Scientists discover pre-leukemic stem cell at root of cancer

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

; Dr. John Dick, a senior scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, is shown in a handout photo. TORONTO Canadian researchers have discovered a pre-leukemic stem cell that may be at the root of acute myeloid leukemia and also be the bad actor that evades chemotherapy and triggers a relapse in patients who have gone into remission. Acute myeloid leukemia, or AML, is a rapidly progressing cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects myeloid cells, which normally develop into mature red and white blood cells and platelets. Leukemia develops when blood stem cells in the bone marrow make abnormal blood cells, which over time crowd out normal blood cells, affecting their ability to function as they should. READ MORE:Could this new therapy kill cancer? Canadian doc thinks so In a paper published online Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers led by John Dick of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto report on the discovery of a pre-leukemic stem cell the forerunner to leukemia stem cells that give rise to the disease. A leukemia stem cell can lie dormant and theyre the ones that will sustain the growth of the leukemia, Dick said in an interview. The … Continue reading

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Gene Therapy Weekly -- According to news reporting originating from Washington, D.C., by NewsRx journalists, a patent application by the inventors Varney, Timothy (Baltimore, MD); Mills, Charles Randal (Finksburg, MD); Danilkovitch, Alla (Columbia, MD), filed on July 26, 2013, was made available online on February 6, 2014 (see also Pharmaceutical Companies). The assignee for this patent application is Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: "Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate readily into lineages including osteoblasts, myocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes (Pittenger, et al., Science, vol. 284, pg. 143 (1999); Haynesworth, et al., Bone, vol. 13, pg. 69 (1992); Prockop, Science, vol. 276, pg. 71 (1997)). In vitro studies have demonstrated the capability of MSCs to differentiate into muscle (Wakitani, et al., Muscle Nerve, vol. 18, pg. 1417 (1995)), neuronal-like precursors (Woodbury, et al., J. Neurosci. Res., Vol, 69. pg. 908 (2002); Sanchez-Ramos, et al., EXP. Neurol., vol. 171, pg. 109 (2001)), cardiomyocytes (Toma, et al., Circulation, vol. 105, pg. 93 (2002); Fakuda, Artif. The Stem Cell Geek

This is a kind of approach I don't really support and I am very disappointed by the fact that it's so common: why do these bloggers fill the Internet with duplications of news articles? No one has written a single word of comment. I guess that isn't really useful (or perhaps for the Google spiders yes...). What I would like to do now and in the future is review interesting papers in the simplest way possible, leaving back stuff that's too geeky and adding here and there my personal opinions. I hope you will approve and enjoy this kind of approach. First of all: here is the complete reference. I just can't stand when the journalists write: "a group of researchers for the XYZ hospital..." - everyone who is interested in going more in depth should be given the opportunity to look at the original paper! Stem cells from baby's umbilical cord save life of granddad given months to live

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

Patients with leukaemia need stem cells to replace damaged ones - the blood in the umbilical cord is so immature the recipient can accept the cells more easily A grandad given just months to live has beaten leukaemia after getting stem cells from two babies umbilical cords. The move was the only option to save David Pyne, 60, after all other treatments failed. He was one of the first to have the procedure. He said of the stem cell transplant: To think two newborns saved an old mans life is just marvellous and its given me more time with my own grandchildren. The dad-of-four was diagnosed with cancer in August 2012 and had chemotherapy and blood transfusions. He desperately needed a stem cell donor but a match could not be found and he was given just 12 to 18 months to live. But then he was offered cells from the umbilical cords of one baby in America and another in France. He said: Things were looking pretty grim until I got the news about the possibility of an umbilical cord stem cell transplant. The team found two separate umbilical cord donors that were a good match. "I felt elated. Go … Continue reading

Students getting swabbed in Carleton Place to save lives

Posted: Published on February 13th, 2014

Forget chocolates and flowers for Valentines Day. There's another way for guys to look good in the eyes of their loved ones: get swabbed. That's what dozens of gallant young students did in Carleton Place in the name of saving lives. "Getting swabbed" is a program run by Canadian Blood Services targeting young men in high school and university potentially to donate stem cells. It came to Carleton Place all because of a young female basketball player fighting for her life. The Carleton Place High School senior girls basketball team has played for years against Kingston player Mackenzie Curran. Last August, the 16-year-old was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a blood disorder. She required a stem cell transplant. 17-year-old twins, Keisha and Teagan Simpson, who play for the Carleton Place team, organized a Get Swabbed event to help raise awareness of the need for donors. "When we heard her situation, says Teagan Simpson, we just wanted to help and we knew this could affect any one of us. Canadian Blood Services is bringing its "Get Swabbed" program into high schools and universities across the country looking specifically for young males between the ages of 17 and 35. They offer the best … Continue reading
