Local mom bounces back after life-threatening illness

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2014

Published: Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 4:30 a.m. Last Modified: Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 10:56 p.m. An avid runner, tennis player and rollerblader, Massagee's journey began nearly 10 years ago, when she began to notice her body slowly change, and included an endless parade of doctors, chemptherapy and a risky stem cell transplant. Over time, Massagee's muscles grew larger. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing for an athletic woman in her early 50s, but as people age they tend to lose, not gain, muscle mass. Then her muscles began to harden and tighten, causing her significant pain. Her husband, Buddy, a Hendersonville attorney, declared one day that something just wasn't right. Massagee had become so muscular that some in her social circle silently wondered if she was taking steroids to bulk up. She looked more like a professional body builder than an active mother of five. As her muscles continued to harden and tighten, physical activity became more and more difficult. Massagee sought medical treatment from at least a dozen doctors, including the best of the best at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. After batteries of tests over several years, not a single doctor could tell Massagee what … Continue reading

STEMSO Advocates for the Global Medical Industry to Advance Availability of Adult Stem Cells

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2014

ANDERSON, South Carolina, February 7, 2014 (PRWEB) February 09, 2014 STEMSO, The International Stem Cell Society, is a member based, international, non-profit 501 (c) 6 trade association for the purpose of promoting the interests of the global, adult stem cell healthcare industry while linking patients and stakeholders with member medical organizations. STEMSO advocates for the availability of adult stem cells in the United States and abroad, believing that a combined effort can change the world. Because no one organization has enough money, time, or resources to address an issue of this magnitude independently, STEMSO recognizes that a combined effort and voice is more effective through a trade association. STEMSOs membership consists of organizations rather than individual members. Through these organizations, STEMSO works to create dialog and advocates for public awareness and wider usage and acceptance of adult stem cell treatments for a range of illnesses and injuries, both in the United States and internationally. The STEMSO 2014 Conference, titled Bridging the Gap: Research to Point of Care, February 19-22, 2014 at The Grand Lucayan in Freeport, Grand Bahamas, spotlights global, expert researchers, scientists, clinicians, and regulatory authorities who will discuss progress in taking these promising therapies for disease and injuries … Continue reading

Conflicting Stem Cell Research | Updates | PBS NewsHour | PBS

The answer appeared to be yes when the journal Nature published research results from Catherine Verfaillie of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis and her team in January 2002. The researchers had isolated a rare cell in bone marrow from a mouse, rat and human, and when they injected the mouse cells into mouse embryos, they discovered that the cells descendants spread throughout the body, appearing in blood as well as brain, muscle, lung and liver tissues, according to Nature. The ability for a stem cell to grow into any type of tissue, a adaptability originally only attributed to early embryos, would mean cells from the patients own body could be used as a perfect match for tissue and even organ repairs. So in addition to clearing the ethical hurdle, adult stem cells have the potential to avoid another obstacle posed by embryonic stem cell use the possibility that a patients body could reject the foreign cells. But the apparent breakthrough did not put to rest the question of whether adult stem cells could become other cells. Some subsequent studies began to call into question the 2002 findings. As research continued, for every study that said the stem … Continue reading

Fycompa (Perampanel) to be Resubmitted Early to German Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) for Additional Benefit Assessment

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2014

Early resubmission opportunity for epilepsy drug perampanel welcomed by Eisai The German Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), the decision-making body of the self-governing healthcare system in Germany, recently confirmed that Eisai will be able to resubmit early its anti-epileptic drug (AED) Fycompa (perampanel) for reassessment of its additional therapeutic benefits. Perampanel is indicated for the adjunctive treatment of partial onset seizures, with or without secondarily generalised seizures, in people with epilepsy aged 12 years and older.[1] The confirmation from the G-BA gives Eisai the right to resubmit perampanel for additional benefit reassessment within three months now. Once resubmitted, the new G-BA decision is expected to be published within 6 months. "It is right that the G-BA has permitted the early resubmission of Fycompa in Germany," said Gary Hendler, President & CEO, Eisai EMEA. "Patients are Eisai's first concern and we strongly believe they should be given access to treatment that provides a clear clinical benefit. Since the launch of Fycompa across Europe in September 2012, its clinical benefit has been recognised in approximately 4,000 people with epilepsy in Germany and we hope it will be available to many more in the near future." Eisai temporarily suspended perampanel from distribution in Germany … Continue reading

But the British Dental Association fears the move will hit care for patients with special needs, such as handicapped children, dementia sufferers or recovering drug addicts whose teeth can be rotted by the high sugar content of methadone. These patients often require sedation. Salaried dentists, who are paid directly by the NHS rather than being partners in their own dental practice, were parachuted into various areas around 2005 to deal with a crisis in local access which was forcing patients to go private or travel long distances for NHS dental care. BDA Scotland's Salaried Dentists' Committee has raised concerns about the future of care for such patients amid plans to axe or tender out a number salaried clinics. Seven new genetic regions linked to type 2 diabetes

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 9-Feb-2014 Contact: News & Information Office press.office@admin.ox.ac.uk 44-018-652-80530 University of Oxford Seven new genetic regions associated with type 2 diabetes have been identified in the largest study to date of the genetic basis of the disease. DNA data was brought together from more than 48,000 patients and 139,000 healthy controls from four different ethnic groups. The research was conducted by an international consortium of investigators from 20 countries on four continents, co-led by investigators from Oxford University's Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. The majority of such 'genome-wide association studies' have been done in populations with European backgrounds. This research is notable for including DNA data from populations of Asian and Hispanic origin as well. The researchers believe that, as more genetic data increasingly become available from populations of South Asian ancestry and, particularly, African descent, it will be possible to map genes implicated in type 2 diabetes ever more closely. 'One of the striking features of these data is how much of the genetic variation that influences diabetes is shared between major ethnic groups,' says Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Professor Mark McCarthy from the University of Oxford. 'This has allowed us to combine data from more … Continue reading
