Campaign for One Dose Breast Cancer Treatment Funding

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

Media Release 24th February 2014 Surgeon Campaigns for One Dose, One Time Early Stage Breast Cancer Treatment to be Funded in New Zealand The surgeon who introduced a revolutionary one dose, one time treatment for early-stage breast cancer to New Zealand is campaigning for it to be made available through the public health system. Last year Auckland Breast Surgeon Dr Erica Whineray Kelly and a team of Auckland breast cancer specialists formed their own service, Focus Radiotherapy, to bring the new treatment option, using the Zeiss Intrabeam intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) system, to the Southern Cross Hospital, North Harbour Auckland, but they want to make it available to women across the country through the health service. The Intrabeam intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) system avoids the traditional 36 week course of radiation therapy for 80% of patients and eliminates the need for up to a further 25 visits to hospital for post-operative radiotherapy. This is much more convenient for patients, would save the health service money and could dramatically reduce waiting lists. Dr Erica Whineray Kelly says: `This may be an excellent therapy option for women having breast-conserving surgery. We are the first and only centre in New Zealand offering this revolutionary treatment. … Continue reading

Stem Cell Research – Research!America

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

Americans Support Stem Cell Research Support Oppose Research!America supports federal funding for stem cell research on both adult and embryonic cell lines and works to promote and protect stem cell research at the state and federal levels. We work closely with our partners, the Stem Cell Action Coalition and the Coalition for Advancing Medical Research, to advocate on behalf of stem cell research. Former President George W. Bush permitted federal funding for embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) only if the stem cells were obtained from a limited number of previously existing stem cell lines. In 2009, President Barack Obama issued an executive order expanding the opportunities for federally funded ESCR by permitting the use of embryonic stem cells other than those obtained from the previously designated stem cell lines. However, legislation to protect this expansion in research opportunities has never been signed into law, which gives future administrations the discretion to curtail or eliminate federally funded stem cell research. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) is currently sponsoring H.R. 2376, also known as the Stem Cell Research Advancement Act, which would codify the stem cell rules established under President Obamas executive order, preventing future administrations from unilaterally restricting or eliminating federal funding … Continue reading

Close to 90% of Plastic Surgeons Worry About How Obamacare Will Affect the Specialty

Posted: Published on February 24th, 2014

New York, New York (PRWEB) February 24, 2014 More than 88% of aesthetic doctors are concerned about how the Affordable Care Act will affect the practice of plastic surgery, and up to one-third may retire early as a result of these changes, according to a new online poll conducted by Plastic Surgery Practice. Most respondents were worried that reimbursement rates would be reduced so dramatically that they would have trouble paying their own bills as a result. There was also concern that there would be an influx of nonqualified practitioners providing aesthetic procedures at cut rates to increase their revenue stream, which could compromise patient safety. The new results were released during a Plastic Surgery Practice webinar held on February 24, 2014. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is commonly referred to as Obamacare, health care reform, or the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It was signed into law to reform the health care industry by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010, and was upheld by the US Supreme Court on June 28, 2012. Its rollout has been fraught with hiccups, but several key provisions have already been enacted with more to come through 2022. The intentions of … Continue reading
