Helping hand for Darius’ new wheels

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

By JACINTA CARROLLJan. 30, 2014, 4 a.m. LITTLE Darius Owens hasnt had the easiest of starts in life. LITTLE Darius Owens hasnt had the easiest of starts in life. At six months of age he had his first seizure, then at 10 months of age he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Now three-and-a-half, Darius, or DJ as he is known, has also been diagnosed with epilepsy and global development delay. If that isnt enough to cope with, because he is unable to walk, he is now being put in a wheelchair, which doctors believe will help him continue his development. However, the family now face another hurdle their car isnt big enough to accommodate a wheelchair. For them to buy and modify a car would cost them $50,000, which is well beyond their reach. However, a community organisation has a second-hand vehicle already modified for a wheelchair which they can purchase for $14,000. Darius mum, Melinda Owens, said while this vehicle would be perfect, they just dont have the $14,000 to buy it; due to Darius high needs she is unable to work, plus they have many other medical expenses associated with his treatment. So they are asking for community … Continue reading

UM researchers get $300K traumatic brain injury grant from NFL, GE

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

MISSOULA Tissue samples provided by a Boston brain bank helped two University of Montana researchers identify biomarkers stemming from traumatic brain injuries that closely matched their work with animals. The discovery gained the attention of the National Football League and General Electric, and it won UM research professors Sarj Patel and Tom Rau a $300,000 grant to help speed the diagnoses and treatment of TBI in athletes and members of the military. The Head Health Challenge announced the grant last week and promised more funding for research that continues to show promise. Its surprising but exciting, said Patel. Its a little different from the kinds of grants were used to applying for. GE and the NFL want to advance both treatment and diagnosis, and understand how TBI affects the brain. Theyre looking for new and exciting science. Brain samples provided by Boston University enabled Patel and Rau to identify biomarkers that were similar to those theyd witnessed in their research on animals. Early efforts have shown that a traumatic brain injury changes how the brain operates. More importantly, Patel said, it also changes the level of certain proteins and ribonucleic acids, or RNAs, present in the brain after injury. Were … Continue reading

Cambridge study to give every Schumacher personalised treatment

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

Cambridge University in the UK is leading a 25 million EU research project into traumatic brain injuries in one of the largest collaborations the world of medicine has ever seen. More than 60 hospitals and 38 scientific institutes are participating in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) project. In total, data will be collected for 20,00030,000 patients, including extremely detailed data for over 5,000 patients. Traumatic brain injury affects 10 million people a year worldwide and is the leading cause of death and disability in children and young adults. Professor David Menon, co-chair of the Acute Brain Injury Programme at the University of Cambridge, who co-leads the new project said: Despite advances in care, the sad truth is that we are no closer to knowing how to navigate past this variability to the point where we can link the particular characteristics of a TBI to the best treatment and outcome. It is the global nature of the damage involving many parts of the brain that defines these types of traumatic brain injuries, which might result from transport accidents, assaults, falls or sporting injuries. Unfortunately, both the pattern of damage and the eventual outcome are extremely variable from … Continue reading

Multiple Sclerosis Natural Treatment Review Exposes Safe Natural MS Healing Method

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

Denver, CO (PRWEB) January 29, 2014 According to the review on http://www.SclerosisTreatment.com, the Multiple Sclerosis Natural Treatment is a complex program that was created by Dr. Gary M. Levin, a health consultant and American surgeon. Levin claims that after years of study and research, he was able to achieve the impressive method that can help all sufferers feel better and overcome MS easier. To read the full report, go to: http://www.sclerosistreatment.com/2013/02/multiple-sclerosis-natural-treatment.html. Actually, Levin says that his method is so successful only because it addresses the real cause of the disease. The MS Natural Treatment review indicates that MS is in fact caused by an overactive immune system. From this point of view, Levin says that the only effective way to stop this disease is by repairing the immune system, which has been damaged. For that, the author of this program provides a series of natural techniques in his guide. The Multiple Sclerosis Natural Treatment program is available in a simple to download eBook that anyone may access. The eBook introduces sufferers to a series of natural remedies which may prove a great efficiency in the cure of multiple sclerosis. The review indicates that Levin talks about the existence of some … Continue reading

Study confirms ‘he hormone’ link to heart attacks

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

testosterone 11 hours ago Heavily promoted male hormone products may be sending men flocking to stores, but their next stop may be the emergency room, according to a new study published Wednesday. The research confirms earlier studies that show men with heart disease double their risk of heart attack soon after they start using testosterone gels or other supplements. And testosterone doubled the risk in men over 65 with or without heart disease. "Patients and their physicians should discuss the risk of heart attacks when considering testosterone therapy, said Sander Greenland, a professor of epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, who led the study. Its a similar pattern to women using hormone replacement therapy after menopause doctors used to think it lowered the risk of heart attacks and cancer, but it in fact has the opposite effect. The study, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE, confirms the results of several smaller studies. One published in November found that the use of "low T" therapy boosted the risk of serious problems including heart attack, stroke and death in men who already had heart trouble and who had low testosterone. And another one released in … Continue reading

Researchers make stem cell discovery by studying tissue stress and repair

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2014

GWEN IFILL: Today's news of a breakthrough in stem cell research captured the attention of scientists around the world. For years, researchers have been investigating how to get adult stem cells to behave more like embryonic ones, which would allow them to be developed into almost any organ or tissue. The findings announced today involve a simple treatment, immersing adult mouse cells in a mild acid bath. As seen here, mouse embryos were grown with beating heart cells derived from this process. Dr. Charles Vacanti was one of the lead researchers from the team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. And he joins me now. Dr. Vacanti, this is kind of amazing. Are you explaining -- are you telling us you're making stem cells, instead of finding them? DR. CHARLES VACANTI, Brigham & Women's Hospital: That is correct. And we believe we're doing exactly what's being done in the body when you normally have an injury. GWEN IFILL: So how did you come about this? CHARLES VACANTI: It's been a long process. I started working with this with my brother Martin about 15 years ago, first looking for a better cell to use in tissue engineering. And in 2001, we described … Continue reading
