NFL and GE award grant to UM researchers to continue studies on traumatic brain injuries

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

Tissue samples provided by a Boston brain bank helped two University of Montana researchers identify biomarkers stemming from traumatic brain injuries that closely matched their work with animals. The discovery gained the attention of the National Football League and General Electric, and it won UM research professors Sarj Patel and Tom Rau a $300,000 grant to help speed the diagnoses and treatment of TBI in athletes and members of the military. The Head Health Challenge announced the grant last week and promised more funding for research that continues to show promise. Its surprising but exciting, said Patel. Its a little different from the kinds of grants were used to applying for. GE and the NFL want to advance both treatment and diagnosis, and understand how TBI affects the brain. Theyre looking for new and exciting science. Brain samples provided by Boston University enabled Patel and Rau to identify biomarkers that were similar to those theyd witnessed in their research on animals. Early efforts have shown that a traumatic brain injury changes how the brain operates. More importantly, Patel said, it also changes the level of certain proteins and ribonucleic acids, or RNAs, present in the brain after injury. Were interested … Continue reading

City firm switches pills for injections for MS sufferers 6:30am Monday 27th January 2014 in News By Pete Hughes, Reporter. Call me on 01865 425431 AN OXFORD drug company has developed the first pill to treat Multiple Sclerosis that can be prescribed to the majority of sufferers. Until now people with the most common form of MS, relapsing and remitting (RRMS), have only been able to medicate with injections. But on Wednesday Oxford firm Genzyme, based at the Oxford Business Park in Cowley, had its new pill Aubagio approved by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). Jenna Mahoney, a spokesman for the MS Society, said: This is excellent news for people with MS. There are a number of treatments for this sort of MS but they are all injectable, and this offers people an alternative for the first time. She said that in a recent MS Society survey, a huge proportion of sufferers said they would prefer to take a tablet to an injection. Aubagio, the trade name for chemical teriflunomide, slows down the degenerative effects of the disease. In Multiple Sclerosis, the immune system starts attacking the coating around the bodys nerve cells, which stops them from working. … Continue reading

California to fund research in stem-cell genomics – – San …

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

SACRAMENTO The state of California is preparing to invest up to $40 million in a new scientific field that backers say could revolutionize medicine and lead to personalized medical treatments. The directors of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine are meeting in Berkeley this Wednesday to create one or two research centers for stem-cell genomics, the Sacramento Bee reported Sunday. Scientists and biotech companies in the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego and elsewhere are competing for the research money. Researchers believe that genomics, the study of genes and their relationships, can lead to more effective therapies that are tailored to a patients genetic makeup. The new research centers for stem-cell genomics could help make California a leader in the fast-moving field. Right now, in a lot of ways, doctors are making educated guesses as to how to treat us patients more generally, said UC Davis stem cell researcher Paul Knoepfler. By knowing our genomic information ... they could be making far more educated choices about treatments. The move into genomics comes as the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine struggles to fulfill the promises of the 2004 ballot initiative campaign that created the $3 billion stem-cell agency. So far, no … Continue reading

Island’s first stem cell manufacturing centre approved at NUI Galway

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

Embryonic stem cells have been highly valued for their ability to turn into any type of cell in the body. Stem cells can be manufactured for human use for the first time in Ireland, following Irish Medicines Board licensing of a new facility in Galway. NUI Galways Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland aims to culture adult stem cells to tackle conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and associated conditions. The centre, which is one of less than half a dozen in Europe authorised for stem cell manufacture, has been developed by researchers at NUIGs regenerative medicine institute. Stem cells serve as the bodys repair mechanism. They can be isolated from tissues such as bone marrow and fat, and cultured in laboratory settings. More controversially, embryonic stem cells have been highly valued for their ability to turn into any type of cell in the body, but scientists can now use reprogrammed adult skin cells to create a stem cell that is very similar to embryonic versions. The centre will be opened today by Minister of State for Research and Innovation Sen Sherlock, at a time when the Health Research Board and Science Foundation Ireland have approved funding there for clinical … Continue reading

New method increases supply of embryonic stem cells

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Jan-2014 Contact: Press Office pressinfo@ki.se 46-852-486-077 Karolinska Institutet A new method allows for large-scale generation of human embryonic stem cells of high clinical quality. It also allows for production of such cells without destroying any human embryos. The discovery is a big step forward for stem cell research and for the high hopes for replacing damaged cells and thereby curing serious illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease. Currently human embryonic stem cells are made from surplus in vitro fertilized (IVF) embryos that are not used for the generation of pregnancies. The embryos do not survive the procedure. Therefore it has been illegal in the USA to to use this method for deriving embryonic stem cell lines. Sweden's legislation has been more permissive. It has been possible to generate embryonic stem cells from excess, early IVF embryos with the permission of the persons donating their eggs and sperm. An international research team led by Karl Tryggvason, Professor of Medical Chemistry at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore has, together with Professor Outi Hovatta at Karolinska Institutet, developed a method that makes it possible to use a single cell from an … Continue reading

Stem cell facility opens in Co Galway

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

Monday 27 January 2014 14.13 The first facility in Ireland licensed to manufacture human stem cells opened in NUI Galway this morning. The development will mean some patients suffering from certain diseases will be able to access clinical trials of stem cell therapies. Stem cells are human cells that can develop into many types of tissue. As a result, scientists are increasingly studying their potential for regenerating diseased or damaged tissue in people suffering the effects of certain illnesses, such as heart attacks, stroke, arthritis or diabetes. Before they can be used widely in humans such therapies must undergo extensive clinical trials. The first Irish licence to manufacture stem cells for this purpose was granted to the Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland at NUIG. The custom-built facility will take small samples of bone marrow from adult donors and culture them in a specially designed laboratory to make billions of stem cells. The cells will then be injected back into the donor or other patients as part of clinical trials. The first of those trials will investigate their use in the treatment of diabetes patients who are suffering reduced blood flow to lower limbs, a symptom which often results in amputations. … Continue reading

Punctured cell membranes lead to high blood pressure

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Jan-2014 Contact: Birgitte Svennevig birs@sdu.dk University of Southern Denmark Researchers from the University of Southern Denmark have identified how a mutated protein can lead to holes in a protein sitting in a cell's membrane. Such holes cause high blood pressure, and the discovery can now lead to new and better medication for high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be caused by many things - one of them being a specific mutated protein. Now the researchers at University of Southern Denmark have found out exactly what unfortunate events in the human organism are initiated by the mutated protein. "This knowledge can now lead to new and better medicines for high blood pressure", says the lead author of a new scientific publication, PhD student Wojciech Kopec from the Center for Biomembrane Physics (MEMPHYS) at the University of Southern Denmark. He explains that some years ago research colleagues from University of Aarhus found out that a particular mutated protein is associated with high blood pressure. But the exact mechanism at play could not be clarified until now. Wojciech Kopec and his colleagues, Himanshu Khandelia and Bastien Loubet from Memphys and Hanne Poulsen from University of Aarhus, have now revealed … Continue reading
