Autism funding shortage frustrates Grimsby parents

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

Grimsby Lincoln News GRIMSBY A Grimsby couple is fuming after funding for their sons autism treatment was cut off after only one year. After waiting four years for intensive behavioral intervention (IBI) therapy, Chris Biggs and Diedre McKay were notified last month their six-year-old son Tison was no longer eligible for government funding. Tison, who is non-verbal and was diagnosed with autism at age three, failed to meet the milestones of the government-funded program and his parents are now appealing that decision. Basically, hes being kicked out of autistic school for being too autistic, said Biggs, co-host of the Biggs and Barr morning show on 97.7 HTZ FM. Hes a good kid. Hes willing to learn, hes a good student, but hes too autistic. IBI, the primary method of autism therapy in Ontario, is an intensive form of treatment that uses repetition and positive reinforcement. When started early research indicates results are best when administered before age four it can dramatically affect the trajectory of a childs life by teaching them to communicate and interact. Long wait times in the province mean the average child wont access publicly-funded treatment until after six years of age. Private therapy ranges from $60,000 … Continue reading

The foundation is a non-profit organization established to provide support and education for families affected by autism, as well as other developmental disorders. This is truly an exciting day for Mindy and I, Dave Rice said. For some time now weve talked about the opportunity that we have to form a foundation to truly make a difference for others. Rices 9-year-old son Dylan was diagnosed with autism a few years ago. The Rices became discouraged after it took several doctors three years to diagnose Dylans condition. It took a lot of time and a lot of doctors and assessments to finally get the diagnosis, Mindy said. Just getting to that point to have the diagnosis was extremely frustrating. When they first learned about Dylans diagnosis, the Rices were unsure of how to go about treatment for him. They were frustrated after receiving several conflicting answers from doctors in Utah while Dave was the assistant basketball coach … Continue reading

The Genetics of Drug Tolerance

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Put yourself in the shoes of a psychiatrist. You just diagnosed a person with schizophrenia, and you can prescribe any number of antipsychotic drugs, all of which can cause serious side effects. You know that older drugs, such as haloperidol, work well, but a third of all schizophrenia patients who take it suffer from Parkinsonian-like symptoms, such as tremors, involuntary spasms, and uncontrollable facial movements. You also know that those side effects are permanent in about half the people who experience them. In other words, you could be prescribed a drug that causes permanent brain damage. So you consider prescribing a newer drug, such as clozapine, which also helps a large portion of patients. But clozapine causes severe weight gain and diabetes in many people. You check your patients history. He smokes, as do 90 percent of people diagnosed with schizophrenia. He weighs a lot for his height. Taking clozapine will substantially increase his risk of heart disease, and the drug costs much more than haloperidol. Your patient cant afford it. Choosing the right drug is difficult, but you have to choose one. Letting the patient go without medication is not an … Continue reading
