HealthWatch: Dial a Diagnosis-Cell Phones to the Rescue: Medicine’s Next Big Thing?

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2014

LOS ANGELES, Cali. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Almost seven billion of us use one, and now researchers say that phone you talk, text, and tweet with could one day do much more for your health. Hannah Gooch is allergic to eggs. "We did a strict avoidance," Necia Joy Gooch, Hannah's mom, told Ivanhoe. Spike Loy has diabetes. "Since I was seven and a half, I had to take between two and 10 blood tests a day," Spike said. Both could one day benefit from a medical breakthrough that you carry around every day. "You can imagine your cell phone working like a very advanced microscope for looking at various different specimen," Aydogan Ozcan, PhD, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and BioEngineering, UCLA, told Ivanhoe. Researchers at UCLA created various attachments that fit on smart phones. One can perform an HIV screening. Another ONE detects allergens in food. A special tube measures allergens optically with the phone's camera. "You can do this for peanuts or you can do this for other kinds of allergens," Dr. Ozcan said. Other attachments measure the presence of E. coli in food, blood cell counts, and blood sugar levels. Cell phones are less expensive than a large … Continue reading

Surviving a brain haemorrhage – Nat's story

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2014

Cambridge News Follow us on Monday 17 Feb 2014 7:00 PM Written byEMMA HIGGINBOTHAM 2 Images Ill never forget seeing myself for the first time: the front of my head had been shaved, and I had this great big scar, which was still a little bit bloody, and my face was frozen. I looked so tiny, so thin and emaciated, with these enormous, terrified eyes. I was just staring at myself, thinking Thats not me. I literally didnt recognise myself. Nat Barden was 24 when a devastating brain haemorrhage nearly killed her. It should have been a perfect day: it was August 2003, and she and her fiance had travelled to the Creamfields music festival in Liverpool to see their favourite band. By the end of the night she was in intensive care, with the odds stacked firmly against her. I woke up with a headache that morning, and it intensified throughout the day, recalls Nat, curled up on the sofa with her black cat, Simba. I took some paracetamol with my lunch, then we went to the site. It was a funny atmosphere; normally at festivals its very friendly, but people were walking around looking really miserable, so we … Continue reading

Scientists Get Closer to Rejuvenating Aging Muscles

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2014

Posted: Monday, February 17, 2014, 7:00 AM SUNDAY, Feb. 16, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- As millions of aging Baby Boomers know, muscle tone and strength declines with advancing age, regardless of gym workouts. Now scientists say they might have uncovered a clue as to why that happens -- and new cell targets to help reverse it. In studies in aging mice, researchers at Stanford University found that, over time, the stem cells that help repair damaged muscle cells after injury are less able to do so. This helps explain why regaining strength and recovering from a muscle injury gets more difficult with age, the researchers said in work published online Feb. 16 in the journal Nature Medicine. "In the past, it's been thought that muscle stem cells themselves don't change with age, and that any loss of function is primarily due to external factors in the cells' environment," study senior author Helen Blau, director of Stanford's Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology, said in a university news release. "However, when we isolated stem cells from older mice, we found that they exhibit profound changes with age," said Blau, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the university. "Two-thirds of the … Continue reading

Epilepsy : Treatment & Care – WebMD

Medications for epilepsy are mainstays in controlling epileptic seizures. But surgical procedures are another dimension in treatment. Learn about your options. The type of treatment prescribed will depend on several factors, including the frequency and severity of the seizures and the person's age, overall health, and medical history. This is one of the oldest treatments for epilepsy, and helps lessen seizures. Biofeedback, melatonin, and large vitamin doses can help. Read on. Learn the risks and benefits of this epilepsy surgery. There is no cure for epilepsy, but medications may help keep symptoms under control. Treatments for epilepsy have come a long way in the last decade. Doctors have more than twice as many epilepsy medications to choose from than they did 10 years ago. There are a wide number of medications available for treating epilepsy in children, and advances in the past years have made a difference. Sometimes, brain seizures begin in a vital area of the brain -- for example, in areas that control movement, feeling, language, or memory. A temporal lobe resection is a surgeryperformed on the brain to control seizures. In this procedure, brain tissue in the temporal lobe is resected, or cut away, to remove the … Continue reading

Spring Hill painter uses art to promote epilepsy education

Posted: Published on February 16th, 2014

SPRING HILL Richard Davis remembers what life was like before Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. My first thought at a new job was, Are you going to fire me? said Davis. Some did. He was even deemed ineligible to attend college in those days, not for any academic reason, Davis said, but because the college told him they were not trained or equipped to treat a person in the midst of an epileptic seizure. Today, Davis, 51, uses art to inform the general public about epilepsy. His paintings were awarded first second and third place at this years Florida State Fair. Davis has had epilepsy since he was hit by a car at the age of 9. The bad seizures started when I was 13, and theyve been like an off and on thing, he said. Davis conveys the damage seizures cause to an individual and the mind through artistic representation, portrayed through Daviss book, The Unpredictable, and his paintings that serve as a catharsis to the pain, depression, anxiety, reduced vitality, and insufficient sleep he experiences during treatment. The association between epilepsy and depression is especially strong with more than one of every three epileptic … Continue reading
