Artificial retina may help restore vision

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2014

WASHINGTON: Doctors in US have successfully implanted an artificial retina in two near-blind patients to allow them to see objects, light and people standing before them. Thiran Jayasundera and David N Zacks, from the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center performed the surgeries for patients with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative and blinding eye disease. "We are pleased with both patients' progress at this point, and we are hopeful and optimistic that the artificial retina will enable them to see objects, light and people standing before them," Jayasundera said. "We believe the device will help them navigate a little better at home, be more independent, and have the pleasure of seeing things that the rest of us take for granted," said Jayasundara. The device Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration last year. The retinal prosthesis is not activated until the patient has sufficiently recovered from surgery. The patient then undergoes training to adapt to the new vision, a process that can take from one to three months. Original post: Artificial retina may help restore vision … Continue reading

Family seeks stem cell donors in Meaford for child with leukemia

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2014

Meaford Express By Junior Kindergarten, Katie Star Herron had already beat cancer once. By 4-years-old, she had been through 25 months of intense treatment for leukemia, including lumbar punctures, bone marrow aspirations, chemotherapy, steroids and more time at the hospital than at home. She received her last does of chemotherapy in September 2012 and was in remission. But the cancer is back, and now her family is reaching out everywhere they can to find a stem cell donor for Katie. A stem-cell transplant is her only hope. In some cases, about 30 per cent, there's a compatible donor in the family somewhere. Katie lives with her parents in Cambridge, but she has extended family in Meaford. Katie's grandparents Georgina (Sewell) and Glenn Hodgkinson grew up in Meaford and they are hoping there might be family left in town who can help their little granddaughter. One Match is a Canadian registry connected to an international network of stem-cell and bone marrow donor registries, and the family of Katie has arranged for a cheek-swabbing clinic in Cambridge on Saturday, February 22 at the Cambridge Sports Park at 1001 Franklin Boulevard from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The other option for people in … Continue reading

Dr. Newall Develops New Technique for Better Results with Thigh Liposuction

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2014

Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 Dr. German Newall of the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery has developed a new technique for thigh liposuction he says is sure to result in satisfied patients. Thigh liposuction is a very common request from women, as females tend to store a greater amount of fat in their thighs than males do. As women age, the body tends to hold more fat in select areas. These areas, such as the thighs, contain large amounts of insulin receptors on the fat cells. When a significant amount of fat is stored in the thighs, it is referred to as having a pear-shaped physique. Extra fat on the outer thighs can cause tight-fitting clothing to look as though they are cutting into a person. Too much fat on the inner thighs can result in the thighs rubbing together, causing discomfort, irritation and rashes. Liposuction is one way to remove excess fat from these problem areas. However, the results from tumescent liposuction of the legs have not always been desirable for patients. In the past, removing fat from the legs resulted in an uneven, dimpled surface. To solve this problem, Dr. Newall has developed a new technique for … Continue reading

Dartmouth scientists develop protocol to harvest mouse cell lines for melanoma research

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 31-Jan-2014 Contact: Robin Dutcher Robin.Dutcher@hitchcock.org 603-653-9003 The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Dartmouth researchers have developed a protocol that permits cells harvested from melanoma tumors in mice to grow readily in cell culture. Their findings were published in an article, Multiple murine BRafV600E melanoma cell lines with sensitivity to PLX4032, in the January 25, 2014 issue of Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research. "We anticipate that these cell lines will be extremely useful to many investigators who use mouse melanoma as a model system," said Constance E. Brinckerhoff, PhD, professor of Medicine and of Biochemistry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and a member of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC) Mechanism Research Program. There is a lack of mouse cell lines that harbor the BRAF mutation that is so prevalent in human melanomas, and the cell lines that are available grow slowly in culture and are not representative of human melanoma cell lines. Detailed experiments on molecular mechanisms controlling mouse cell line behavior have been difficult because the currently available mouse cell lines do not grow well in culture. The Geisel School of Medicine researchers are the first to have developed a protocol that … Continue reading

Preferable treatment for MS found in allogenic bone marrow …

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2014

Multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting more than one million people worldwide, is caused by an immune reaction to myelin proteins, the proteins that help form the myelin insulating substance around nerves. Demyelination and MS are a consequence of this immune reaction. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been considered as an important source for cell therapy for autoimmune diseases such as MS because of their immunosuppressive properties. Now, a research team in Brazil has compared MSCs isolated from MS patients and from healthy donors to determine if the MSCs from MS patients are normal or defective. The study will be published in a future issue of Cell Transplantation but is currently freely available on-line as an unedited early e-pub. "The ability of MSCs to modulate the immune response suggests a possible role of these cells in tolerance induction in patients with autoimmune diseases, and also supports the rationale for MSC application in the treatment of MS," said study corresponding author Dr. Gislane Lelis Vilela de Oliveira of the Center for Cell-Based Research at the University of Sao Paulo. "We found that MS patient-derived MSCs present higher senescence, or biological aging, and decreased expression of important immune … Continue reading

Screening for transformed human mesenchymal stromal cells …

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2014

Researchers at Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands, led by Dr. Qiuwei Pan and Dr. Luc van der Laan, have discovered that spontaneous tumorigenic transformation of human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) can occur during cell culture expansion, although the frequency is relatively low and often only observed after extensive passage in culture. This report appears in the January 2014 issue of Experimental Biology and Medicine. Currently, MSCs are being widely investigated as a potential treatment for various diseases. According to ClinicalTrials.gov, over 350 clinical trials using MSCs have been registered by the end of 2013 (with a search of: mesenchymal stem cells). For cell transplantation, MSCs are often isolated from either the patient or from a third party donor, and then expanded in cell culture before therapeutic application. In fact, spontaneous transformation of primary cells in cell culture has been well-investigated over decades. Malignant transformation of murine and monkey MSCs has also recently been reported. The current study confirmed that spontaneous tumorigenic transformation of human MSCs can occur during cell culture expansion. This potentially has large implications for the clinical application of ex vivo expanded MSCs. "Although this transformation is rare, we do need to carefully examine the presence … Continue reading

Life or death: Girl in need of stem cell match

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2014

Milton Canadian Champion Anne Hodgkinson and Paul Herron are living every parents worst nightmare. Again. When their daughter Katie Herron, now four years old, battled cancer as a toddler, the fight for the little girls health was a private, family affair. The youngster endured many months of cancer treatment and battled her way back to a healthy recovery. That all changed last November. The Cambridge family doesnt worry about privacy anymore. Theyre now telling everyone they know Katies acute lymphoblastic leukemia is back. Katies life depends on it. Although the type of cancer that has taken hold of her body usually has a high success rate of responding to treatment, the girl is among the small percentage of children who cant beat the leukemia using standard treatment protocols. Katies only life-saving option now is to find a stem cell donor match. Weve got to find a match and weve go to find it soon, explained an emotionally-raw Hodgkinson, as she paced the hallways of Hamiltons McMaster Childrens Hospital, where Katie has lived since the fall. We have to find a match. She is fighting for her life. Its hoped a stem cell match would help reboot Katies blood by essentially … Continue reading
