Posted: Published on January 26th, 2014

One toot (of the horn) makes me go 15 steps farther, said Daryl Sammy Sampaga, the 41-year-old Hilo native whos making an around-the-island trek to raise awareness of muscular dystrophy and funds to support keiki with disabilities. One horn pushes me more. Sampaga, who has muscular dystrophy, which affects his leg muscles, reached the Kailua-Kona Fire Station about 5:45 p.m. Thursday after walking approximately 129 miles through South Hilo, Puna, Kau, South Kona and North Kona since leaving Hilo on Jan. 14. Sampaga, who didnt do much walking beyond to the car or store before starting this effort, averages 10 to 14 miles per day. The most he walked in one day was 16 miles. Im so proud of him, said his 14-year-old daughter, Keahi Sampaga, who also has muscular dystrophy and walked 10 miles alongside her father Jan. 14. Im surprised he could walk this far. Muscular dystrophy is a group of more than 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles that control movement, according to the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Stem-cell therapy restores faith for arthritic pets

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2014

ELLSWORTH Visitors to the Bellaire pet crisis center With a Little help From My Friends get an official welcome from Moka. The Labrador retriever was found behind a Bellaire restaurant in 2011 and now serves as the centers mascot. Peforming her duties has been increasingly difficult for the dog, who suffers from severe arthritis in her hips. So recently the center turned to Ellsworth veterinarian Christian Randall of North Country Veterinary Services, the first in northern Michigan to offer in-clinic adipose stem cell therapy. The procedure uses a pets own blood and tissue to produce plasma-rich platelets and stem cells that proliferate growth in damaged areas. Dormant stem cells are separated from adipose -- fat tissue -- and activated with an LED technology that uses three different wave lengths of light. Then the cells are injected directly into the affected area or administered intravenously to help promote regeneration. The result is a decrease in pain and lameness and increased range of motion. Its using the bodys own repair cells to repair damage, said Trey Smith, director of laboratory services for MediVet America, which developed the technology Randall uses. The therapy is the first treatment to help heal and slow the … Continue reading

Stimulating spinal cord protects against Parkinson’s symptoms

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2014

Current ratings for: Stimulating spinal cord protects against Parkinson's symptoms Public / Patient: 5 (2 votes) Health Professionals: 0 (0 votes) Long-term treatment that involves electrically stimulating the spinal cord has improved symptoms of Parkinson's disease in rats. Publishing the results of their study in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers from Duke Medicine are hopeful their findings could help human Parkinson's patients. The team, led by Dr. Miguel Nicolelis, professor of neurobiology at Duke University, built on their own previous research, which showed that stimulating rats' spinal cords with electrical signals temporarily eased symptoms of the disease. Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological condition, which is caused by the loss of neurons that produce dopamine in the brain. It affects movement, control of muscles and balance, and it can also cause stiffness, eye problems and sleep problems, among many other symptoms. "Finding novel treatments that address both the symptoms and progressive nature of Parkinson's disease is a major priority," says Dr. Nicolelis. The current treatment for Parkinson's is a drug called L-dopa, and it works by replacing dopamine. However, the researchers say it can cause side effects and, over time, lose its effectiveness. Cutting Edge Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury Will Soon Be Done In North Carolina | WUNC

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2014

Ground was broken this week on a new center at Fort Bragg that will focus on the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. According to the latest estimates from the Defense Department, there have been hundreds of thousands of these cases diagnosed - and perhaps as many that have not yet been diagnosed. Nine of these new centers are planned for different communities in the United States. They are known as the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) Satellite Centers. Staff Sgt. Spencer Milo was diagnosed with post traumatic stress in 2011 after a suicide bomber -- the bomber was a child -- attacked his patrol in Afghanistan. Milo had a traumatic brain injury, and received treatment at one of the NICoE centers: I can personally attest to the life changing experience NICoE offers and to the immense need for a satellite center in the Ft. Bragg community. It was tough to leave my friends on base, but getting treatment was one of the best decisions I ever made. This new Intrepid Spirit Center will offer others like me an opportunity to find peace again while keeping their support systems close by. Organizers say that Fort Bragg was chosen because it … Continue reading

NFL: Players using medical marijuana not out of the question for NFL commissioner Goodell

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2014

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday that the league would be open to allowing players to use medical marijuana if experts could show that it helped treat concussions. Im not a medical expert, Goodell said at a news conference announcing 16 winners of $300,000 grants to advance scientific research into the study and treatment of traumatic brain injury. We will obviously follow signs. We will follow medicine, and if they determine this could be a proper usage in any context, we will consider that. Our medical experts are not saying that right now. The drug is currently banned by the league as part of its collective bargaining agreement with the players. Marijuana was recently legalized in Colorado and Washington. The two teams that will play in the Feb. 2 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium the Broncos and Seahawks are from those states. I dont know whats going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, Goodell said. But we will continue to support the evolution of medicine. A report on HBOs Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel on Tuesday estimated that as many as 60 … Continue reading
