Victim's family speaks out one year after cosmetic surgery death

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2014

SAVANNAH, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - One year ago this week, April Jenkins died after having cosmetic surgery at a metro Atlanta med spa. For the first time, Jenkins' father, Hal Jenkins, is talking about that tragic day and wondering why the Georgia Medical Board hasn't taken action against the doctor. "She was the love of our life, she was everything to us," Hal Jenkins said. "It's just very hurtful to even talk about her because I miss her so much." April Jenkins died last February while undergoing liposuction performed by Dr. Nedra Dodds at Opulence Aesthetic Medicine in Kennesaw. "She didn't take care of my sister and that hurts me to this day," April Jenkins' sister, Audrey Jenkins, said. Employees in the operating room during the procedure said April Jenkins complained that it was "tearing and burning." They also told police a rag was placed in April Jenkins' mouth to quiet her. The medical examiner found a perforation in April Jenkins' diaphragm as well as multiple puncture wounds to her liver. "Someone that's supposed to be professional and they let something like this happen to her. I can't understand it," Hal Jenkins said. Even though it's been a year since … Continue reading

Sitting and standing up and getting up and moving, Linda said. The news from her orthopedic surgeon was not encouraging. I was sent off with a prescription, and basically said, take this, and when it gets so bad, well take out your knees. And that was really upsetting to me. It was such an ugly picture that was painted for my future, Linda said. Traditional treatment might involve steroid injections, physical therapy, and joint replacement. But Linda wanted an alternative. When she first heard about using stem cell injections, she was very intrigued. The thought of me healing me with my own self is what sold me on the procedure, Linda said. Go here to read the rest: Stem Cells Being Used To Treat Knee, Joint Pain … Continue reading

CardioCell begins 2 heart stem cell trials

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2014

CardioCell has begun two new clinical trials of its stem cell treatment for recent heart attack patients, the San Diego company said Wednesday. A Phase 3 trial has started in Kazakhstan and a Phase 2a trial in the United States, said privately held CardioCell. The stem cells are grown under low oxygen conditions, similar to the natural environment of stem cells in the body, said cardiologist Stephen Epstein, a scientific advisor. Stem cells grown under higher levels of oxygen common in laboratory environments act differently than those grown in low oxygen levels, which may reduce their regenerative abilities, said Epstein, director of translational and vascular biology research at MedStar Heart Institute in Washington, D.C. Moreover, these cells tolerate ischemia, a reduced blood supply that limits the availability of oxygen and nutrients. Since heart attacks are by definition caused by ischemia, that tolerance should help the cells survive long enough to help, Epstein said. The stem cells appear to help by producing chemicals that stimulate heart regeneration, Epstein said. The stem cells are of a type called mesenchymal, taken from bone marrow. They were produced by Stemedica, another San Diego stem cell company, which spun off CardioCell. More information about the … Continue reading

Autism Drug Studied On Animals Has Potential For Humans

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2014

By Marcus Johnson Bumetanide is a drug approved for the treatment of heart and liver disease. It is now being repurposed to treat autism and researchers are in the first stages of studying the drug. Researchers would like to know if bumetanide can stop or reverse autism in children and theyve started by testing the drug on animals such as mice and rats. Researchers found that bumetanide reversed a faulty birth mechanism that may have led to autism symptoms in offspring. The next step for researchers is to test bumetanide on children. Researchers who have worked on the studies are optimistic. If you administer a diuretic to the mother 24 hours before delivery, the offspring is, so to speak, cured, said Yehezkel Ben-Ari, the study author. What we must do is work in the development and biology earlier so we see, this is insufficient and how we can treat it earlier. While the studys results are positive, it is not yet determined if the drugs effects on animals will be similar in humans. G. Ian Gallicano, a biologist at Georgetown, is skeptical. I think 90 percent of this paper is really earth-shattering, but there's always the caution of, 'is this … Continue reading

Blood pressure medications given right after stroke not beneficial, study finds

Posted: Published on February 19th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 19-Feb-2014 Contact: Jim Ritter jritter@lumc.edu 708-216-2445 Loyola University Health System MAYWOOD, IL A major study has found that giving stroke patients medications to lower their blood pressure during the first 48 hours after a stroke does not reduce the likelihood of death or major disability. The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. At least 25 percent of the population has high blood pressure, which greatly increases the risk of stroke. Lowering blood pressure has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke. The study investigated whether there also would be a benefit to lowering blood pressure immediately after a stroke. The study included more than 4,000 stroke patients in 26 hospitals across China, who were randomly assigned to receive blood pressure medications or to discontinue blood pressure medications. At 14 days or hospital discharge, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in mortality or disability. Blood pressure often is elevated following a stroke. "But in most cases, treatment is unnecessary because the blood pressure declines naturally over time, and lowering blood pressure may be contraindicated," said stroke specialist Jose Biller, MD, chair of the Department of Neurology of Loyola University … Continue reading
