Restoring Strength in Aging Muscles

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2014

A stem cell based method may restore strength to damaged skeletal muscles of the elderly, according to a study done at the University of Toronto and published in a February 2014 issue of the journal Nature Medicine describes. A release from the university notes that skeletal muscles are some of the most important muscles in the body, supporting functions such as sitting, standing, blinking and swallowing. In aging individuals, the function of these muscles significantly decreases. The release quotes Penney Gilbert, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering, as saying, You lose fifteen percent of muscle mass every single year after the age of 75, a trend that is irreversible." Through tracing the signaling pathways of the cells, Gilbert with lead author Professor Helen Blau and postdoctoral researcher Ben Cosgrove determined that during aging, a subpopulation of stem cells begin to express a modification of a protein that inhibits their ability to grow and make new stem cells. "But if we instead treated those cells outside the body with a drug that prevented that protein modification from occurring, in combination with culturing the cells on something soft that is reminiscent of soft skeletal tissue, like a hydrogel … Continue reading

Skin cells transformed into functioning liver cells in mouse study

Posted: Published on February 25th, 2014

The power of regenerative medicine now allows scientists to transform skin cells into cells that closely resemble heart cells, pancreas cells and even neurons. However, a method to generate cells that are fully mature -- a crucial prerequisite for life-saving therapies -- has proven far more difficult. But now, scientists at the Gladstone Institutes and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), have made an important breakthrough: they have discovered a way to transform skin cells into mature, fully functioning liver cells that flourish on their own, even after being transplanted into laboratory animals modified to mimic liver failure. In previous studies on liver-cell reprogramming, scientists had difficulty getting stem cell-derived liver cells to survive once being transplanted into existing liver tissue. But the Gladstone-UCSF team figured out a way to solve this problem. Writing in the latest issue of the journal Nature, researchers in the laboratories of Gladstone Senior Investigator Sheng Ding, PhD, and UCSF Associate Professor Holger Willenbring, MD, PhD, reveal a new cellular reprogramming method that transforms human skin cells into liver cells that are virtually indistinguishable from the cells that make up native liver tissue. These results offer new hope for the millions of people suffering … Continue reading

Medicaid waiver for autism treatment gets nod from Senate committee

A Senate committee voted unanimously to renew a two-year pilot program that provides treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder. Shutterstock Enlarge photo SALT LAKE CITY A Senate committee voted unanimously Monday to renew a two-year pilot program that provides treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder. If the bill ultimately passes, HB88 would allow for autism services to be provided through a Medicaid waiver program and a public employees health plan. The program previously included an autism treatment account, but funding for the account ends in June. The Medicaid waiver covers about $29,000 a year of applied behavior analysis therapy for children ages 26. It also covers 10-15 hours of in-home therapy and up to three hours of respite for the family each week. Without renewal by the legislation, the pilot program will last through June. During the first year and a half of the pilot program, therapy enrollment increased and about 300 children received treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 47 individuals in Utah are on the autism spectrum the highest rate in the United States. Bill sponsor Rep. Ronda Menlove, R-Garland, said she anticipates a renewal of the Medicaid waiver would … Continue reading

Spinal cord injuries rise among those 65 and older …

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

By the numbers Here's a look at spinal cord injuries by the numbers. 87.7: The number of traumatic spinal cord injuries per million Americans age 65 or older in 2009. That's an increase over the 2007 rate of 79.4 incidents per million. 49.9: The number of traumatic spinal cord injuries per million Americans ages 18-64 in 2009. This is a decrease from the 2007 rate of 52.3 incidents per million. 41.5: The percentage of traumatic spinal cord injuries from 2007 to 2009 that were caused by falls. Motor vehicle accidents were next, causing 35.5 percent of spinal injuries. $1.6 billion: The estimated total cost of emergency room treatment to all patients with traumatic spinal cord injury from 2007 to 2009, the Johns Hopkins researchers reported. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center said individual costs of care and rehabilitation can range from $1 million to $5 million over a patient's lifetime, depending on the person's age and injury. The number of serious spinal cord injuries in the United States is rising, and it's not for the reason you may think. Falls, especially among older Americans, now surpass car accidents as the leading cause of spinal cord injuries, according to new … Continue reading

Canyon family one of thousands relocating for marijuana treatment

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

AMARILLO, TX- For the Harmons, their country Canyon farm-house has always been home. Memories of past Christmases, birthdays, and first's for their three children are all here. But not all the memories are warm ones. Eight-year-old Jillian Harmon was just an infant when she had her first seizure. "When she was an infant she was having 40 to 50 a day," Jillian's mother Becca said. Now Jillian averages one seizure a day after getting off all pharmaceutical drugs and turning to alternative treatments of various vitamins, minerals, and oxygen. Jillian has severe epilepsy, cerebral palsy, hip displasia and developmental delays. Becca says her daughter will never be "normal," but hope has the Harmons packing their life in boxes and heading to the mountains. "It's a big move, it's hard to move away from family and friends, and his career, and it's really hard, but she's worth it," Becca said. Jillian will soon start on a treatment made from marijuana, grown at a remote, high security facility in the foothills of Colorado Springs. "Thinking that Jilly could be seizure free, maybe someday be able to communicate somehow or feed herself, little things like that," Becca said. See the article here: Canyon … Continue reading

Laser Safely Destroys Deep Brain Tumor, CA First

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Using a novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided laser technology, neurosurgeons at UC San Diego Health System have successfully treated a malignant tumor deep inside a patients brain. This is the first time that this FDA-approved laser-based treatment has been performed in California. The patients brain tumor was located in the thalamus. Normally, to access a tumor in this region, the surgeon would have to remove considerable healthy brain tissue, thus subjecting the patient to significant neurologic injury, said neurosurgeon Clark C. Chen, MD, PhD, vice chairman of research, UC San Diego Division of Neurosurgery. This MRI-guided laser technology helps neurosurgeons preserve healthy brain tissues while allowing treatment of tumors that would otherwise be inoperable. Chen and his team used a technique called laser interstitial thermal therapy. The procedure is performed inside an MRI machine while the patient is under general anesthesia. A dime-size hole is created in the patients skull to access the tumor. A laser probe is then inserted into the tumor under real-time MRI monitoring and computer guidance. When the tumor is reached, the laser beam is activated, heating and destroying tumor cells. It is well-known that MRI can be … Continue reading
