injuries that led them to suffer from chronic pain syndrome. A recent Austrian study published in the journal, Pain, found that vitamin D supplements may be an effective and inexpensive way of reducing chronic pain and fatigue in patients with fibromyalgia. The participants who took the vitamin D supplements noticed a reduction in pain. Vitamin D supplements could be an economical and safe treatment. A new study from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, also published in the journal, Pain, found that chronic neck pain is the most commonly reported symptom after a car accident and that after six weeks after a collision, they reported further pain in other regions of the body. Good reception for Receptos

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2014

Faheem Hasnain, chief executive of La Jolla-based Receptos, with other company members in the lab. For a young biotech company looking to woo investors, it helps to have promising products. Having experienced management helps even more. Receptos, a developer of drugs for autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, has both. That combination helps explain why shares of the La Jolla company have skyrocketed since it held its initial public offering last May at $14 per share. Even in a surging biotech stock market, the performance of Receptos stands out. Receptos closed Tuesday at $46.39, up $1.97, or 4.4 percent, boosting the companys market value above $1 billion. Those who bought at the IPO price have tripled their investment to date. (During the same time, the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index rose about 56 percent.) Moreover, Receptos held a secondary offering in January. It raised $102 million, compared to $73 million from its IPO. Receptos has good use for the additional money, says its chief executive, Faheem Hasnain. In December, the company released positive results in a mid-stage trial of its drug RPC1063 for multiple sclerosis, a progressively debilitating disease of the central nervous system. The results take much of the risk out … Continue reading
