£4.5million awarded to 10-year-old girl who suffered ‘catastrophic’ brain injury at birth

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

Samantha Singleton-Parkes suffered the injuries soon after birth because of mistakes in her care A 10-year-old girl is to receive a 4.5million compensation payout after she suffered a catastrophic brain injury shortly after she was born The damages, made up of a lump sum and annual payments, will provide a more secure financial future for Samantha Singleton-Parkes, who has cerebral palsy, and comfort and reassurance for her mother Gail, London's High Court heard today. The settlement against Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust in Essex was approved by Judge Birtles, who was told by David Pittaway QC that Samantha's family had played a fantastic part in bringing her up. Solicitor Julian Wilson, of law firm Thompson Smith and Puxon, said later: "In the vast majority of cases medical treatment in this country is carried out very competently. "However, in Samantha's case, mistakes were made following her birth which led to a catastrophic brain injury. "Samantha's mother's main concern in this litigation has always been to secure Samantha's future, and this settlement achieves that." The hospital trust denied liability for negligence but agreed to pay 70 per cent of the damages that Mrs Singleton-Parkes was claiming in the High Court. Mrs … Continue reading

Early rehabilitation important for recovery after severe traumatic brain injury

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 28-Jan-2014 Contact: Krister Svahn krister.svahn@sahlgrenska.gu.se 031-786-3869 University of Gothenburg Early rehabilitation interventions seem to be essential for how well a patient recovers after a severe brain injury. It might even increase the chances for long-term survival, according to researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy. In a series of studies, Trandur Ulfarsson, doctoral student at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, has explored the long-term effects of traumatic brain injuries caused for example by accidents or violence. The studies, where 280 Swedish and Icelandic participants were followed up 1-11 years after the injury, show a clear association between how quickly patients get access to rehabilitation and how well they recover. Functional activity improved 'We found that the functional activity for example how independent the patients are in their daily activities and how fast they can return to work is substantially improved among those who are admitted to inpatient rehabilitation care early,' says Ulfarsson, who presents the results in his doctoral thesis. The studies also show that severe brain injury often leads to an impaired pituitary function, most often lack of growth hormone, which in turn may cause obesity. Being unemployed or on sick leave prior to the injury also … Continue reading

The talk – getting the conversation started about advance directives

I had the privilege to work as a palliative care nurse practitioner in a large hospital with nine different intensive care units. One morning an order for palliative care was received from a trauma surgeon for a 67-year-old female patient with a traumatic brain injury and very poor prognosis. As a palliative care nurse practitioner it was my job to go to the ICU, review the patients chart, speak with the trauma surgeon, nursing and case manager, examine the patient for any symptom management needs, and contact the family to set up a meeting. In the family meeting we would discuss the patients condition, treatment options, advance directives, and patients prognosis. This particular case included the patient, her husband, four children, and eight grandchildren. The patient was a retired nurse, working as a volunteer for the Red Cross on a mobile unit for a blood drive in the community. She was exiting a bus mobile unit, and somehow lost her balance. She fell down the stairs of the bus and out the door head first onto the concrete curb, sustaining a major head injury. She was rushed to our hospital, where a MRI indicated a massive brain bleed, she was … Continue reading

She said she could not bear to send her son away to Brisbane, but the family could not afford the long-term cost of keeping him in the Rockhampton Hospital. In an ideal world, Daphnejean would bring her son home and care for him, but she does not have the equipment or training to go down that path just yet. Jamie still needs feeding tubes in hospital. But Daphnejean won't let doctors tell her that Jamie has no brain activity. Original post: Doctors say … Continue reading

By Dow Jones Business News, January 29, 2014, 07:08:00 AM EDT By Ben Fox Rubin Biogen Idec Inc. ( BIIB ) on Wednesday said its fourth-quarter profit grew 57%, as sales of its multiple-sclerosis treatment Tecfidera continued to boost the biotechnology company's revenue. For the new year, the company projected adjusted earnings of $11.00 to $11.20 a share and revenue growth of 22% to 25% . Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected $11.63 a share in profit and revenue growth of 21%. Biogen recently launched Tecfidera, a pill for multiple sclerosis that analysts expect to steal significant market share from the injectable drugs that now dominate the market. The drug has had brisk early adoption from patients seeking easier-to-take drugs, despite having been approved after two rival oral drugs made by Biogen competitors. Biogen is aiming to become the dominant maker of MS treatments, a group of drugs that command high prices and that patients typically take for years. The company reported a profit of $457.3 million, or $1.92 a share, up from $292.1 million, or $1.23 a share, a year earlier. Foodborne toxin could trigger MS, studies suggest

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2014

Health JoNel Aleccia NBC News 18 hours ago CDC / CDC Toxins produced by Clostridium perfringens, a common cause of foodborne illness, could be a potential trigger for multiple sclerosis, scientists say. Add another clue to the mystery of multiple sclerosis: Scientists say a poison produced by common foodborne germs could be a trigger for the debilitating autoimmune disorder that affects 400,000 Americans. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York have discovered that a toxin made by the bacterium Clostridium perfringens responsible for a million cases of food poisoning in the U.S. each year appears to attack the cells associated with MS. What weve shown is the toxins target the cells that are targeted in MS, said Jennifer Linden, a Weill Cornell researcher whos presenting findings Tuesday at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. Her research also showed that about 13 percent of a small sample of food products harbored C. perfringens bacteria, and nearly 3 percent were positive for the toxin linked to MS. Its too early to suggest that MS is caused by food poisoning, but it does raise the possibility that the C. perfringens bacteria could be involved in activating the disease, said … Continue reading
